Zika virus is primarily transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito from the Aedes genus, mainly Aedes aegypti. (Representative image) Emphasising the pressing need for an enhanced surveillance of Zika virus cases in India, an Indian Council of Medical Research’s (ICMR) study has shown that the infection has silently spread to almost all parts of the country. The ICMR scientists conducted a retrospective screening of dengue and chikungunya negative clinical samples which were stored in labs to understand the extent of the spread of Zika in India. The scientists who conducted the study revealed the virus was in circulation in Delhi, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Punjab, and Telangana, in addition to Kerala, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh in 2021. Dr Pragya Yadav, top scientist at the ICMR-National Institute of Virology (NIV), said that the vector control method (mosquito control method) is an important step that should be employed rigorously by state governments. 5 Hydrogen Stocks to Watch
Hydrogen is an energy source that emits zero greenhouse gases when burned. The only waste product is water vapor. That makes it a cleaner alternative energy source than fossil fuels like natural gas, oil, and coal. The drawback to hydrogen as a fuel source is that we rarely find it in a gaseous form. And although we can produce hydrogen from a variety of sources, some of those methods emit greenhouse gases. On top of that, we don't yet make it at the scale needed to be economically competitive with fossil fuels. However, that could change in the coming years. Several companies are working hard to tap into the enormous potential for this potentially emission-free fuel. Here's a look at some of the leading hydrogen stocks. Image source: Getty Images. What to know about investing in hydrogen There are several ways to produce hydrogen. Some methods result in the production of carbon dioxide as a byproduct. The industry labels these forms "blue hydrogen." Using … [Read more...] about 5 Hydrogen Stocks to Watch
Electricity tariff surcharge status quo a negative surprise for TNB
- A + A KUALA LUMPUR (June 26): While the public welcomed the government's decision not to raise electricity tariff surcharge in the coming six months, the move is a negative surprise for Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), which already saw cash flow squeeze, rising debt levels and record-high receivables in the first quarter as a result of rising fuel costs. TNB, which procures coal and natural gas for Peninsular Malaysia's power generation, may need to borrow more to fund the procurement if it cannot quickly recover the earlier spending on fuel costs, analysts said. Last Friday (June 24), Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the government had maintained the 1H22 (first half of 2022) electricity tariff surcharge of 3.7 sen/kwh for non-domestic users, and a rebate of two sen/kwh for domestic users for the July-December 2022 period. In a nutshell, TNB pays upfront for fuel costs before they are compensated six months down the road through a higher tariff … [Read more...] about Electricity tariff surcharge status quo a negative surprise for TNB
Behind The Scenes: OKC Thunder Rookie Jalen Williams’ Ascension Into Draft Lottery
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin “We draft people first and players second,” said Thunder GM Sam Presti last summer. When Santa Clara guard Jalen Williams was taken No. 12 overall in Thursday night’s draft, it was surprising to some. However, when you dig deeper into his game and personal story it makes complete sense. A late bloomer, Williams wasn’t on many NBA teams’ radars as a top pick until after his final college season. At the Thunder’s rookie introductory press conference on Saturday, Presti even admitted that the team didn’t truly consider Williams in the lottery until later in the draft process. “The truth on Jalen is our eyes really opened later to him in this process,” Presti said. “I wish I could tell you that last year at Santa Clara I could say we knew this guy was a lottery pick. That wasn’t the case.” It took a spectacular pre-draft process on and off the court to spark what ended up being a perfect scenario for both parties. … [Read more...] about Behind The Scenes: OKC Thunder Rookie Jalen Williams’ Ascension Into Draft Lottery
Democrats appear to be helping Colorado election deniers win primaries. Here’s why
For Colorado Democrats, the reversal of Roe vs. Wade by the U.S. Supreme Court underscores why politicians like Greg Lopez, the top-line candidate in the Republican race to unseat Democratic Gov. Jared Polis, are so dangerous. Lopez not only believes abortion should be banned in all cases, but also told The Denver Post earlier this month that anyone who becomes pregnant because they were raped should see the pregnancy as a good opportunity. “I’m a firm believer that a child brings happiness into the lives of people,” he said. “It may not have been something that you planned on, it was something you didn’t agree to, but for me a child brings happiness.” Democratic leaders and groups in Colorado roundly and regularly denounce Lopez and other politicians for these kinds of remarks. But at the same time, Democratic campaign groups are spending millions to advance those politicians’ careers — temporarily. These groups have run ads and mailers and sent out texts and emails … [Read more...] about Democrats appear to be helping Colorado election deniers win primaries. Here’s why
Can Cities Survive Excessive Heat?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The numbers are scary. Forbes’ Brian Bushard tells us over two dozen US cities already have broken heat records this month, and more cities will break records in the next few days. We need dramatic climate action to head off even greater pain and disruption. Bushard notes that “over 75 million people were placed under heat advisories” in just the first two days of the heat wave. That’s 22.5% of the nation’s entire population, with more to come as the heat wave spreads. During this record-breaking heat wave, cities face rising deaths concentrated among their vulnerable populations. As the economy grows, it will mainly grow in cities and metropolitan areas, meaning more urban heat risks coupled with economic growth. My New School colleague Timon McPhearson, Director of the New School’s Urban Systems Lab and an expert in urban ecology and climate, documents how climate damage is caused by and intersects with city … [Read more...] about Can Cities Survive Excessive Heat?
