How A Teen Entrepreneur Created A Personal Safety App For Women
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin In 2020, Harish Kolli, a high school junior from Austin, Texas, was scrolling through TikTok when he came across a viral trend. The viral TikTok trend encouraged women to save videos with fake conversations to use when feeling unsafe (for example: when feeling uncomfortable in an Uber). These videos would have a person talking to you as if they knew you and were expecting to see you soon in order to dissuade potential harassers. Kolli later realized that what made the videos so popular and beneficial was their preventative and discreet nature. More than 80% of harassment crimes are committed by someone the recipient knows, so people often don’t feel comfortable calling the police or using deterrents such as pepper spray. Understanding just how important these underlying concepts are, Harish decided to create an improved, user-friendly solution that deters harassers before they escalate their behavior. Not long after, he met … [Read more...] about How A Teen Entrepreneur Created A Personal Safety App For Women

Spotlight on dating apps for role in adding to HIV-AIDS burden in India
The top AIDS research institute in India is set to undertake a first-ever study to assess the role of dating apps such as Tinder and OkCupid, among others, in contributing to the HIV and AIDS burden in the country. In the West, such studies have established that dating apps may be leading to a rise in HIV cases among adolescents, but no empirical evidence is available from India yet on whether there is a change in risk behaviour following the use of such dating apps. Scientists at the National AIDS Research Institute (NARI) under the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said that their discussion with various stakeholders suggested that a large number of men having sex with men and female sex workers may have shifted to dating apps. “Therefore, we thought this would be an important study to understand the correlation between dating apps and AIDS in India in the changing social scenario that is heavily dependent on technology, mobile phones and internet,” said a senior … [Read more...] about Spotlight on dating apps for role in adding to HIV-AIDS burden in India
LINE app popular in Thailand warns users, look out for scams
LINE, a chat app popular in Thailand, is warning users to be on the lookout for scammers who might use SMS and LINE chat to steal personal information. The app said today that recently, some scammers claimed to be company officials, and posted job announcements via SMS and Line chat. LINE said that scammers are also adding people as ‘friends’ in order to steal their personal information, and hurting people and companies involved. The app tells users they can report scammers by clicking ‘Other settings’ and ‘Report’. “…we would like to ask Line users not to click on links with unknown origin or provide personal information through online channels without checking thoroughly.” This news comes after Thai police warned the public last month not to fall for so-called ‘deepfake’ scams . US pries into over 100 trader and banker phones in texting probe
Reuters filepix for illustration purpose only - A + A NEW YORK (May 18): The US is forcing Wall Street banks to embark on a systematic search through more than 100 personal mobile phones carried by top traders and dealmakers in the largest-ever probe into clandestine messaging on platforms such as WhatsApp. The Securities and Exchange Commission has been sending firms lists of key positions — in some cases pointing to around 30 people including heads of certain investment banking teams or trading desks — that are subject to the review, according to people with direct knowledge of the requests. Personnel in those roles are being ordered to hand over phones so devices can be examined by lawyers. The aim is to gauge how pervasively Wall Street professionals use unauthorized messaging platforms to chat with each other or clients as regulators decide which firms to punish, and how hard, for failing to preserve business-related messages sent via unapproved platforms. … [Read more...] about US pries into over 100 trader and banker phones in texting probe
Google Play Bans Twitter Alternative Gab.ai App Over ‘Hate Speech’
Gab.ai, the social media platform that was built as an alternative to Twitter, was banned on Google’s Play Store Thursday. The move will make it impossible for users on Android phones and other Android-powered devices to use the app. According to Google Play Support, the app has been suspended and removed from Google Play as a “policy strike because it violates the hate speech policy” with links to the policy in question. In December, the app — which bills itself as more welcome to free speech than Twitter — was previously rejected by Apple’s App Store. Gab was told by Apple representatives that the application “includes pornographic content” posted by users — despite how Twitter also features similar user-generated content. The move to remove Gab from the Play Store follows in the wake of the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia that left one woman dead. Gab allows users across political spectrum to post politically incorrect speech. Much like Twitter itself, the platform … [Read more...] about Google Play Bans Twitter Alternative Gab.ai App Over ‘Hate Speech’

The thieves created a key for the shop shutter of Sapum Mobile on Thepkasattri Road in order to break in. However, we do have CCTV images of the thieves, so we are doing our best to track them down,” said Maj Sakol. “We have collected evidence from the shop, as well as finger prints.” Shop owner Udon Saensip suspects that the thieves had scouted out the place ahead of time and knew that nobody was there at night, added Maj Sakol. — Kritsada Mueanhawong Get more from The Thaiger FREE APP: ANDROID or iOS | HAVE YOUR SAY FORUM | … [Read more...] about Mobile phone thieves knock over Phuket shop
