Massive Internet Outage Caused By Amazon Cloud Glitch

February 28, 2017 by www.inc.com

A glitch at Amazon is causing numerous websites and apps that rely on the company's Amazon Web Services offering (AWS) to fail or deliver poor performance, especially for users on the East Coast of the United States. AWS is one of the world's largest providers of cloud services, and its currently hiccupping Amazon Simple Storage Service (which launched about a decade ago and is commonly referred to as Amazon S3) is today used by numerous online businesses as part of their critical infrastructure. The outage is, therefore, affecting many companies, including Netflix, Time, Pinterest, Business Insider, and Airbnb. Furthermore, because content from many providers that use AWS is loaded onto pages outside of their own sites, the outage is also affecting sites that do not directly use AWS themselves. Amazon has reported the issue on its AWS dashboard, stating, "We continue to experience high error rates with S3 in US-EAST-1, which is impacting various AWS services. We are working … [Read more...] about Massive Internet Outage Caused By Amazon Cloud Glitch

Why ‘recycled’ clothes are so hard to recycle

June 27, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

Today we make more clothing than ever before. And the driver for this is primarily economic, rather than human need. Over the past decade, the term “circular economy” has entered the fashion industry lexicon, wherein materials are made to be reused and recycled by design. advertisement advertisement Yet we haven’t seen the same level of recycling in fashion as we have in other spaces – such as with plastic recycling, for instance. And this is mainly because clothing-to-clothing recycling is much more difficult. The use of recycled polyester and cotton by brands such as H&M and Cotton On are key aspects of these companies’ sustainability initiatives – but the source of these recycled fibers usually isn’t clothing. Recycled polyester tends to come from plastic bottles , and recycled cotton is usually made from manufacturing waste. The fact is most clothing is simply not designed to be recycled. Even when it is, the fashion industry lacks the kind … [Read more...] about Why ‘recycled’ clothes are so hard to recycle

What the Business Cycle is Telling us About a Recession

June 27, 2022 by www.investopedia.com

If you're looking for capitulation in 2022, it's in the bond market. And that tells you that investors' confidence in the global economy is very low. Inside the stock market, it's all about defense. Defensive stocks, which include big healthcare companies and dividend-paying value stocks, have been driving the gains. An index of global defensive stocks put together by Goldman Sachs, which is heavy in healthcare giants, has climbed to more than an 18-month high relative to the MSCI AC World Index. Inside the U.S., the defensive ETF ticker DEF has been outperforming the Spider ETF SPY all last week and all year. For market watchers, this feels a whole lot like a recession trade. While investors in the capital markets are battening the hatches for a recession, money in the private markets is also drying up. The value of venture capital deals in the U.S. dropped more than 25% in the second quarter to just $1 trillion, according to Dealogic . M&A activity in the United States … [Read more...] about What the Business Cycle is Telling us About a Recession

June 28, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

This article first appeared in The Edge Malaysia Weekly, on June 20, 2022 - June 26, 2022. - A + A THE share price of DRB-Hicom Bhd has been on a downward trend since December 2020, when the shortage of semiconductors became apparent the world over. Last Friday, DRB-Hicom was trading at RM1.16 — its lowest since March 23, 2020. This means DRB-Hicom is now trading at the level when stocks tumbled in reaction to the first Movement Control Order (MCO), which was implemented in March 2020 to contain the spread of Covid-19. This is in contrast to other automotive or automotive-based groups listed on Bursa Malaysia. For example, Bermaz Auto Bhd is trading at more than double the level on March 23, 2020, and MBM Resources Bhd is 38% higher than at the start of the pandemic. Shares in Sime Darby Bhd, which is also a conglomerate like DRB-Hicom, were up 43.5% last Friday compared with March 23, 2020. Chatbots need to evolve to stay relevant in the age of virtual assistants

June 27, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

Our exposure to chatbots is at an all-time high. From customer service to commerce to healthcare, chatbots are the fastest growing brand communication channel , thanks to their ability to handle issue resolution, remove friction in surfacing common information, and enable self-service to relieve human bottlenecks. advertisement advertisement But the growing chatbot landscape shows signs of fracture. In a recent study, over half of consumers who use chatbots cite dissatisfaction due to the frustration caused by “inconsistent answers” across chat and human assistance, while ranking preference of digital service channels like social media, human chat, and even email over chatbots. A finer point still, 60% of consumers would still rather interact with a human than a brand’s chatbot because of the ability to solve more complex and personal problems. The irony is that a chatbot’s premise to exist is to offload human-to-human interactions while … [Read more...] about Chatbots need to evolve to stay relevant in the age of virtual assistants

How employers and candidates can adjust to the Great Reset

June 28, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

As recently as last month, news outlets across the country were still covering the Great Resignation —the unprecedented shift in turnover that saw employees leaving their jobs in droves in search of better positions. Yet in light of the recent tech-stock selloff and economic downturn, it looks like the tech industry’s insatiable appetite for new talent is slowing among certain industries. This is being touted as the Great Reset . advertisement advertisement Over the last few years, enthusiastic tech founders were able to take advantage of an unusual period in history where the market was flush with capital from overzealous investors and government-backed stimulus. Those founders are now waking up to a new reality and discovering that the money they raised is being burned at an unsustainable pace. Companies are making difficult decisions as a result, including a wave of layoffs across the tech industry. Other companies, including Meta , are … [Read more...] about How employers and candidates can adjust to the Great Reset

When the push for ‘cultural fit’ creates a DEI blindspot

June 26, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com

When you’re hiring new candidates, how much do you prioritize cultural fit? Your answer to this question may depend on whether you’d consider your company’s culture a broth or a gumbo. advertisement advertisement A broth has exactly one consistency and flavor, while a gumbo features distinct ingredients, each one retaining its unique flavor while contributing perfectly to the overall taste. In my years within the DEI space, I’ve observed quite a few companies adopt a “broth” recruiting approach, vetting candidates based on how seamlessly they believe they’ll fit into their existing corporate culture. Ideally, this practice should revolve around assessing how well candidates align with a company’s values and vision. In reality, it may mean something more arbitrary—using the same jargon and lingo, laughing at the same jokes, adopting the “right” business casual look, etc. Some diverse candidates do check these boxes but many others do not—and their … [Read more...] about When the push for ‘cultural fit’ creates a DEI blindspot

Seahawks hold off Washington, clinch NFL playoff berth

December 21, 2020 by sports.inquirer.net

Running back Carlos Hyde #30 of the Seattle Seahawks rushes for a third quarter touchdown against the Washington Football Team at FedExField on December 20, 2020 in Landover, Maryland. Patrick Smith/Getty Images/AFP The Seattle Seahawks punched their NFL playoff ticket on Sunday, rushing for 181 yards and thwarting a late Washington rally in a 20-15 victory. Seattle is back in the postseason for the ninth time in 11 seasons under coach Pete Carroll. The Seahawks appeared to be cruising toward victory when they took a 20-3 lead early in the third quarter. Chris Carson, Carlos Hyde and quarterback Russell Wilson all topped 50 yards rushing. Hyde scored one of the Seahawks’ two touchdowns on a 50-yard run and Wilson connected with tight end Jacob Hollister on the other. But a turnover and a spell of offensive doldrums opened the door to Washington backup quarterback Dwayne Haskins, who engineered two fourth-quarter touchdown drives.
