Chris Solari Detroit Free Press Published 6:52 p.m. UTC Aug 6, 2018 EAST LANSING — Michigan State is already down one returning starter early in preseason camp. Coach Mark Dantonio on Monday said cornerback Josiah Scott will miss at least two months with an unspecified injury suffered during a non-contact drill. The sophomore helped the Spartans finish 37th in the nation in pass defense, allowing 202.3 yards per game. MSU allowed just 15 passing touchdowns and picked off 14 passes lastseason. Opponents completed 56.5 percent of their passes. Of the 241 completions against the secondary, only 29 went for 20-or-more yards. Scott and returning junior Justin Layne both at times were honored among the nation’s best on a given week for their job in press coverage, holding opponents under 200 yards passing in eight games and less than 100 twice. The 5-foot-10, 175-pound Scott earned Big Ten Network All-Freshman Team honors after making 30 tackles with a pair of … [Read more...] about Michigan State football’s Josiah Scott out for two months with injury
Marlowe Alter Detroit Free Press Published 11:01 p.m. UTC Jul 26, 2018 Ah, football, we missed you. The hype and smack-talk is beginning to bubble, so here's an interesting nugget for our pigskin craving readers. College Football News analyzed the past five years of each program looking for "Elite Wins." Michigan State performed quite well in this study. Michigan did not. An "Elite Win" is a home victory over an FBS team that finished with two losses or fewer, or a road or bowl victory against a team that finished with three losses. An extra half-win is added when a team earns a road or bowl victory over a team that finished with two losses or fewer. How did our schools score in this "Elite Win" analysis? Michigan State, 8, tied with Alabama for fourth-most. Central Michigan, 2. Western Michigan, 1½. Michigan, 0. Eastern Michigan, 0. That's right, CMU and WMU both have more "Elite Wins" than Michigan, which has a big fat zero. That's tied for … [Read more...] about Michigan football has fewer ‘Elite Wins’ than CMU, WMU since 2013

PHOTO CREDIT: Getty Images While women across the United States rally around the promise of a monumental cultural shift under the hashtag, #MeToo, Saudi Arabia granted women permission to walk through the doors of a football stadium for the first time. For the first time in history, women and men stood as one - in this part of the world at least - supporting their teams from the stands, after years of being denied what most would view as a basic right. Last week, in the country's capital, Riyadh, women for the first time were allowed to watch Al-Ahli against Al-Batin from inside the confines of the King Fahd Stadium. The following day they were given the freedom to watch a match at the King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah. And today, a new vibe of inclusivity spreads. "It's a historic game, the first in which Saudi families can enter a stadium together," said Lina Al-Maenna, a director of Jeddah United, Saudi Arabia's first women-only basketball team, in an interview with Arab News. … [Read more...] about Progress For Women in Saudi Arabia Allows Them To Enter A Football Stadium For The First Time. Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, one of the deadliest goalscorers in world football, is close to joining Arsenal FC. German news publication Bild says Aubameyang’s father/agent is in transit so he can meet with Arsenal executives to discuss a £50 million move. Should Aubameyang maintain his current form, Arsenal would get considerable value for money on its investment. The 28-year-old Gabon international is at the peak of his powers, scoring 100 goals in his last 118 games in all competitions for Dortmund, and – just like former Arsenal icon Thierry Henry – is capable of scoring goals that are works of art. This deft one-touch volley from ten yards in 2017 is just one example: This could be the best Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Ousmane Dembélé combination yet. Truly outrageous! What a goal ???????? pic.twitter.com/XgBvuTnFeB — Football on BT Sport (@btsportfootball) May 20, 2017 Arsenal may be loathe to lose wantaway … [Read more...] about One of the deadliest strikers in world football is close to joining Arsenal for £50 million — and the stats show he’s better than Alexis Sánchez
