A man has been arrested for pretending to have connections with Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon in a bid to win recruitment commissions from job seekers. Crime Suppression Division chief Pol Maj Montri Khetkhan said yesterday that Pongrawee Thiabsing, 35, was arrested on Tuesday for defrauding people at a village in Nakhon Pathom's Sam Pran district. He said several victims filed charges with police after Mr Pongrawee told them he worked on a team under Gen Prawit at Government House. He claimed he could land them a job there as Gen Prawit's secretary. He charged each victim over 100,000 baht. Mr Pongrawee's Facebook gallery showed him in an office of Seksakol Atthawong, a former aide to the prime minister, wearing what looks like a uniform. One victim lost over 300,000 baht before cottoning on to the scam. COVID-19 second wave: 7.5 million jobs lost; here’s which sector was hit badly
The second wave of COVID-19 has taken a heavy toll on employment as restrictions to control the second wave of the pandemic has crippled businesses. About 7.5 million jobs have been lost across sectors in February-May 2021, data compiled by Moneycontrol based on estimates of hiring consultants showed. This is the worst-ever loss of jobs in India since liberalisation. The 2007-2009 financial crisis had a relatively smaller impact, with about 5 million jobs lost. Jobs were lost across sectors such as travel/tourism and hospitality, which rely on people movement to sustain business, as well as startups and financial services. A recent report by Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) showed double-digit unemployment rate in April and May. Unemployment rate touched 14.5 percent in the week ended May 16, 2021 and rose further to 14.7 percent in the following week. [YONHAP] Payrolls of listed Korean companies are still lower than before the pandemic, although some reported a recovery, a survey showed. According to a survey by the Federation of Korean Industries released Tuesday, 808 companies listed on the Kospi and Kosdaq said their number of employees last year was less than a year earlier. That’s 43.1 percent of the 1,874 companies listed on the two local stock markets. The survey did not include financial companies. Of the 696 Kospi-traded companies that were surveyed, 42.2 percent or 294 companies said that their employees were fewer than a year earlier. Of the 1,178 Kosdaq-trade companies, 43.6 percent or 514 said the same. The results were an improvement from 2020 when 52 percent of companies said they saw their number of employees shrink on-year. Mohamad Salleh and the nine others are accused of misappropriating RM118 million from a RM250 million loan granted to NFCorp by the government in December 2007 to set up and operate a national feedlot centre in Gemas, Negeri Sembilan. The government is seeking from the accused RM253.62 million, which includes accrued annual interest of 2% from May 1, 2019. On Jan 25 this year, High Court judge Anand Ponnudurai had given the parties until May 17 to reach a settlement or continue with the civil suit before him. Willie Walsh - A + A KUALA LUMPUR (May 17): The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has said the delay in the aviation recovery in the Asia-Pacific region is because of governments' Covid-19 travel restrictions. The IATA also specified that the main gaps are China's zero-Covid approach and Japan's still unclear plan on the reopening of its borders. In a statement on Tuesday (May 17), IATA said the Asia-Pacific region's international passenger traffic largely hovered at below 10% for the past two years and stated that the demand in March merely reached 17% of pre-Covid-19 levels. "This is far below the global trend where markets have recovered to 60% of pre-crisis levels. The lag is because of government restrictions," IATA's director general Willie Walsh said. Draft budget bill gets govt nod
The cabinet yesterday approved a draft budget bill for the 2023 fiscal year worth 3.1 trillion baht and gave the green light for the formation of a 64-member parliamentary committee to vet it. According to a Government House source, the draft budget bill is scheduled to go to parliament for its first reading May 31 to June 2. The bill will require two more readings around August before being sent for Senate and royal approval. Government spokesman Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana said the draft budget expenditure bill is split into six principal expenses. There would be 590 billion baht for expenses arising from the central fund and 1.09 trillion baht for state agencies. There will be 218 billion baht for integration costs incurred by state agencies and 772 billion baht for manpower expenses. The last two were 206 billion baht for revolving funds and 306 billion baht for paying off state sector debts.
