Lahad Datu MP Mohamaddin announces leaving Bersatu

June 28, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A KOTA KINABALU (June 28): Lahad Datu Member of Parliament (MP) Datuk Mohamaddin Ketapi, who is also the Segama state assemblyman, on Tuesday (June 28) announced quitting Bersatu, which he joined after leaving Parti Warisan last year. Mohamaddin said he left Bersatu because he was not given the role and trust to strengthen the party, especially at the grassroots level in the Lahad Datu parliamentary constituency and Segama state constituency, despite being in the party for six months. He said he would continue to serve as a parliamentary member and an assemblyman, as well as support the federal and state governments as an independent elected representative. "After more than six months in Bersatu, I was not given any role. I am not disappointed on the thought that Bersatu is already strong in Lahad Datu and Segama. As such, there is no need for me to stay long in the party," he told a press conference here on Tuesday. On Oct 30 last year, Mohamaddin … [Read more...] about Lahad Datu MP Mohamaddin announces leaving Bersatu

Opinion: The aftershocks of America’s abortion earthquake will be felt for decades

June 27, 2022 by edition.cnn.com

(CNN) Following the US Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, CNN Opinion asked a group of contributors to weigh in on the cultural, legal and political ramifications of this monumental legal opinion undoing nearly 50 years of federal abortion protection. The views expressed in these commentaries are those of the authors. SE Cupp: What politicians get wrong about the abortion debate I'm deeply worried for our country. Read More No matter where you stand on the issue -- I'm pro-life but do not support a ban on abortions -- this ruling represents a seismic shift in American life as most of us knew it. I'm 43, and Roe is older than I am. There are more people alive today who have never known an America without Roe than there are people who lived without it. Stripping away what many women have only known as a right for nearly 50 years, without putting anything in its place is dangerous. Why Finland Is So Happy (and the U.S. Is So Depressed)

December 13, 2019 by www.inc.com

For the past two years, the United Nations has ranked Finland as the world's happiest country. The U.S. has never scored in the top 10 since the index was launched in 2011, and in 2019 it plummeted to 19th. While Finland seems perennially chirpy, the U.S. is seeing growing rates of depression, drug addiction, and suicide . Here are six reasons that residents of Finland (7.1 percent of whom are immigrants, BTW) are so happy when compared with their American counterparts: 1. Finns pay higher taxes but see more results. According to the conservative think tank the Brookings Institute, Finland collects 44 percent of its gross domestic product (GDP) in taxes versus the 26 percent of GDP that the U.S. collected in 2015. (For comparison, Denmark collects 46 percent and Mexico 17 percent.) So taxes are relatively high in Finland, which you'd think would tend to reduce overall happiness. However, higher taxes don't seem to bother the Finns, for two reasons: … [Read more...] about Why Finland Is So Happy (and the U.S. Is So Depressed)

After Wimbledon, Novak Djokovic Might Not Play Another Major Until The 2023 French Open

June 27, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Novak Djokovic is especially motivated to win his fourth straight Wimbledon title and 21st Grand Slam singles crown in part because he knows it will probably be a while before he plays in another major. The 35-year-old Serb expects to miss the U.S. Open later this summer because he’s unvaccinated against Covid-19 and thus cannot travel to the U.S. as a foreigner, and he faces a three-year ban from the Australian Open after having been deported ahead of the tournament in January, although that ban could end early. “The crazy thought is that he might not be in a major after this one until the French next year because he potentially got his visa revoked for three years in Australia, [he’s] not in the [U.S.] Open,” ESPN tennis analyst Brad Gilbert said on air after Djokovic advanced over South Korea’s Kwon Soon Woo in four sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to reach the second round at Wimbledon. “I mean, it’s a lot to have … [Read more...] about After Wimbledon, Novak Djokovic Might Not Play Another Major Until The 2023 French Open

You don’t need to water your plants every day, just thoroughly

June 27, 2022 by www.thestar.com.my

It might not feel like you can "waste" water that you give to your plants, but there are more efficient and less efficient ways to water them. Watering plants on hot days can also harm them if you do it wrong. Here's what you need to know. Watering your plants regularly, particularly during the hot summer months, is essential, not just for those on your balcony but for flower beds and vegetable patches as well. If you are one of those people tired of lugging watering cans around, however, you will be delighted to hear that most of us tend to water our plants too often. Knowing how to do it right doesn't only benefit your plants, it also helps to minimize waste of water, a resource that's only going to become more scarce as global warming proceeds. As a general rule, instead of watering your tomatoes, rose bushes and geraniums a little every day, you should water them more heavily occasionally. Plants adapt to the frequency with which they receive water, with weeds, for … [Read more...] about You don’t need to water your plants every day, just thoroughly

Daily Voice | More correction likely as these four risk factors not priced in yet, says Dhananjay Sinha of JM Financial

June 27, 2022 by www.moneycontrol.com

"It will be early to assume that the full impact of headwinds (that confront the global and Indian economy currently) are priced in," says Dhananjay Sinha, Managing Director and Head Strategist and Economist - Equity Research at JM Financial Institutional Securities. Gauging the markets using this monitor, JM Financial sees that 30-35 percent of the characteristics of past capitulation are visible as of now, leaving further scope for adjustments. Hence they expect commodity prices to correct further and crude would be the last to collapse, giving rise to a scenario of market capitulation. Thus, the markets may still be afar from a deep value situation, Sinha shares in an interview with Moneycontrol . Excerpts from the interview: Do you think the market fully priced in all these risk factors? Do you see any other risk that the market hasn't factored in yet? While it is true that the market now knows the various risks that confront the global and Indian economy, it will … [Read more...] about Daily Voice | More correction likely as these four risk factors not priced in yet, says Dhananjay Sinha of JM Financial

US manufacturing shows resilience despite rising interest rates

June 28, 2022 by www.theedgemarkets.com

- A + A WASHINGTON (June 27): New orders for US-made capital goods and shipments increased solidly in May, pointing to sustained strength in business spending on equipment in the second quarter, but rising interest rates and tighter financial conditions could slow momentum. The nearly broad rise in orders reported by the Commerce Department on Monday occurred despite deteriorating business and consumer sentiment, as well as heightened fears of a recession. The gains partly reflected higher prices. The Federal Reserve is aggressively tightening monetary policy to quell inflation. "There's some inflation behind the increase in orders, but, nevertheless, there are a lot of dollars flowing through the economy right now," said Christopher Rupkey, chief economist at FWDBONDS in New York. "Businesses would not order new equipment if they thought consumers and other companies were looking to pull back their purchases." Orders for non-defense capital goods excluding … [Read more...] about US manufacturing shows resilience despite rising interest rates

Abortions Can Resume In Louisiana—At Least For Now—As Trigger Bans Blocked In State Court

June 27, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline A Louisiana court granted a request by abortion providers to temporarily block trigger bans that outlawed the procedure in the state Monday, as pro-choice advocates try to claw back access to abortion after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and a series of states immediately banned it. Key Facts Louisiana state Judge Robin M. Giarusso signed a temporary restraining order blocking Louisiana’s trigger laws, which took effect Friday and outlawed all abortions in the state, while the abortion providers’ challenge is heard. Giarusso scheduled a hearing for July 8 on whether to grant the abortion providers’ request for a preliminary injunction that would keep the laws blocked or put them back in effect. Abortion providers and advocates filed a lawsuit in state court against Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry and state Health Secretary Courtney Phillips that argues the state’s abortion … [Read more...] about Abortions Can Resume In Louisiana—At Least For Now—As Trigger Bans Blocked In State Court
