Global political and business leaders are gathering in the mountain resort of Davos in Switzerland this week for the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting. It starts on Tuesday 22 January, and will wrap up on Friday 25 January. What's on the agenda? 'Globalization 4.0: Shaping a Global Architecture in the Age of the Fourth Industrial Revolution' is the theme this year. According to the World Economic Forum's website, it picks up on two major trends — global cooperation challenges, and changes as a result of the high-tech digital revolution. Professor Klaus Schwab, Founder and Chief Executive of the World Economic Forum, explained: "This fourth wave of globalization needs to be human-centred, inclusive and sustainable. We are entering a period of profound global instability brought on by the technological disruption of the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the realignment of geo-economics and geopolitical forces. "We need principals from all stakeholder groups in Davos to … [Read more...] about World Economic Forum 2019: What to expect at this year’s Davos?
WASHINGTON - President Donald Trump has canceled his delegation's trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, next week due to the partial US government shutdown, according to a statement released by Press Secretary Sarah Sanders on Thursday. Trump, who attended last year's Davos event, had planned to go again this year but pulled out last week as he grapples with Democrats in Congress over funding for a wall on the border with Mexico that has led to a partial shutdown of the government. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo were expected to lead the U.S. delegation in Trump's place, two senior administration officials said this week. "Out of consideration for the 800,000 great American workers not receiving pay and to ensure his team can assist as needed, President Trump has canceled his delegation’s trip to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland," Sanders's statement said. Mnuchin and Pompeo had planned to speak jointly to the … [Read more...] about Trump cancels US delegation to World Economic Forum in Davos: press secretary
The world’s elite converge on Davos, Switzerland, next week for the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting. The Davos 2019 theme is “Globalization 4.0,” promoting more inclusive societies and better protections for vulnerable communities. It is perhaps an irony then that divisive domestic issues will prevent a number of major world leaders from attending this year. The biggest names in politics in business descend upon the snowy Swiss town of Davos next week for the World Economic Forum’s Annual Meeting. A huge snow dump might be wreaking havoc locally, but the event will aim to project a message of calm togetherness under the theme of “Globalization 4.0.” Put simply, the annual meeting will reflect on building more inclusive societies and introducing better protections for vulnerable communities. But that message could already be at risk of being overshadowed. US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron have cancelled … [Read more...] about Here are the major world leaders and royals going to Davos next week — and those staying at home
US President Donald Trump on Thursday before departing for the US-Mexico border as part of his all-out offensive to build a wall. Photo: AFP US president Donald Trump on Thursday announced he would be cancelling his visit to the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting in Davos because of "the Democrats intransigence" over his plans to build a wall along the US–Mexico border. “Because of the Democrats intransigence on Border Security and the great importance of Safety for our Nation, I am respectfully cancelling my very important trip to Davos, Switzerland for the World Economic Forum,” Trump tweeted. “My warmest regards and apologies to the @WEF!” he added. Trump is currently engaged in a stand-off with Democrats in the US congress over his demand for $5.7 billion in funding for the construction of a wall along the Mexican border designed to keep illegal immigrants out of the United States. That wall was a key promise made by Trump in his 2016 … [Read more...] about Trump cancels visit to WEF meeting in Davos
An anti-Trump rally was staged in Zurich in January 2018. Photo: AFP Authorities in the Swiss town of Davos have given the youth wing of Switzerland's Socialist Party permission to stage an anti-capitalist protest during US President Donald Trump's attendance at the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting later this month. Giving its reasons, the local government in the Alpine resort said it was important that people could exercise their right to protest and express their opinion, even during the WEF annual meeting, which is taking place from January 22nd to January 25th. But the decision represents a change of heart on the part of local authorities. Last year, a similar request by the Young Socialists to protest in the town during Trump’s controversial first WEF visit was turned down with city hall city saying there was "too much snow". The Young Socialists then went ahead and held a demonstration in Zurich instead. The protesters marched through … [Read more...] about Davos approves anti-Trump protest during WEF meeting
