Thailand will not starve, says Commerce Minister

May 26, 2022 by thethaiger.com

Deputy PM, and Commerce Minister, Jurin Laksanawisit, yesterday moved to ease fears of food shortages in Thailand on the back of recent protectionism measures introduced by neighbouring countries, export bans, and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict threatening to worsen world food supplies. Jurin declared Thailand has an “abundance of food” produce and there will be no shortages despite the recent embargos. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the THAIFEX-Anuga Asia 2022 exhibition, the 66 year old government minister was bullish about the kingdom’s import-export future and says the nation can take advantage of the recent uncertainty and promote Thailand as a global hub of quality agricultural products and food, which will help to increase food-related shipments. The Malaysia government this week revealed it is banning the export of all poultry from the country. Indonesia recently banned palm oil exports, India restricted wheat and sugar exports to prevent a surge in domestic … [Read more...] about Thailand will not starve, says Commerce Minister

(Reuters) The world’s food problem is already severe as prices jump and protectionism flares but, a food security expert says there’s a good chance governments can stop it from getting way worse if they heed a lesson from the crisis in 2008: don’t panic. With a gauge of global prices already at a record following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, a spate of nations have moved to curb exports in crops from wheat and sugar to cooking oils, exacerbating security risks for the rest of the world. Bad weather is a concern, too. Still, while wheat, corn and soy have soared, rice, a staple for more than 3 billion people, has so far been more stable. If nations do not panic or start hoarding, they can stop the current crisis from becoming a rerun of the one in 2008, when rice prices soared to put the region’s food security at serious risk, according to Peter Timmer, Professor Emeritus at … [Read more...] about Food crisis can be contained if Asia remembers not to panic: expert

China’s ‘Zero Covid’ Mess + Ukraine Crisis = Global Recession

May 26, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The global economy arguably has no better early-warning system than Singapore. Its highly open economy is on the front lines of zigs and zags of high-tech export sectors that are susceptible to sudden demand shifts. And at the moment, this microcosm of global growth patterns is signaling trouble ahead. On Wednesday, government officials warned Singapore’s output will be expanding at the lower end of its 3% to 5% range . The Ministry of Trade & Industry didn’t specify a particular nation in saying the external demand outlook “has weakened compared to three months ago.” But China is written between the lines. So is the inflationary fallout from Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine. These two giant headwinds have the International Institute of Finance warning investors not to downplay “elevated global recession risk” that’s intensifying by the day. Beijing’s “zero Covid” absolutism is slamming Asia’s biggest … [Read more...] about China’s ‘Zero Covid’ Mess + Ukraine Crisis = Global Recession
