Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Now that travel has roared back to pre-pandemic levels, travelers are spanning the globe for new experiences. As a major force in facilitating that travel, American Express regularly conducts surveys to see how, where and why its cardholders are exploring. The results of American Express Travel’s 2023 Global Travel Trends Report were released yesterday, detailing findings from 8,000 respondents from around the world: 2,000 in the U.S., 1,000 each in Australia, Canada, India, Japan, Mexico and the U.K. all with a household income of $70,000+ and who travel by air at least once a year. Mapped: New Survey Shows Air Pollution Changes In Cities Around The World

March 17, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Air pollution is a serious matter. Who wants to visit a city only to end up walking its streets breathing acrid smells and harming your health? But air pollution doesn’t just mean the smog we can see – the really dangerous stuff is invisible to the naked eye. A 2022 report by the World Health Organization cites that 99% of the entire global population is breathing polluted, health-harming air. And with more than 6,000 cities across 117 countries now monitoring air quality, the data set is comprehensive and compelling. To try and clarify that into something usable, the air experts at HouseFresh have mapped 480 cities around the world, calculating the average air pollution level of the first nine months of 2019 against the first nine months of 2022 to see where air pollution has increased and where it has decreased. Using aqicn.org’s World Air Quality Index data for each city, they measured average levels of particulate … [Read more...] about Mapped: New Survey Shows Air Pollution Changes In Cities Around The World

One More Lap Around the Pylons -The Last Reno Air Races Are This Fall

March 22, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin At the end of the annual Reno National Championship Air Races this September, a 60-year tradition of closed-course pylon air racing will end in northern Nevada and with it an invaluable piece of American tradition. The hope is that air racing may carry on elsewhere but it’s a tough ask. A fortnight ago, the Reno Air Racing Association (RARA) announced that 2023 will be the final year that the Reno-Stead Airport (north of the City of Reno) will host the National Championship Air Races from September 13-17. The end of the six-decade event came with a decision by the Reno Tahoe Airport Authority ( RTAA ) - which runs Reno-Stead Airport where the Races have been held since 1964 - not to renew a contract with RARA to hold the event based on concerns including “rapid area development, public safety and the impact on the Reno-Stead Airport and its surrounding areas.” “They gave a variety of reasons,” RARA COO, Tony … [Read more...] about One More Lap Around the Pylons -The Last Reno Air Races Are This Fall

Passenger dies of heart attack on flight from India to Bangkok

March 20, 2023 by thethaiger.com

An IndiGo flight bound for Bangkok from Mumbai was diverted to Myanmar yesterday after a passenger died on board. According to a Times of India report, the unnamed passenger suffered a heart attack less than an hour after the flight took off at 4pm from Mumbai. Despite efforts to assist the man, he tragically passed away and the flight was diverted to an airport in Myanmar. This incident occurred just days after another IndiGo flight, en route from Ranchi to Pune, was diverted to Nagpur due to a medical emergency on board. Unfortunately, the passenger in question also did not survive. In a separate incident just a week earlier, a Delhi to Doha IndiGo flight was forced to make an emergency landing in Karachi, Pakistan, due to a medical emergency involving a Nigerian national in his sixties. Despite medical assistance provided at the airport, the passenger passed away and the flight was delayed for around five hours before being allowed to return to Delhi. It is not … [Read more...] about Passenger dies of heart attack on flight from India to Bangkok

The American Cricketer Starring In India’s Lucrative Women’s Premier League

March 16, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Hustling batters with her menacing left-arm seam bowling, American Tara Norris has been a breakout player at the lucrative Women's Premier League in India. And her spectacular performances, in a momentous competition hoped to inspire females globally, could well prove an important moment for U.S. cricket amid a decisive juncture for the sport in the world's biggest sports market. The 24-year-old created history when she claimed the first five-wicket haul in the WPL after tearing through the Royal Challengers Bangalore line-up to start the tournament in spectacular fashion. While she hasn't maintained those heady heights, Norris has been one of the success stories after being the only Associate cricketer - players not from the 12 countries with exclusive Full Membership - bought in the WPL auction. Norris was able to play due to WPL rules allowing teams a fifth overseas player if one came from the Associates. … [Read more...] about The American Cricketer Starring In India’s Lucrative Women’s Premier League

