Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Federal statutes in the U.S. Code and agency rules in the Code of Federal Regulations are easy to locate online. This is not the case , however, for the thousands of sub-regulatory guidance documents and “interpretative rules,” notices, bulletins, circulars, memoranda and so forth . But then again, these were never easy to locate offline either. Guidance documents are ostensibly non-binding, meant to inform or provide clarity, but guidance can be inapprorpriately leveraged to influence policy and public behavior, according to the Administrative Conference of the United States . This is a concern especially in presidential administrations inclined to deploy the “pen and phone,” as Obama did; or to “act without Congress,” as Biden’s spokespeople often declare he can do. So it was a good thing back in 2019 when Donald Trump issued “ Promoting the Rule of Law through Improved Agency Guidance Documents ” … [Read more...] about Good News On Red Tape? Alan Greenspan’s Genius at the Federal Reserve Was In Hiding How Little He Knew
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin It’s a bit of unreported on history that will eventually vanish, but back in 2005 Ben Bernanke went on a “listening” and “courting” tour. This thoroughgoing Keynesian who believed deeply that economic growth caused inflation, that government spending boosted growth, and most laughably, that “tight money” from the Fed brought on the 1930s, tried to refashion himself as a “Republican” economic thinker, whatever that means. Bernanke met with anyone on the Right who would meet with him, and who theoretically had juice. His motives were clear: he was on George W. Bush’s shortlist for Federal Reserve Chairman, at which point he was checking the various Right-wing boxes. He even had lunch with Cato co-founder and President Ed Crane. Crane was clear about his disdain for the Phillips Curve (see above), only for Bernanke to mutter something indecipherable about growth and inflation a la Alan Greenspan’s own inscrutable mutterings as Fed … [Read more...] about Alan Greenspan’s Genius at the Federal Reserve Was In Hiding How Little He Knew
Georgia Shows Contrasting Direction Of Federal & State Tax Burdens
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin While Congress is getting ready to raise federal taxes by hundreds of billions of dollars as part of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), it hasn’t gone unnoticed that lawmakers in many state capitals are doing the opposite, enacting tax relief. “Widespread tax breaks in the nation’s statehouses stands in contrast to what’s happening in Washington,” Bloomberg reported on August 9, adding that nearly “two dozen states slashed personal or corporate income-tax rates in the past two years and more than a dozen enacted temporary relief in 2022.” In addition to cutting income tax burdens, there has been a recent trend of states moving from progressive to flat personal income tax rates. Georgia was among the states where legislation was enacted in 2022 to go to a flat tax. The income tax cut signed into law by Governor Brian Kemp (R-Ga.) in April, which will move Georgia from a progressive income tax code with a top rate of 5.75% … [Read more...] about Georgia Shows Contrasting Direction Of Federal & State Tax Burdens
Federal Court Upholds The Right To Carry Cash
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The federal government can’t use “circumstantial evidence” to permanently confiscate nearly $70,000 in cash, a federal appeals court ruled on Wednesday. “While it may be dubious to drive around with a large amount of cash in one’s car,” Judge Julius Richardson wrote for the Fourth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, “it does not create an inescapable inference of criminal activity. Not using a bank does not necessarily make one a criminal.” After Dereck McClellan passed out in his car at a South Carolina gas station in January 2019, police searched the vehicle. Inside they found a blunt in the ashtray, an empty liquor bottle riding shotgun, and a duffle bag stuffed with cash in the trunk. Their search also revealed a bundle of cash in the console. All told, Dereck was carrying $69,940.50 in cash. That money, Dereck said, came from a retail business he was running with his girlfriend. Although Dereck was arrested for public … [Read more...] about Federal Court Upholds The Right To Carry Cash
Inflation Still High And Biden’s Policies Are Not Helping
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Inflation is up 8.5% since this time last year according to this morning’s CPI report . Economists expected the CPI to increase by 8.7% . Continued high inflation is lowering real earnings and undermining consumer confidence . The Federal Reserve has the biggest role to play in combatting high inflation, but better economic policies from President Biden and Congress would help. Inflation is fundamentally a problem of too much money chasing too few goods. The Federal Reserve controls the money supply, so it is ultimately responsible for the long-term path of inflation. Right now the economy is sending the Fed mixed signals: The latest jobs report shows the economy created 528,000 new jobs in July, but real GDP declined the last two quarters, which typically signals a recession. Labor productivity also fell each of the past two quarters, which is another sign of slower economic growth. The declines in real GDP … [Read more...] about Inflation Still High And Biden’s Policies Are Not Helping
