But the preparations for the event must go on and the search is open for volunteers from around the world, ages 18 and older, who speak English or French and want to work behind the scenes during the Olympics or Paralympics. Although most of the volunteers are needed in Paris, there are some 5,000 openings for other Games venues in Bordeaux, Nantes, Marseille, Nice, Saint-Etienne, Lyon, Lille and Châteauroux. Putting The 2022 Stock Market Decline In Perspective

March 27, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Jonathan Dash is founder of Dash Investments . As CIO, he is responsible for the firm’s Investment Management and Asset Allocation decisions. Last year's stock market performance was not what anyone would have wanted, but it was to be expected. For those keeping score, it was the largest yearly decline since 2008 . That could be catastrophic for someone who initially invested in January 2022 with just a one-year time horizon. But most investors don't invest for a one-year period. They invest with their sights set on a long-term goal 10, 20 or 30 years out. But even for someone who started investing just three years ago, their average annual return at the end of 2022 would have been 8.22% . For someone who began five years ago, their average annual return would have been 9.11% . A 10-year horizon ending in 2022 would have generated a 12.4% average annual return. You see where I'm going with this. In a … [Read more...] about Putting The 2022 Stock Market Decline In Perspective

How, When And Where To See A Rare Conjunction Of Venus And Uranus After Sunset This Week

March 27, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Next week the brightest planet and the seventh planet from the sun will appear very close to each other in the post-sunset night sky. Venus has been rising into the twilight sky since December 2022 and is now about 36º above the southwest horizon as soon as it gets dark, as seen from the northern hemisphere. That’s about as high as it ever reaches. Uranus—on its slow 88 Earth-years orbit of the Sun—doesn’t appear to move much in our night sky, but nor is it anyone near as bright and easy to see as dazzling Venus. What happens this week is mostly about Venus moving quickly through our night sky to visually “catch-up” on Uranus. Here’s everything you need to know to see this week’s rare conjunction of Venus and Uranus: MORE FROM FORBES See the Hubble Telescope's Jaw-Dropping New Portraits Of Jupiter And Uranus By Jamie Carter When is the conjunction of Venus and Uranus? U.S. Regulator Says That Binance Illegally Helped Americans Trade On Its Exchange

March 27, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) today issued a complaint against Binance, the largest crypto exchange in the world, alleging that the firm put profits over compliance and committed “numerous violations of the Commodity Exchange Act (CEA) and CFTC regulations.” Also mentioned were Changpeng Zhao, the Binance founder and CEO, and former Chief Compliance Officer Samuel Lim, who is cited widely throughout the complaint and allegedly orchestrated much of the malfeasance. Today’s filing is the latest in a series of questionable behaviors by the company. However, while the CFTC is seeking disgorgement of profits, civil monetary penalties, registration bans and a permanent injunction against violations of the CEA and CFTC regulations, the long-term impact of this filing is unclear. Specifically the document, filed today in the federal courthouse in Chicago, alleges that the company offered crypto derivatives, … [Read more...] about U.S. Regulator Says That Binance Illegally Helped Americans Trade On Its Exchange

World’s Largest Crypto Exchange Sued By US Regulators

March 27, 2023 by dailycaller.com

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) sued Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, and its CEO Changpeng Zhao on Monday for allegedly breaking trading and derivatives rules. The derivatives regulator said Binance neglected its responsibility to properly register with the CFTC, according to the filing. The agency has been investigating Binance since at least 2021 over whether it has allowed Americans to trade crypto derivatives, as the CFTC rules typically obligate companies to register if they do. Binance allegedly guided American customers to avoid compliance measures by using VPNs (virtual private networks) and other methods, according to the filing. The firm also allegedly hid the fact that they had American customers in their internal documents and data. While Binance.US launched in 2019, Binance.com is illegal for Americans to use, which is why it is only accessible through VPN. Binance.US is more limited than Binance.com, with roughly 150 … [Read more...] about World’s Largest Crypto Exchange Sued By US Regulators

Party as Samoa loses Friday in time zone jump

December 31, 2011 by newsinfo.inquirer.net

APIA–Samoans celebrated in the streets at midnight Thursday when, with a song, a prayer and the ringing of bells, they wiped Friday off the calendar this week in a historic leap across the dateline. The midnight switch from Thursday, December 29 to Saturday, December 31 brought the Pacific island nation in line with its main trading partners Australia and New Zealand who had been a day ahead. People crowded into the capital Apia to be photographed near the town clock on the stroke of midnight as the seamless transition across the dateline went without a hitch. “Tonight is a momentous and noteworthy occasion that will be documented and recorded in the history of Samoa,” Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi said a speech marking the change. He said alignment with Australia and New Zealand could only benefit Samoa, allowing direct trade five days a week with the regional powerhouses which are also home to large expatriate Samoan communities. As the bells chimed on the … [Read more...] about Party as Samoa loses Friday in time zone jump

Bonus Clauses In Contracts Give MVP Contenders Even More Incentive

March 27, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin For baseball players with incentive clauses in their contracts, there’s a potential pot of gold at the end of every season – even if their teams don’t qualify for hefty World Series shares. A prime example is Bryce Harper, who has won National League MVP awards with both the Washington Nationals (2019) and Philadelphia Phillies (2021). Harper, who signed a 13-year, $330 million pact with the Phils at the start of 2019 spring training, gets a $500,000 bonus for winning the MVP trophy, $100,000 if he’s World Series MVP, and $50,000 each if he wins a Gold Glove, Silver Slugger, or League Championship Series MVP or if he makes the All-Star team. There are no escape clauses in the Harper contract, which carries him through 2032, when he’ll be 39. And, after reaching the World Series with the wild-card Phillies last fall, he hardly needs incentives to try again. Sidelined after elbow surgery, Harper expects to return … [Read more...] about Bonus Clauses In Contracts Give MVP Contenders Even More Incentive

Wyndham Hotels Grabs A Windfall From America’s Infrastructure Agenda

March 27, 2023 by www.forbes.com

With thousands of construction workers and contractors needing long-term housing, the world’s largest hotel franchisor is launching a new brand for the booming boots-and-hardhat market. G eoff Ballotti is staring at a map on his office wall and likes what he sees. Nearly two dozen dots sprinkled across the United States represent future semiconductor factories. Outside of the microchip sector, few executives would seek out such a stodgy map from the Semiconductor Industry Association, let alone hang it on a wall. But for the CEO of Wyndham Hotels & Resorts (2022 revenue: $1.56 billion), each dot on that map represents a giant, flashing-light opportunity. Ballotti quickly rattles off examples of locations where new chip factories are slated to appear. Intel is building two plants in Chandler, Arizona, at around $30 billion a pop. In Texas, plants have been announced by Texas Instruments in Sherman ($30 billion) and by Samsung in Taylor ($25 billion). In Indiana, they are … [Read more...] about Wyndham Hotels Grabs A Windfall From America’s Infrastructure Agenda
