Mideast sandstorms snarl traffic, close schools, harm health
The sandstorm badly hampered visibility in Riyadh. RIYADH - Sandstorms across the Middle East have delayed flights, closed schools and hospitalised thousands -- a phenomenon experts say could worsen as climate change warps regional weather patterns. Saudi Arabia on Tuesday became the latest country blanketed with dust that slowed traffic and made iconic towers in the capital difficult to see from more than a few hundred metres (yards) away. Emergency rooms in Riyadh hospitals had received some 1,285 people suffering from respiratory problems over 24 hours as a result of the sandstorm, the state-run Al-Ekhbariya channel reported. Electronic signs along Riyadh's highways warned drivers to reduce their speed because of the lower visibility, even as life largely went on as usual in the kingdom. The national meteorology centre predicted that "surface dusty winds" originating in the east and bringing a thick grey haze would continue west towards the Muslim holy cities of Mecca and … [Read more...] about Mideast sandstorms snarl traffic, close schools, harm health
Fired-up Djokovic braced for Alcaraz and Nadal challenge at French Open
King and his court: Novak Djokovic at last year's French Open PARIS - Novak Djokovic admits he will be fired up by the fiasco of his high-profile deportation from Australia when he targets a record-equalling 21st major on his Grand Slam return at the French Open. World number one Djokovic captured a second Roland Garros title in 2021 followed by a sixth Wimbledon to move to 20 majors alongside Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. However, his unseemly exit from Melbourne following his refusal to be vaccinated opened the door for Nadal to claim a second Australian Open and 21st Grand Slam crown. "It's something that I never faced before," said Djokovic, who turns 35 on Sunday, the opening day of the French Open. "The amount of pressure and everything that I was feeling in the first few months of the year, as much as I've felt pressure in my life and my career, that was something really on a whole different level." Djokovic has played only five tournaments in 2022 but arrives in … [Read more...] about Fired-up Djokovic braced for Alcaraz and Nadal challenge at French Open

Royal Flush: Inside Crypto’s Most Exclusive Gathering
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin P oker chips, high stakes, and big money. Throughout last week, a few yards away from the Caribbean's largest casino in the Bahamian capital, Nassau, about 2,000 people gathered at the Baha Mar resort’s convention center to discuss cryptocurrencies and the next iteration of the World Wide Web a.k.a Web3. Just last month, a similar albeit much larger crowd took over Miami Beach to pay homage to the invention that started it all—bitcoin. But if the 25,000-person expo in South Florida felt like Coachella for the bitcoin faithful , the latest summit, dubbed “Crypto Bahamas”, inched closer in resemblance to the World Economic Forum’s Davos conference, not minding the casual dress code. Pretty much everyone from CEOs to developers wore flip-flops, sneakers, and t-shirts bearing slogans such as “NFTs are a scam” and “Burnt Finance”. Co-organized by billionaire Sam Bankman-Fried’s crypto derivatives exchange FTX and the … [Read more...] about Royal Flush: Inside Crypto’s Most Exclusive Gathering
Walmart Is Hiring 150,000 Workers and Giving Out $550 Million in Bonuses
Earlier in the week, I wrote about Amazon's plans to hire 100,000 new workers to handle the surge in online shopping . Now Walmart has announced similar plans, except the company plans to go even further--adding 150,000 new employees between now and May. Those employees will staff up Walmart's stores, distribution centers, and online fulfillment centers, according to a company statement . Walmart will also pay its 1.4 million current employees an extra $550 million in bonuses starting April 2. Full-time employees will get a $300 bonus, and part-time employees will receive $150 each. The company's statement also said that it will pay its regular quarterly employee bonus a month early, at the end of April instead of May. At a time when companies in communities across America are shutting down and laying off employees, the fact that the world's largest retailer is adding to its workforce is welcome news. Especially following on Amazon's move to do the same. While … [Read more...] about Walmart Is Hiring 150,000 Workers and Giving Out $550 Million in Bonuses
InCharge COO Terry O’Day: Fleet Charging EVs Is About To Get Real
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin I ran into an old acquaintance at the 2022 ACT Expo in Long Beach last week. Terry O’Day has been involved with electric vehicles for over 25 years, and our paths have crossed, indirectly or maybe directly, here and there, over the years. O’Day is currently the Chief Operating Officer of InCharge Energy , and we talked about how InCharge fits into the fleet charging environment in 2022, how thinking through total cost of ownership convinces fleet managers and how cheap solar panels can show us a way to get more EVs to more people . But first, a bit of history . Terry O’Day : I’ve been in the EV charging business since 1996, it was my first job in my career and this is my fifth EV startup. My wife worked on the EV1 marketing and we were in the movie [2006’s Who Killed The Electric Car? ].
