Singaporean and Thai swindler couple arrested in Malaysia
The Singaporean and Thai couple who allegedly swindled millions of dollars in luxury goods has been arrested in Malaysia on Thursday. The couple are a 26 year old Singaporean man named Pi Jiapeng, and a 27 year old Thai woman named Pansuk Siriwipa. Malaysian police caught the alleged criminals at a budget hotel in the city of Skudai in Malaysia’s southern state of Johor. The husband and wife had allegedly conned customers into paying for watches and luxury handbags worth US$32 million in total between January and June, and failed to deliver the items. Singaporean police arrested Pi on June 27, but then released him on bail. They confiscated his passport while the investigation was ongoing. The police also asked Pansuk to surrender her passport. The couple then went AWOL and no one could contact them. - A + A BANGKOK (Aug 12): Asia Aviation Plc (AAV), a major shareholder of Thai AirAsia Co Ltd (TAA), reported total revenue of 2.78 billion baht in the second quarter of 2022 (2Q 2022), up 157% year-on-year (y-o-y). This follows a strong recovery in the tourism industry, driven by solid domestic growth and reinstatement of key international routes especially to India, Malaysia and Singapore, it said. The company registered a loss of 4.72 billion baht in 2Q 2022 following the setbacks from the doubling of global fuel prices, due to consumption outpacing supply globally, higher maintenance costs and the depreciation of baht against the US dollar. In the quarter reviewed, TAA carried 1.68 million passengers, or an increase of 133% y-o-y, with a load factor of 75%, up 14 percentage points compared with the same period last year.