MEF urges govt to delay enforcing Employment Act amendments, estimated to cost RM111 bil per year
- A + A KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 17): The Malaysian Employers Federation (MEF) has urged the government to delay implementing the amendments to the Employment Act 1995 from Sept 1, which it estimates will cost employers nationwide an extra RM110.99 billion per year. In a statement, the federation’s president Datuk Dr Syed Hussain Syed Husman said economic growth in the second half of this year is expected to slow to between 5% and 6%, compared with 8.9% reported in the second quarter. In light of the challenging economic situation ahead, the government should reconsider implementing the amendments, he added. “Employers should be given time to reconsolidate and recover their businesses which were severely impacted due to the movement control orders implemented in 2020 and 2021 to contain the menace of Covid-19,” he said. He added that some employers were already struggling to fully implement the new minimum wage of RM1,500 per month that took effect in May, which was … [Read more...] about MEF urges govt to delay enforcing Employment Act amendments, estimated to cost RM111 bil per year
Ringgit settles flat vs US dollar on Aug 17 as inflation fears cloud sentiment
- A + A KUALA LUMPUR (Aug 17): The ringgit ended flat against the US dollar on Wednesday (Aug 17), amid the possibility of the Federal Reserve (Fed) taking a significant interest rate adjustment to bring rising inflation under control. At 6pm, the local currency stood at 4.4660/4685 versus the greenback from Tuesday’s close of 4.4660/4680. The United States Commerce Department data showed construction of new homes hit 18-month lows in July. The data pointed out that new residential construction in the US fell 9.6% last month to 1.45 million, suggesting that the real estate market is struggling more than expected, and this could generate further inflation. A trader said this has further boosted the greenback’s safe-haven appeal, ahead of the release of the Fed’s July meeting minutes and US July retail sales data later on Wednesday that could give further clues about the pace of future interest rate hikes. He said Fed officials have signalled the need for more … [Read more...] about Ringgit settles flat vs US dollar on Aug 17 as inflation fears cloud sentiment

Dems’ Reconciliation Package Obscures Obamacare’s Failures With Taxpayer Cash
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin With fewer than 100 days until the midterms and President Biden's approval rating underwater, Democrats are desperate for a political win they can trumpet on the campaign trail. They're hoping the deceptively named Inflation Reduction Act is it. At the center of the bill is $64 billion in subsidies for health insurance purchased through Obamacare's exchanges. They're an extension of the subsidies created as part of the 2021 American Rescue Plan Act. They were supposed to expire at the end of this year—temporary measures to help households weather the economic impact of the pandemic. But if that happened, people would've received notices of massive premium hikes just before they headed to the polls. Hence, the Inflation Reduction Act's move to extend them for three more years, through 2025. It's a transparent ploy for votes. And it obscures just how much the Affordable Care Act has failed to live up to its name. … [Read more...] about Dems’ Reconciliation Package Obscures Obamacare’s Failures With Taxpayer Cash
New poll says people from Thailand more relaxed about Covid-19
A survey conducted by the Department of Health Service Support revealed that Thai people are not as vigilant as they once were about Covid-19 safety measures. The survey revealed that Thai people were about 4.3% more likely to engage in higher-risk activities than previously while there is an 11.06% decline in mask-wearing awareness. These results came from comparing the data from the first round of surveys conducted between March 5 to 31 with 113,847 respondents, and the latest round between July 1 to 20 with 28,487 respondents. The department believes the survey indicates Thai people are engaging in more physical contact due to relaxed social distancing and masking measures. Despite the latest findings, the Ministry of Public Health still encourages the general public to observe Covid safety protocol. Just over 771% of Thailand’s population has been fully vaccinated against coronavirus with two shots while about 45% have had at least one booster dose SOURCE: Thai News … [Read more...] about New poll says people from Thailand more relaxed about Covid-19
