Send your story to: [email protected] with the subject "My Pet Story". A tiny pure white fluff ball. That was my first impression of Miss Honey Bear. Way back in 2010, I was visiting the island of Langkawi. At midnight one night, a friend knocked on my door. She had been driving home in the dark and had nearly run over a cat family crossing a highway, but happily stopped in time. The mumcat and other kittens fled into the jungle. But one tiny kitten stood frozen and terrified in the headlights. My friend found a shoebox in her car, picked up the kitten and brought it to me. So tiny – the kitten fit in the palm of my hand. I was writing an article about the plight of polar … [Read more...] about My Pet Story: The cat who founded a sanctuary

Insurance Company Launches Coverage For Marijuana DUIs
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Cannabis consumers can protect themselves from unreliable police methods to determine impairment with new insurance coverage that provides financial and legal protection for those charged with driving under the influence of marijuana. The new insurance product from Salt Lake City-based Reepher launched this week in Missouri, with a nationwide rollout ultimately expected. Justin Kahn, CEO and co-founder of Reepher, noted in a statement from the company that drug tests for marijuana do not indicate if a person is high. Instead, the tests detect the presence of cannabis metabolites, which can remain in the system for weeks after ingestion, particularly for frequent users. “Unlike alcohol, there is currently no chemical test for cannabis impairment. THC and cannabis metabolites stay in your system and can trigger positive drug test results in sober drivers,” Kahn said. “This means that a regular cannabis consumer is likely to … [Read more...] about Insurance Company Launches Coverage For Marijuana DUIs
Keeping it Real with Real Vision’s Raoul Pal
A super slide for stocks, bonds, and cryptocurrencies rolled all the way into last week, right up until Friday, when the Nasdaq posted its strongest one-day gain since November of 2020. Despite Friday's gains, the major averages posted losses for the week, with the Dow closing down more than 2% and posting its first seven-week losing streak since 2001. The S&P 500 fell 2.5% and hit its longest weekly losing streak since 2011, while the Nasdaq fell 2.8%. It's been a rough, rough year across capital markets. A full $35 trillion in global market value has been erased since the beginning of the year. That's 14% of all global wealth, including a trillion dollars of losses in cryptocurrencies. To put those losses in perspective, 2008 saw a 19% decline in global market value, and that doesn't include non-financial assets such as housing. Still, perspective is everything, especially for investors who have been invested in the U.S. stock market for at least five years. Believe it or not, … [Read more...] about Keeping it Real with Real Vision’s Raoul Pal
Know Your Stuff: How to make small spaces look bigger
This article first appeared in City & Country, The Edge Malaysia Weekly, on May 9, 2022 - May 15, 2022. A small home can appear spacious when free flow is established between the main zones of the living premises (Photo by PINS Studio) - A + A Small space living is cosy and efficient, but it can be tricky figuring out how to decorate and fit everything you need, or want, in the space without making it look crowded and messy. Naturally, people always want to make their homes look bigger. According to FEI Architect founder and principal Lam Shen Fei, there is usually the use of faux painting and a play on perspective to make a small space look bigger. “While, traditionally, the perception of space can be manipulated through the intervention of materials, there are other ways to maximise the use of small spaces. It is now a common trend, due to the rise in house prices in urban areas, where the defined plot ratio [limits] the amount of sellable area … [Read more...] about Know Your Stuff: How to make small spaces look bigger
3 ‘creator’ soft skills that can get you hired
It wasn’t so long ago that creators were dismissed as frivolous curiosities. YouTubers and TikTokers were seen as kids with too much time on their hands and Instagram influencers as wannabe celebrities with a narcissism streak. advertisement advertisement Today, we know better. Content creation is serious business. The industry was worth $13.8 billion in 2021 with brands, marketers, and social media platforms reliant on creators to reach critical audiences. Meanwhile, creators themselves have proven they are legitimate entrepreneurs who boast some serious hard skills: photography and video editing, SEO, small business financial management, and contract negotiation. And with some, like Miss Excel Kat Norton earning six figures in a single day by hawking Excel tips on TikTok, it’s no wonder a majority of Gen Z and Millennials say they’d consider getting paid for the content they post online . But creators have also brought back into focus some of … [Read more...] about 3 ‘creator’ soft skills that can get you hired
AT&T And Time Warner: Why Cord-Cutters Could Get Screwed Either Way
Let’s assume for a few minutes that the government’s attempt to block AT&T from buying Time Warner isn’t motivated by politics. advertisement advertisement Maybe the Department of Justice has a point: Putting the nation’s largest TV provider—and second-largest wireless carrier—in charge of the company that runs HBO and Turner networks could lead to higher prices and fewer choices. That, in turn, could weaken the factors that have allowed cord-cutting to flourish over the past few years–namely, a decline in traditional pay-TV viewers and a wave of new streaming alternatives. But even without AT&T, Time Warner could still move to increase its prices, especially if it turns around and merges with another major TV programmer. Unless the government becomes similarly opposed to mega-mergers between media companies–like the one that’s pending with Disney and Fox–cord-cutters could be worse off with or without a merged AT&T and Time Warner. Here’s … [Read more...] about AT&T And Time Warner: Why Cord-Cutters Could Get Screwed Either Way

As baby formula shortage worsens, families take desperate steps
Like most new moms, 26-year-old Veronica Gutierrez's life revolves around feeding her three-month-old daughter, Alessandra. For the first month, that meant mostly formula. But that formula was hard to find. She drove from store to store, so shaken by the empty shelves she began pumping her breast milk around the clock, in hopes she could draw out enough to feed Alessandra full time. "I had just gotten home from the hospital and I was in so much pain - even just having to jump in the car trying to find the formula, I was almost in tears," Gutierrez said. "There was that uncertainty whether I was actually going to find the formula," she said. "That's why I was working every day latching her on, even if she got just a little bit, because I knew, if I didn't, I would lose my milk supply." All night, Alessandra nurses. All day, Gutierrez pumps. Still, she considers herself lucky. Unlike millions of American parents, she's no longer worried where her baby's next meal will come from. … [Read more...] about As baby formula shortage worsens, families take desperate steps

China relaxes some COVID test rules for US, other travellers
(Image: AP) China has removed some COVID-19 test requirements for people flying in countries such as the United States and shortened the pre-departure quarantine for some inbound travellers, as it fine-tunes its measures to cope with the Omicron variant. The slight relaxations were made in response to factors including the "characteristics of coronavirus variants", according to notices from Chinese embassies and consulates that did not provide further details. From Friday, travellers from Dallas, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and Chicago will no longer need an RT-PCR test seven days before flying, or any antibody test, according to notices issued late on Tuesday from the Chinese embassy in the United States and several consulates. Those travellers will still need to do two RT-PCR tests within 48 or 24 hours of their flights - depending on which airport they are flying out of - plus another pre-flight antigen test, those notices showed. Travel in and out … [Read more...] about China relaxes some COVID test rules for US, other travellers
