Britain could lead the world into a new era of democracy and free trade, turning the revolt against the establishment into a more cooperative, accountable and prosperous global order, according to Mark Carney. The current system of global trade has key flaws including wealth and income inequality, a lack of democracy and trust, and serious financial imbalances, the Governor of the Bank of England warned on Tuesday. However, he said Brexit has the potential to upend those and create a new way of running the world. “In many respects, Brexit is the first test of a new global order and could prove the acid test of whether a way can be found to broaden the benefits of openness while enhancing democratic... Afghan schoolgirl scarred in acid attack now a teacher
KANDAHAR, Afghanistan: When attackers threw acid in Shamsia Husseini’s face outside her school in Afghanistan, she defied them by returning to class—and now she has struck another blow for female education by becoming a teacher herself. Shamsia suffered severe burns on her eyelids and cheeks in the November 2008 assault, which generated global publicity, with then US First Lady Laura Bush condemning it as a “cowardly and shameful” crime. Afghan President Hamid Karzai vowed to hang the men who had attacked Shamsia as she walked to the all-girls’ Mirwais Mena school on the outskirts of Kandahar city. One man, wearing a mask, asked Shamsia if she was going to school. Then he tore off her veil and pumped acid from a spray gun onto her face. Several other pupils were hurt in a series of similar acid attacks that morning, but Shamsia and her friends refused to abandon their lessons and persuaded their reluctant parents to support the school staying open.Five … [Read more...] about Afghan schoolgirl scarred in acid attack now a teacher
Cheaper Battery Is Unveiled as a Step to a Carbon-Free Grid
Sections SEARCH Skip to content Skip to site index Energy & Environment Subscribe Log In Subscribe Log In Today’s Paper Advertisement Supported by ByIvan Penn Sept. 26, 2018 Lithium-ion batteries have become essential for powering electric cars and storing energy generated by solar panels and wind turbines. But their drawbacks are also by now familiar: They use scarce minerals, are vulnerable to fires and explosions, and are pricey. A plentiful, safe and more affordable alternative would be worth a lot. On Wednesday, an energy company headed by the California billionaire Patrick Soon-Shiong is unveiling a rechargeable battery operating on zinc and air that can store power at what it says is far less than the cost of lithium-ion batteries. Tests of the zinc energy-storage systems have helped power villages in Africa and Asia as well as cellphone towers in the United States for the last six years, without any backup from … [Read more...] about Cheaper Battery Is Unveiled as a Step to a Carbon-Free Grid

GRAIL to Present New Data from Circulating Cell-free Genome Atlas (CCGA) Study at 2018 American Society of Clinical Oncology Annual Meeting
MENLO PARK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 16, 2018--GRAIL, Inc., a healthcare company focused on the early detection of cancer, today announced that new data from the Circulating Cell-free Genome Atlas (CCGA) Study will be presented during the 2018 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting taking place June 1-5 in Chicago. Data will be highlighted in four abstracts, including two oral presentations.Previously presented data from the first pre-planned sub-study of CCGA supported the possibility of developing a highly specific blood test for early detection of cancer with a very low rate of false positive results. 1New data from the same sub-study suggest a blood test can be developed to detect multiple types of cancer at early stages (Abstract 12021). Sensitivity analyses were conducted by sequencing blood samples from 878 participants with newly diagnosed cancer with three prototype genome sequencing assays. In general, results were comparable for the three prototype … [Read more...] about GRAIL to Present New Data from Circulating Cell-free Genome Atlas (CCGA) Study at 2018 American Society of Clinical Oncology Annual Meeting
