“We would turn to Will and ask, ‘How feasible is this and, if it isn’t, how do we justify it from a technical or scientific basis?'” DeMarle later told Fast Company. “What was most amazing to me was that Will’s response was usually akin to: ‘Oh, researchers at such-and-such a university or company are already working on projects similar to that.’ He would then provide us with enough scientific and technical information so we could turn around and describe, in a very technical way, how each mechanical augmentation works. So you might say that every augmentation in the game has some basis in reality–even the most far-fetched ones!” … [Read more...] about How Real Science Shaped Game “Deus Ex”‘s Tech Magic

Biden picked an ex-VC to run Commerce. Her ties to tech might be too close
Finally, Raimondo could have some influence over the Biden Administration’s posture on tech antitrust issues. The government has now filed major antitrust cases against Google in October and Facebook in December, and all of the “big four,” including Apple and Amazon, face antitrust investigations at the state or federal levels, or both. There is lots of interest on the Democratic side to pursue these cases, and to move to limit the unchecked power of major tech companies through sweeping new regulation. … [Read more...] about Biden picked an ex-VC to run Commerce. It’s good that there are less non-critical emergency visits, but bad if people who really need the ER are avoiding it because of fear of the virus. … [Read more...] about It’s time to fully embrace telehealth—for the COVID-19 crisis and beyond

“The way people consume digital media is changing and we need to change with it,“ says Fischer. “It’s not only about new business models, but new ways to make and play games, as well as new players. There are people playing games on Facebook who never touched a videogame before. I can treat these like pilot episodes of TV series. I can do an initial episode or smaller version of the game and, based on its success, come out with another iteration or larger scale piece on a step-by-step basis.“ … [Read more...] about Square Enix: A Tale Of Two Gaming Cultures