Preparing Economies And Societies For Extreme Heat

March 21, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin By Daniel Murphy, Risk and Resilience Specialist, World Economic Forum Much of the world kicked off 2023 with a series of meteorological anomalies - longstanding temperature records were broken by large margins in Europe, North America, the Arctic and Africa. Eight countries experienced their warmest January on record. Normally bustling ski resorts have been deserted in Switzerland this winter, because of a lack of snow; pollen warnings have been issued in Prague, due to early blooming plants; and Italian agricultural yields plummeted as a result of drought, fueled by a lack of snowmelt. In much of the US, the winter has thus far been unrecognizable. Seven northeastern states, including New York, Massachusetts and New Jersey, experienced their warmest Januarys on record. Iconic images of a New York City blanketed in snow have been far from reality this year, as the city hit a new record for the longest stretch without … [Read more...] about Preparing Economies And Societies For Extreme Heat

The Rubicon Crossed: The Energy World Turned Upside Down After The Ukraine War

March 23, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin 49 BCE Julius Caesar crossed the Rubicon river with the 13th Legion, a defiant act that signalled the start of the Roman Civil War. The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant on 17 th March against Vladimir Putin, leader of the world’s largest energy exporter (Russia), accusing him of the war crime of illegally deporting hundreds of children from Ukraine. Five days later, China’s President Xi Jinping – recently confirmed for an unprecedented third term — said he was ready to 'stand guard over a world order based on international law' as he met President Putin in Moscow. “International law” seems to have different interpretations, and the ICC evidently does not have a monopoly on what passes as international law in the concert of nations. According to Wikipedia , the ICC is an international tribunal seated in The Hague, Netherlands with over 100 countries having ratified the Rome Statute, … [Read more...] about The Rubicon Crossed: The Energy World Turned Upside Down After The Ukraine War

GORDON CHANG: We Ignore China’s War Warnings At Our Own Peril

March 13, 2023 by dailycaller.com

“If the U.S. doesn’t hit the brakes and continues to barrel down the wrong track,” China’s Foreign Minister Qin Gang said on March 7, “no amount of guardrails can prevent the carriage from derailing and crashing, and there will surely be conflict and confrontation.” He also spoke of “catastrophic consequences.” The unusually pointed warning followed that of Chinese ruler Xi Jinping of the day before. “Western countries, led by the U.S., are implementing all-round containment, encirclement, and suppression against us,” he told the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference in Beijing. These comments suggest a marked deterioration in relations between Washington and Beijing. What is happening? (RELATED: SHOSHANA BRYEN: The Biden Admin’s Two-Faced Israel Policy) “We have to not rule out the stratagem of empty fortress,” tweeted City University of New York’s Ming Xia, one of America’s most astute China watchers, on March 8. ‘That’s Just Not True’: GOP Senator Slams Military Officials For Blaming ‘Discrimination’ For Recruiting Problems

March 22, 2023 by dailycaller.com

Military officials relied on a survey finding that fear of being discriminated against was a top reason for low propensity to join the military to explain the military’s ongoing recruiting problems in a hearing Wednesday. The Department of Defense has focused efforts in recent years to promote diversity, equity and inclusion in the force. Those efforts “suggest to the American people that the military has a problem with diversity and extremism,” Republican Missouri Sen. Roger Wicker said at the hearing. Republican Missouri Sen. Roger Wicker denied at a hearing Wednesday that discrimination is a problem in the military after service leaders relied on a study that found fears of discrimination factored into young people’s hesitance to serve. The Army conducted a survey of more than 2,000 individuals from the ages of 16 to 28 in the summer of 2022 aimed at uprooting the main reasons only 9% of young people express interest in military service, a historic low, according to … [Read more...] about ‘That’s Just Not True’: GOP Senator Slams Military Officials For Blaming ‘Discrimination’ For Recruiting Problems
