The United Sugar Producers Federation, Asociacion de Agricultores de La Carlota y Pontevedra Inc. (AALCPI) and La Carlota Mill District Multi-Purpose Cooperative (LCMDMPC) cheered President Marcos’ decision to scrap initial plans to import 300,000 metric tons of sugar. The sugar groups said importing the sweetener at this time was “ill-advised’’ given that five mills in Negros Occidental, the country’s largest sugar-producing province, have resumed operations. The Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) earlier issued an order to import 300,000 metric tons of sugar to tame surging prices and shore up depleted local supply given increasing demand. The order, however, was subsequently rejected “in no uncertain terms” by Mr. Marcos, a move that AACLPI and LCMDMPC general manager David Alba welcomed. Alba said in a statement that based on data from the SRA, four million bags of sugar have already entered the country. He, however, claimed that the imported supply had not been accessed … [Read more...] about Marcos’ move to nix sugar imports cheered

Thailand to apply for Guinness World Record for longest petrified log
Thailand is trying to break a Guinness World Record. Officials believe the longest petrified log in the world is in Thailand’s Tak province near the Myanmar border. Apparently, the 120,000 year old log at Doi Soi Malai National Park stretches 72.2 metres, the same height as a 20 storey building. China’s Qitai, Xinjiang currently holds the title of the world’s longest petrified log at 38 metres. With Thailand’s log significantly longer, the Ministry of Natural Resource and Environment announced yesterday that they are preparing to apply for the Guinness World Record and claim the title. The wood was of the Thong Bueng tree species, usually found in southern Thailand and the Malay Peninsula. The minister says that during ancient times, the tree may have towered to more than 100 metres in a wet tropical forest. Economists see slower growth in 2H22 following stellar 2Q22 GDP data
- A + A KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 12): The GDP growth in second quarter of 2022 (2Q22), which came in at 8.9% year-on-year (y-o-y), has exceeded market consensus expectation of a 7% increase. Despite the "above expectation" economic growth, economists are warning that the pace of growth is likely to slow in the second half of 2022 (2H22) on possible weaker consumer spending and external uncertainties. RHB Bank said that it is anticipating a slower growth momentum into 2H22. "The momentum in consumer spending might be tapered towards the year end amidst weaker discretionary spending following the tightening of monetary conditions, higher costs of living due to intensifying inflationary pressures coupled with the expiry of some pandemic-related measures," said RHB Bank economist Chin Yee Sian and associate research analyst Wong Xian Yong. On top of that, Chin and Wong expect a slower momentum ahead for the gross fixed capital formation (GFCF) with downside risks from lower … [Read more...] about Economists see slower growth in 2H22 following stellar 2Q22 GDP data
2022 Commonwealth Games: Not just CWG medals, Indian weightlifters’ steady progress is also very encouraging
Weightlifters Jeremy Lalrinnunga, Mirabai Chanu and Achinta Sheuli at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. (Image source: Twitter/Jeremy Lalrinnunga) “Saikhom is worthy,” tweeted Chris Helmsworth, captioning a photograph of Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, the diminutive lifter from Manipur, holding up her 2022 Commonwealth Games (CWG) medal, a tongue-in-cheek reference to the Australian actor’s most famous screen Avatar as the comic book hero Thor, whose hammer can only be lifted by those who are “worthy”. Chanu’s Games record-breaking lifts, coupled with her infectious, joyous persona, has made her the darling of India’s campaign in Birmingham and a social media star in her own right, to continue the thread she started with her unprecedented Olympic silver in Tokyo less than a year back. It’s not just her. India’s 15-member weightlifting contingent took the Games by storm, winning 10 medals, including three gold, to top the standings for the event, just like they did in the … [Read more...] about 2022 Commonwealth Games: Not just CWG medals, Indian weightlifters’ steady progress is also very encouraging

2022 Commonwealth Games: The spectacular rise of 3000m steeplechaser Avinash Sable
Avinash Sable, 27, at the Tokyo Olympics. (Image source US Army Wikimedia Commons 2.0) One of the great stories in Indian track & field in the last 4-5 years, apart from the world-beating Neeraj Chopra in javelin, has been the rise of Avinash Sable, the 3000m steeplechaser who will try to do something unprecedented at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham on August 6—win a medal for India in the event. His best time, 8:12:48 minutes, the national record, would have won him the silver in every edition of the CWG except for the 2018 Gold Coast Games, where he would have finished 5th. Avinash Sable (Image: Twitter/avinash3000m) The steeplechase, like any other distance running event, is the fiefdom of the East Africans. At the CWG, that means Kenya, who have won the gold in every edition since 1990, and led a full sweep of the podium in 2018. India have never had a steeplechase runner who could stand toe-to-toe with the top runners in the world, till Sable’s heady … [Read more...] about 2022 Commonwealth Games: The spectacular rise of 3000m steeplechaser Avinash Sable
