Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin When Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader meet in A New Hope , the resulting battle was the first time the Star Wars creative team had ever depicted a lightsaber duel. The duel is notably restrained, less fluid and flashy than later lightsaber battles in the franchise. As a result, some fans view it as a weak point of the film, expressing frustration with the technical limitations that hamper the fight between two fan-favorites - a much more heightened remake of the scene exists online , a glossy piece of fan fiction. However, the New Hope duel is not nearly as underwhelming as some make it out to be; it’s as much about the conversation as it is the lightsabers. The simple exchange between the two tells the viewer everything we need to know about their history, their clash of values, while the duel itself feels tense, and painstakingly cautious. It is a clash between two old masters who are both restraining … [Read more...] about ‘Kenobi’ Finale Delivered The Duel ‘Star Wars’ Fans Wanted

Rolex worn during World War II ‘Great Escape’ sells for $1,89,000 in New York
The Rolex Stainless steel chronograph wristwatch, ref. 3525, “Monoblocco” worn by RAF Lt. Gerald Imeson is displayed at Christie’s New York. A Rolex watch worn by a British prisoner during the real-life "Great Escape" from the Nazi Stalag Luft III prisoner-of-war camp sold for $189,000 on Thursday in New York. The final sum for the timepiece, sold to an anonymous buyer, was less than the $200,000 and $400,000 expected by Christie's. The watch was worn by Gerald Imeson on the night of March 24, 1944, when a group of Allied soldiers undertook the daring escape that inspired the 1963 movie starring Steve McQueen. Imeson had ordered the watch from Rolex in Switzerland, who shipped it via the Red Cross to the prison camp near the present-day Polish town of Zagan, Christie's said. The steel watch with a black luminous dial and hands was "instrumental in the planning and execution" of their bid for freedom, the auction house added. Close Christie's said it … [Read more...] about Rolex worn during World War II ‘Great Escape’ sells for $1,89,000 in New York
Season 2 Of ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Could Tell A Better Story With Reva, The Third Sister
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Obi-Wan Kenobi was always intended to be a miniseries, but the stars of the show have confirmed that they would happily return for a second season; Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy has even hinted that season 2 could happen, if the fans want it. While the series proved surprisingly uneven at times, the big confrontation between Obi-Wan and Darth Vader in the finale really resonated with fans, as a solid resolution to the relationship fleshed out by the prequels. However, when it comes to a potential second season of Obi-Wan Kenobi , there isn’t much story left to tell - surely, Vader can’t meet Obi-Wan again (although, the idea of the two constantly bumping into one another, engaging in non-consequential duels in the years preceding A New Hope is pretty funny). But Reva, the Third Sister, is still alive, and her story was left open-ended after the finale of Kenobi - might she make a good companion, … [Read more...] about Season 2 Of ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ Could Tell A Better Story With Reva, The Third Sister
Friday Box Office: ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Tops $500 Million, ‘Lightyear’ Plunges 74%
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Even if Top Gun: Maverick ends up just below Elvis atop the domestic box office in its fifth weekend, it won’t be for a lack of trying. Paramount and Skydance’s $170 million action drama earned another $8.25 million on its fifth Friday, dropping 26% from last Friday for a new $499.472 million domestic cume. Tom Cruise’s legacy sequel is passing $500 million domestic by the end of this sentence. It’s looking like a $30.1 million fifth-weekend gross for the Joseph Kosinski-directed flick, which would be A) a drop of just 33% and B) the second or third-biggest fifth-weekend gross alongside Titanic ($30.1 million) and Avatar ($42 million). That brings its domestic cume to $521 million by Sunday night. Presuming a continued 53/47 domestic/overseas split and a thus-far solid opening weekend in South Korea, Top Gun: Maverick should end tomorrow night just over/under the $1 billion mark in global grosses. Among domestic … [Read more...] about Friday Box Office: ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Tops $500 Million, ‘Lightyear’ Plunges 74%
Box Office: Tom Cruise’s ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Passes $900 Million Worldwide
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Paramount has announced that Skydance’s Top Gun: Maverick has crossed $900 million at the global box office. It has earned $474.76 million domestic and $427.1 million overseas (without a penny from China, Russia or the Ukraine) for a $901.9 million global cume. That’s just 25 days in global theatrical release, which means that Tom Cruise’s insistence in a 120-day theatrical window is obviously paying off. We’ll see if the last two Mission: Impossible films (in summer 2023 and Fall 2024) are given similar treatment, but Cruise certainly has the high ground in terms of theatrical exclusivity. Oh, and the film will today or tomorrow pass China’s The Battle at Lake Changjin ($911 million) to become the third biggest Covid-era grosser behind Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness ($945 million) and Spider-Man: No Way Home ($1.91 billion). It has Tom Cruise’s biggest opening weekend ($160.5 million domestic and … [Read more...] about Box Office: Tom Cruise’s ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Passes $900 Million Worldwide
CREATING CONTENT FOR ALTERNATIVE DIGITAL MEDIA
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Most producers focus on producing content for full-length films or television series, which creates a glut of producers (supply) compared to potential distributors of that content (demand). This imbalance leads to inevitable results under the law of supply and demand, putting producers at a distinct disadvantage. Given the bourgeoning means of distribution in this digital age, producers would gain an advantage if they focused on creating content for alternative platforms. I routinely hear from budding producers with grand plans for the next “Star Wars” franchise before they get their feet wet with smaller projects, which is just not going to happen. If they gained traction and credibility by proving their chops by producing content for alternative platforms, they would have more leverage in later creating film and TV content if that is their desire. One way to gain traction is to create shorts that can be shown on social … [Read more...] about CREATING CONTENT FOR ALTERNATIVE DIGITAL MEDIA

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Parker Conrad, ex-Zenefits, is now worth $2.2 billion thanks to the success of his new HR software startup Rippling. His cofounder is also a billionaire. S ix years after his first HR startup Zenefits blew up, Parker Conrad’s redemption is complete. He’s now a billionaire–with a net worth of $2.2 billion, by Forbes estimates–in the wake of his new HR startup Rippling’s lofty valuation of $11.25 billion. Back in February 2016, Conrad had resigned under pressure from Zenefits, while the former unicorn retrenched and slashed its valuation by more than half under new leadership. But by April that year–after spending time at home, depressed and binge-watching Star Wars movies while the Securities and Exchange Commission and state insurance commissioners opened investigations into his former startup–he was back with a new HR software startup, Rippling. He was filled with ideas for how to do things better this … [Read more...] about Fallen Unicorn CEO Is Now A Billionaire
Landed properties worth RM500mil left abandoned
GEORGE TOWN: Landed properties valued at more than RM500mil are rotting in space-scarce Penang island, where residential and commercial buildings fetch lucrative prices. A shock ran through the sporting world last week when a group led by Walmart heir Rob Walton won the bidding war for the Denver Broncos NFL team with a $4.65 billion offer . The link between marketing and influence has always been inextricable. After all, a chief marketer’s job is about nothing more than it is the influencing of attitudes and behaviors in … [Read more...] about The Forbes World’s Most Influential CMOs List: 2022
