Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline Elon Musk and Steve Wozniak are among hundreds of high-profile technologists, entrepreneurs and researchers calling on AI labs to immediately stop work on powerful AI systems, urging developers to step back from the “out-of-control race” to deploy ever more advanced products while we better assess the risks advanced artificial intelligence poses to humanity. Key Facts Any AI lab working on systems more powerful than GPT-4—the powerful engine driving OpenAI’s Chat-GPT—should “immediately pause” work for at least six months so humanity can take stock of the risks such advanced AI systems pose, urged an open letter published Wednesday by the Future of Life Institute and signed by more than 1,000 people. Any pause should be “public and verifiable” and include all key players, the letter said, urging governments to “step in” and force the issue for those who are too slow or unwilling to stop. Name Change Celebrates Inclusive Future For Seattle Audubon Society
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The non-profit organisation, Seattle Audubon Society, has formally changed its name and will now be known as Birds Connect Seattle © Copyright by GrrlScientist | hosted by Forbes Last August, I told you about the Seattle Audubon Society , a community-based bird conservation and birding organisation where I was a member, and its decision to change its name to be more inclusive to people from all walks of life (more here ). They’ve made their choice to formally change their name to “Birds Connect Seattle”. That’s quite a mouthful, isn’t it? This bold decision contrasts with the National Audubon Society ’s recent decision, reached after one year of deliberations, namely, not to change their name. “I understand people may be wondering how that is possible if ‘Audubon’ remains in our name. That is a question the Board has grappled with, and ultimately, they decided that the organization transcends … [Read more...] about Name Change Celebrates Inclusive Future For Seattle Audubon Society

Click here to get on the newsletter list ! I t started in tech. But could it be spreading beyond Silicon Valley and startup world to other major mainstream firms? I’m speaking of the “ rolling layoff ”—the name one former human resources executive gave to describe companies making job cuts in a series of rounds, rather than executing them all at one time. Disney said Monday it plans to cut 7,000 employees starting this week, my colleague Brian Bushard reported . “A second, larger round of notifications will happen in April with several thousand more staff reductions, and we expect to commence the final round of notifications before the beginning of the summer to reach our 7,000-job target,” … [Read more...] about The New Reality Of ‘Rolling Layoffs,’ AI’s Impact On Jobs And The Worst Email Sign-Offs
Sergio Ermotti’s 100-Day Action Plan As The Shocking New CEO Of UBS/Credit Suisse
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Sergio Ermotti is the right man to lead the UBS takeover of Credit Suisse and administer the required shock to the people of Credit Suisse. This is the case because of three fundamental truths. 1) The key to successful mergers or acquisitions is getting the new combined culture right. 2) This is not a merger. It’s a takeover in which Credit Suisse’s people will need to adopt the UBS culture or go elsewhere. 3) Ermotti has done this before, righting UBS’ culture following its own meltdown. This is why Ermotti’s 100-day action plan as the CEO combining the entities will most likely involve shocking the Credit Suisse people by folding them into UBS’s culture. This will involve more telling than co-creation to force compliance with the UBS way of doing things. Expect this to be painful and many of the Credit Suisse people to fall by the wayside. While this is almost always the last choice way for a new executive onboarding into … [Read more...] about Sergio Ermotti’s 100-Day Action Plan As The Shocking New CEO Of UBS/Credit Suisse
The Answer To Whether I’m Too Old To Get Another Dog
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Author Wasted No Time In Solving His Dilemma A couple of months ago I wrote an article questioning whether getting a dog at this point in my life is a good idea. While my wife and I strongly missed the companionship and unconditional love we got from our pets, our age, health status, and lifestyle were definitely considerations. We were free to travel without having to find a sitter, we didn’t have to rush home after dinner and a show to the poor pup to let him out of his crate. And we didn’t have expensive vet bills! I closed the article with the question of whether the dog we lost 6 months before that would be our last dog. That question — defining the problem — was the first step. Here’s our answer to the question in the form of a photo of our new puppy, Beau, half border collie and half poodle. He’s currently about 16 weeks old and weighs 16 pounds, on his way to about 30 to 35 lbs. Yes, he’s adorable. But … [Read more...] about The Answer To Whether I’m Too Old To Get Another Dog
Planetary Parade: See Five Planets Line Up In The Night Sky This Week
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Have you seen the “planetary parade” after sunset? It’s getting a lot of media attention, partly because Jupiter is about to sink into the Sun’s glare and ruin it, but you can still glimpse some or all or five planets naked-eye and with binoculars this week. Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Uranus and Mars are all visible right after sunset—though Jupiter and Mercury could be tricky depending on where you observe from. Get somewhere high with a clear view of the western horizon to watch the sunset. After sunset have a look for Jupiter and Mercury very close to the horizon. You may need binoculars. Above them will be a very bright Venus, while high in the sky will be red Mars, flanked by an almost First Quarter Moon tonight. If you want to watch it online then The Virtual Telescope Project will stream it live at 17:45 UTC (13:45 EDT) on Tuesday, March 28, 2023.
