Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Drivers across the United States are suffering unprecedented pain at the pump, with national average prices spiking above $5 per gallon . Fortunately an inflation-busting option is ready to go – modeling shows electric vehicles save drivers thousands per year compared to internal combustion engines in most states. But these consumer-protection economics hinge upon the U.S. Senate passing legislation that has languished for months after passing the House of Representatives. The existing $7,500 federal EV tax credit cap of 200,000 vehicles sold has been surpassed by GM and Tesla TSLA while Ford, Nissan, and Toyota will likely exceed it this year. Without those extremely valuable incentives, EVs and billions in annual savings will slip out of reach for many families. Biden asks Congress to pause gas tax to help lower record pump prices
- A + A WASHINGTON (June 22): US President Joe Biden on Wednesday called on Congress to pass a three-month suspension of the federal gasoline tax to help combat record pump prices and provide temporary relief for American families this summer. "We can bring down the price of gas and give families just a little bit of relief," Biden said in a White House address. The president also urged States to temporarily suspend State fuel taxes, which are often higher than federal rates, the official said, and will challenge major oil companies to bring ideas on how to bring back idled refining capacity when they meet with his energy secretary on Thursday. Biden and his advisers have been discussing the issue for months amid increasing pressure to act as record-high gas prices weigh down the president's poll ratings and cast a dark cloud over Democrats' chances of retaining congressional power in November's elections. A suspension of the 18.4 cents per gallon federal … [Read more...] about Biden asks Congress to pause gas tax to help lower record pump prices

- A + A NEW YORK (June 25): With US stocks on track to mark their worst first half of the year in more than 50 years, investors are studying a range of metrics to determine whether the coming months could bring relief or more of the same. By any stretch, the first half of 2022 (1H22) has been a challenging one for investors. The S&P 500 is down around 18% year-to-date, on track for its worst first half of any year since 1970, according to S&P Dow Jones Indices, as the US Federal Reserve (Fed) tightens monetary policy in its fight against the highest inflation in decades. Bonds, which investors typically count on to counterbalance stock declines in their portfolios, have fared little better: The US bond market, as measured by the Vanguard Total Bond Market Index fund, is down 10.8% for the year to date, putting it on pace for its worst performance in modern history. With investor expectations fluctuating between continued high inflation and an economic … [Read more...] about Bruised US stock investors brace for more pain in 2H22

These renters were hit hardest by the pandemic and they’re still struggling
(CNN) Millions of people struggled to pay their rent during the pandemic. But that hardship fell disproportionately on renters of color, those living with children and people renting in the South, according to an exclusive new report from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. The number of renters that fell behind on rent peaked at 15 million in January 2021, the report showed. Since then, federal aid programs -- including billions of dollars in rent relief and an eviction moratorium -- plus a recovering economy, have reduced that number. But there remained 10.4 million renters who said they are not caught up on rent as of March, according to CBPP. By September 2020, 55% of all adult renters reported a loss of income due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but for Latino and Black renters the share was even higher, at 65% and 57% respectively.
