TMD fails to issue weather warning

August 3, 2015 by thethaiger.com

PHUKET: Despite today’s torrential rains, which led to flash flooding in several parts of the island, the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has yet to issue any weather warning for Phuket. “The TMD did report that there would be rain fall all day, which could cause landslides. However, no warnings have been issued,” Santhawat Riwleung, chief of the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) Phuket office, told the Phuket Gazette . According to a TMD report, Phuket weather will be cloudy with scattered thundershowers. The island will have southwesterly winds ranging from 20 to 35 km/hr and waves reaching about two meters today. Wind and heavy rain damaged utility poles near Sapam Temple this morning, confirmed Lt Col Rungrit Rattanapagdee of Phuket City Traffic Police. “One pole must be replaced, as it was broken. The others need to be put back upright,” Lt Col Rungrit said. “Phuket Provincial Electricity Authority (PEA) are at the scene. In the meantime, … [Read more...] about TMD fails to issue weather warning

Distracted EJ Obiena finishes way out of vault medal

August 4, 2021 by sports.inquirer.net

Philippines’ Ernest John Obiena competes in the men’s pole vault final during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo on August 3, 2021. (Photo by Ben STANSALL / AFP) TOKYO—With one leap left to rescue his Tokyo Olympics stint, the last thing EJ Obiena needed was a distraction. Unfortunately he got one when he needed it the least. Obiena failed to hurdle the 5.80-meter qualifying mark and finished out of the medal in men’s pole vault at Olympic Stadium on Thursday, rounding out a day when the Philippines chalked a silver officially in the medal tally and kept one gold hunt alive in men’s boxing. Obiena nearly cleared the mark on his first two tries, tagging the bar on descent both times to necessitate a do-or-die vault. He eased off on his first approach, and that’s when issues with the clock cropped up. Obiena was pointing at the clock at the chief timer before hurriedly trying to complete his third attempt. He did not even make a takeoff and was … [Read more...] about Distracted EJ Obiena finishes way out of vault medal

Clea Shearer starts chemotherapy for breast cancer

May 20, 2022 by edition.cnn.com

(CNN) "The Home Edit's" Clea Shearer has started chemotherapy in her battle against breast cancer. Shearer, one of the co-founders of The Home Edit and the Netflix show of the same name, took to Instagram Thursday to tell her followers what was going on. "Today marked my first day of Chemo. As the day approached, I started sleeping less, worrying more, and even had one big tantrum last night that I can only describe as a child who's next in line for a huge roller coaster, and last minute screams, "I can't do this!! Let me off!" No one was letting me off the ride, but everyone let me cry as long as I needed to. When I was done, I picked myself up, took a walk with the kids, and laughed at Sutton's jokes. There's no better medicine than a walk and a laugh," she wrote. Shearer continued: "I showed up for my transfusion today with my chemo bag full of so many blankets, snacks, and supplies, that I'm sure it looked like we were planning on staying the week … [Read more...] about Clea Shearer starts chemotherapy for breast cancer

US university charges on with ‘power suit’ as a new battery for electric cars, spacecraft

May 10, 2022 by www.thestar.com.my

ORLANDO, Florida: University of Central Florida scientists are charging on with an experimental battery capable of reinventing how automobiles and spacecraft are made. By reworking the idea of energy sources, a UCF research group is creating a lightweight battery that would double as the outer shell of a vehicle in what the group is calling its “power suit” project. Led by UCF College of Engineering Professor Jayan Thomas, the group plans to accomplish this with nanotechnology – supercapacitor composite material involving graphene arranged over carbon fiber in a fan-like structure, Thomas said. “The advantage is its lightweight, and can increase the mileage because you’re reducing the weight of the car and in addition to that, you can store energy like your battery in the same composites,” said Thomas, who conducts his research at UCF’s NanoScience Technology Center. While reducing weight, the suit is thought to increase an electric car’s range by 25% to 30%; equating to about … [Read more...] about US university charges on with ‘power suit’ as a new battery for electric cars, spacecraft

How Infant Formula Startup Bobbie Survived an FDA Crackdown and Recall at Launch

September 30, 2020 by www.inc.com

Laura Modi was sitting in a meeting when Sarah Hardy, her co-founder at the infant formula startup Bobbie , arrived with alarming news. "Very shocked, she says to me, 'The FDA is at the warehouse!'" recalls Modi. It was May 2019: T wo weeks after the launch of Bobbie's pilot . A team of nurses, lactation specialists, and doulas were traversing San Francisco, hand-delivering product to the company's earliest adopters. Bobbie's advisers had warned Modi that at some point they'd be inspected. But she never thought it would come so soon, before the fledgling business had even cracked its shell. At the warehouse, Modi and Hardy encountered two uniformed U.S. Food and Drug Administration agents, armed with clipboards, who had been alerted to Bobbie's launch by early press. The agents reviewed the contents of a box. The labeling, they informed the founders, did not comply with FDA requirements. "Talk about my heart dropping in my stomach," says Modi. To keep Bobbie … [Read more...] about How Infant Formula Startup Bobbie Survived an FDA Crackdown and Recall at Launch

Energy Flexibility And The Push For Carbon Net-Zero

May 20, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin International business executive and highly qualified engineer, currently division president for Eaton ’s Electrical Sector in EMEA. Conversations about the energy transition tend to focus on outcomes. The United Nation’s targets are well known—world leaders have signed up to achieve carbon net-zero by 2050 and limit global warming to less than 1.5 degrees Celsius compared to preindustrial levels. Less intently discussed is how the world will meet these targets. Countries are moving at different speeds as they develop appropriate regulatory regimes and work out new approaches to energy generation and management, with little time available to them if they are to succeed in mitigating climate change. Some of this is to be expected. Energy strategies, based on factors such as available natural resources and existing infrastructure, are rooted in decades of history. Yet the need for change is clear, with … [Read more...] about Energy Flexibility And The Push For Carbon Net-Zero

Why Would Russia Fire A ‘Syrian’ S-300 Missile At Israeli Jets?

May 20, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin If the recent report that an advanced Syrian S-300 air defense missile was fired at Israeli Air Force (IAF) fighter jets for the first time is indeed accurate, it could be a big deal. Israel’s Channel 13 news reported on May 16 that an S-300 missile was fired at Israeli jets after they attacked targets near the northwestern Syrian city of Masyaf on the night of May 13. The S-300 was fired as the jets were returning to base. According to the report, the system’s radar did not lock onto any of the Israeli aircraft and, therefore, posed no serious danger to them. It’s possible Russia was attempting to send a signal to Israel by firing the system for the first time. If so, it wouldn’t be Moscow’s first attempt to signal its desire for Israel to limit its air campaign over Syria. Russia delivered Syria those S-300s for the first time in 2018 shortly after an incident involving Israel. In September of that year, … [Read more...] about Why Would Russia Fire A ‘Syrian’ S-300 Missile At Israeli Jets?
