Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Upon return from a family vacation three summers ago, economist Ike Brannon remarked at a subsequent lunch about an individual at the resort who was almost literally covered in tattoos. This was an expensive resort, and Brannon wondered how he and his family were sharing the same pool. To be clear, Brannon’s wonderment about the inked up vacationer wasn’t of the nose-upturned variety; rather he wanted to know what profession afforded so much individuality and disposable income. It turns out his poolmate was a chef. To younger readers, the mention of chef likely elicits a “so what?” response. For those born in the 1970s or earlier, the response is different. We remember . We remember when chef was a “dead end” job for, yes, people with tattoos. They were referred to as cooks then. It’s a long or short way of saying that the economic thinker in Brannon was celebrating a happy truth about prosperity: it elevates all manner of … [Read more...] about Book Review: Dana Brown’s Entertaining and Insightful Memoir of Vanity Fair, ‘Dilettante.’

Diesel’s 100% surge and scarcity deny farmers their ‘lifeblood’
- A + A (May 19): Farmers from Iowa to Ukraine are grappling with surging diesel prices and an unsteady supply, forcing them to spend unprecedented sums on fuel in a chaotic market and raising concerns about the autumn harvest. In the US, where corn and soybean producers are rushing to sow after rains and cold temperatures forced delays, filling a tractor tank daily now costs some farmers US$1,000, twice what it was a year ago. And the most intensive part of the farming season is still ahead. “We’ve never experienced this level of price increase for farm diesel fuel,” said Iowa farmer Chris Edgington, president of the National Corn Growers Association. Cost per gallon has climbed to US$4.70 from US$2.20 a year ago, he said. In the breadbasket nation of Ukraine, three months into Russia’s military invasion, growers are tending fields amid brutal bombings of storage sites. One grain farmer said he has enough fuel to last two months. He’s nervous about diesel supplies … [Read more...] about Diesel’s 100% surge and scarcity deny farmers their ‘lifeblood’
Malaysia’s biggest telcos seek majority stake in 5G agency
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia's four largest telecommunications firms are seeking a majority stake in a state 5G agency, countering a proposal by the government to offer them minority ownership, according to a letter sent by the firms to the finance ministry. Boeing tries to catch up to SpaceX after plenty of drama
New York (CNN Business) Boeing is the world's largest aerospace company, a primary US defense contractor, and a titan of a global aviation duopoly. A few years ago, the idea that it would dominate commercial space was a given, and companies like SpaceX, a relatively young business relying on a strategy of moving fast and breaking things, would take a back seat to the move level-headed and experienced Boeing. That, however, did not come to fruition. Errors, delays and failures beleaguered the spacecraft's development. There was a botched test flight, software issues, sticky valves and a lawsuit involving an executive at a subcontractor who is said to have lost his leg during a Starliner test. After initially giving SpaceX closer scrutiny than Boeing, officials later said they regretted that as many of Starliner's issues slipped through the cracks. SpaceX, Elon Musk's relatively new entrant into the spaceflight business, ultimately beat Boeing to the … [Read more...] about Boeing tries to catch up to SpaceX after plenty of drama
India grows fastest among major economies, Omicron risks seen
India grew at the fastest pace of any major economy in the July-September quarter but economists said disruptions from the emerging Omicron coronavirus variant risked slowing the recovery, especially given India's low vaccination rates. Asia's third-largest economy has rebounded strongly from last year's deep pandemic-induced slump, boosted by vaccinations and stronger government spending, economists said. But new COVID-19 variants, a global slowdown and rising manufacturing prices all pose risks to growth. Gross domestic product expanded 8.4% in the September quarter from a year earlier, statistics ministry data showed on Tuesday, in line with 8.4% growth predicted in a Reuters poll and compared with a 20.1% expansion in the previous quarter. "Data clearly shows that corporate income and profit are above the pre-pandemic level," K.V. Subramanian, chief economist at the finance ministry told reporters after the data release. He said double-digit growth was expected in the … [Read more...] about India grows fastest among major economies, Omicron risks seen
Your Essential Guide To Trentino: Italy’s Year-Round Natural Playground
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin When a part of the world is as dominated by mountains as Trentino in Italy’s glorious north undeniably is, it can be easy to forget there are four seasons in every year. Standing in late winter atop the tangle of ski runs that drape themselves conveniently across the precipitous slopes above the town of Madonna di Campiglio , casting an appreciative eye over a far-reaching blanket of crisp white snow ever so slightly yellowed by the drifting sands of the Sahara Desert blown in from afar on invisible winds, and shadowed by the towering peaks of the Dolomite mountains behind me and Alps in front, it’s hard to conceive how this would all look outside of winter’s icy grip. As my mind wanders and contemplates the awesomeness of the environment, my local mountain guide, Marco Maganzini, snaps me out of my reverie with another story of year-round derring do that unwittingly answers my question. The truth is, this place is a … [Read more...] about Your Essential Guide To Trentino: Italy’s Year-Round Natural Playground
