“I was born to play football, just like Beethoven was born to write music and Michelangelo was born to paint.” Pelé, born Edson Arantes do Nascimento on October 23, 1940, in Três Corações , a small town in Minas Gerais, Brazil, has died at Albert Einstein hospital in São Paulo after a long illness, at the age of 82. Pelé, the Brazilian virtuoso whose skill and athleticism saw him universally regarded as one of the world’s greatest-ever footballers had a colon tumour removed in 2021, and was readmitted to Albert Einstein hospital in São Paulo in November amid deteriorating health. A hospital statement on Thursday confirmed the death of “our dear King of Football” at 3.27pm local time, “due to the failure of multiple organs, a result of the progression of cancer of colon associated with his previous clinical condition.” Known as “The King” (O Rei) in Brazil, Pelé scored 12 goals in 14 World Cup final games. He played at four World Cup finals, winning the tournament in … [Read more...] about Born to play football – Pelé passes in Sao Paulo hospital, aged 82

Busting That Chinese Spy Balloon Is Harder Than You Think (Updated: ‘Well That Was Easy’)
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Pentagon has been tracking a suspected Chinese surveillance balloon which flew over sensitive areas in Montana in recent days, apparently the latest of several such incursions. President Biden reportedly proposed that the intruder be shot down , but the Pentagon opposed this action, citing the risk of civilian casualties. In fact, bringing down this type of balloon may be extremely difficult, as it is likely to be highly resistant to the available weapons. It may look fragile, but the sheer size and construction of a stratospheric balloon makes it all but invulnerable. There is also the problem of getting to it. Such balloons ride high in the stratosphere , far above the airliners. They do this to take advantage of the change in wind direction with altitude to steer themselves to where they are needed like sailing ships, then circling above a point of interest. The U.S. military has its own stratospheric spy … [Read more...] about Busting That Chinese Spy Balloon Is Harder Than You Think (Updated: ‘Well That Was Easy’)
Oddsmakers Believe The Green Bay Packers Will Finish Last In The NFC North
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin With or without Aaron Rodgers, the folks in the desert didn't give the Green Bay Packers much of a chance to win the NFC North on 2023. Before it became clear that Rodgers’ time in Green Bay was over, Fanduel gave the Packers the third-best odds to win the division at +340. Now, with Rodgers expected to be playing for the New York Jets in 2023, Green Bay’s odds are at +410. What is fascinating, though, is Fanduel believes the Packers will finish last in the NFC North. The last time that happened was 2005, when Green Bay went 4-12. In fact, the Packers have been either first or second in the division 14 of the past 17 years and third just three times (2008, 2017, 2018). Fanduel currently has Detroit as the divisional frontrunner at +130. The Lions haven't won the NFC North since 1993. Minnesota, which won the division by four games in 2022, is picked for second at +310. Chicago, which had the worst record in the … [Read more...] about Oddsmakers Believe The Green Bay Packers Will Finish Last In The NFC North
Paddy ‘The Baddy’ Pimblett Touts Mental Health, Being Approachable Part Of UFC Life
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Everyone who’s ever met or spoken to Paddy Pimblett could probably attest to one thing. He’s as easygoing as anyone you'll ever talk to. And the simplest conversations with the mixed martial arts fighter feel like a chat with an old friend down at the pub. Perhaps it was for that reason that Pimblett, who called me “fella” and “lad” throughout our short Zoom interview earlier this month, seems like the kind of that Guy Ritchie would cast in one of his films. I mention that and ask if he sees “Paddy The Baddy” in future motion pictures. “Yeah, definitely,” Pimblett said. “I’ll be in movies one day, lad. Don't worry about that. I’ll be in films, 100%!” Pimblett kicked off the month of March with a trip to Southern California, where he hoped to catch some sun and train with a group of professional MMA fighters from Indonesia. While on his trip to San Diego and Los Angeles, Pimblett visited with UFC legend Chuck … [Read more...] about Paddy ‘The Baddy’ Pimblett Touts Mental Health, Being Approachable Part Of UFC Life
What Is A Design Institution Today? London’s Design Museum Director Tim Marlow Considers
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin “I’ve always been attracted to the momentum of institutions,” begins the art historian Tim Marlow. “I like a busy place. I want to bring different audiences and for them to have communal experiences in a shared space.” He clarifies: “This is what museums do best.” As director and chief executive of the Design Museum in London, a position he’s held since 2019, he’s in a prime spot to achieve this. I’m meeting Marlow at the museum west of the city in Kensington, housed in the former Grade II* listed Commonwealth Institute. A curious building with its place in time, it opened in 1962 to inform and educate about the Commonwealth of Nations. The listing notes say its founding came “at a critical moment in the evolution of the modern Commonwealth out of the old Empire.” Meanwhile, the design and displays conveyed a “sense of idealism and a new start.” It, therefore, feels like a fitting place to be occupied by a museum also … [Read more...] about What Is A Design Institution Today?