Dish wireless — a result of T-Mobile, Sprint merger — could give metro Denver a second shot at telecom glory
Dish Network’s agreement to build a new national wireless network has the potential to bring thousands of jobs to metro Denver and restore the region’s faded status as a telecommunications hub. As a condition of approving T-Mobile’s $26.5 billion acquisition of Sprint , the Nos. 3 and 4 wireless carriers in the United States, the Department of Justice demanded a new national wireless carrier be formed to address anti-trust concerns and preserve competition. Dish Network, which was sitting on $21 billion worth of wireless spectrum, was in a rare position to take on the challenge. Dish, based in Douglas County, will pay $1.4 billion to acquire Sprint’s three prepaid brands and their 9.3 million customers. Sprint is providing necessary wireless spectrum for another $3.6 billion. T-Mobile will allow Dish to use its wireless network for seven years as Dish builds out a 5G network from scratch, something the company estimates will cost around $10 billion. “Imagine if somebody … [Read more...] about Dish wireless — a result of T-Mobile, Sprint merger — could give metro Denver a second shot at telecom glory
5G is coming to Denver, and it’s not just for smartphones: It could mean super-fast internet at home, too
Starry, a Boston technology company, launched a 5G broadband service in Denver late last month, one it promises will bring, for the dollar spent, much faster and more reliable broadband services to thousands of people living in apartments and condos. “There is so little choice of internet-only service out there,” said Alex Moulle-Berteaux, the company’s chief operating officer. “Many of our subscribers are cord cutters.” Starry is targeting those frustrated with the slower and sometimes spotty DSL service from CenturyLink and the faster, but more expensive and entangled packages from Xfinity. It is bringing a third option to the table, 5G wireless . For those in reach of the signal, the network provides a minimum speed of 200 Megabits per second (Mbps), up and down, for a flat $50 a month, without caps on data usage, no equipment charges and no long-term contracts. Moulle-Berteaux said the company has speeds that are five times as fast. Starry represents a “fixed” use … [Read more...] about 5G is coming to Denver, and it’s not just for smartphones: It could mean super-fast internet at home, too
From satellite television to a new 5G cellular network: DISH engineers a massive transformation
DISH lit up a new 5G cellular network in more than 120 cities on June 14, including Grand Junction and Pueblo, meeting an early target federal regulators had set for the construction of the nation’s fourth wireless network. Whether Project Genesis, as the network is called, succeeds or fails will determine the fate of one of Colorado’s largest public companies, and could weigh heavily on Denver’s future as a center of telecommunications innovation, a legacy that goes back decades to the early days of cable television. “Through DISH’s efforts, Denver is becoming a wireless hub,” said John Swieringa, president and chief operating officer of DISH Wireless. “Our partners are coming here, too, and investing in people and resources in this market. We expect Denver to become a leader in 5G.” DISH Wireless has hired more than 1,600 workers in the past 18 months and is looking to add 500 more, Swieringa said. DISH, the parent company, already employs 6,000 people along the Front Range. A … [Read more...] about From satellite television to a new 5G cellular network: DISH engineers a massive transformation
