- A + A MOSCOW (Aug 9): The rouble firmed towards 60 against the U.S. dollar on Tuesday, retaining support from capital controls and high prices for oil, Russia's key export, while stock indexes were mixed as the market lacked momentum. At 0738 GMT, the rouble was 0.6% stronger against the dollar at 60.40, trading in a range between 59 and 62 for the sixth day in a row. Against the euro, the rouble firmed 1.2% to 61.48 , well above the record low of 132.42 it hit days after Moscow sent tens of thousands of troops into Ukraine on Feb. 24. The rouble is the best-performing currency so far this year as it received a boost from the capital controls Russia imposed to shield its economy and the financial system from sweeping western sanctions. However the rouble may gradually weaken in the near term given the lack of news triggers and the fact that the monthly tax payment period that usually boosts demand for the currency will only start later in August, analyst at … [Read more...] about Russian rouble firms towards 60 vs dollar, stocks mixed

Representative image Impostor syndrome seems to be more common than actually thought, though at a collective level. People may often feel that the groups they are affiliated with may be underperforming in comparison to other groups. Although this self-critical approach may work in certain cases, it may also overlook the positives, and decrease the morale of those affiliated with the group. Many in India seem to have a collective/national-level impostor syndrome. While the Indian economy is much better placed than its peers in the emerging markets, and other economies, the government is being criticised on the economic front. The criticism comes when the fundamentals of the Indian economy are robust, despite the exogenous shocks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, supply chain disruptions, monetary policy tightening by the US Federal Reserve, the Ukraine-Russia conflict, and inflated crude oil prices. India's macroeconomic health remains robust despite external pressures, and ongoing … [Read more...] about Bibek Debroy writes: India’s economy is better placed than its peers, other economies around the world
BIDEN DEEPLY UNPOPULAR WITH VOTERS… WSJ: Biden, Democrats Lose Ground on Key Issues, WSJ Poll Finds WASHINGTON—President Biden and his fellow Democrats have lost ground to Republicans on several of the issues most important to voters, a new Wall Street Journal poll finds, a troubling sign for the party seeking to extend its controlling majority of Congress for another two years. The new survey showed that 57% of voters remained unhappy with Mr. Biden’s job performance, despite favorable marks for the president’s response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and a recent State of the Union speech, which provided him an opportunity to directly speak to millions of Americans. Just 42% said they approved of Mr. Biden’s performance in office, which was virtually unchanged from the previous Journal poll in mid-November. Meanwhile, Democratic advantages narrowed over Republicans on issues related to improving education and the Covid-19 response. A 16-percentage-point Democratic edge … [Read more...] about Editor Daily Rundown: Joe Biden Deeply Unpopular With Voters

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Continuing my search for examples of Practical AI , I found a great one in a recent discussion with Vipin Gopal, chief data and analytics officer at Eli Lilly, the $28.31 billion (2021 revenues) pharmaceutical company. It’s practical because it demonstrates how the recent advancements in machine learning, specifically deep learning’s success at analyzing images, can be shown to quantifiably improve a traditional process, in this case in manufacturing. Gopal reported that inspecting the quality of the syringes Lilly produces used to be done manually. The process was then automated using a vision system to find defective syringes. But now, with deep learning algorithms, the overall accuracy of the system improved, with about 20% of previously discarded syringes proven to be non-defective. This resulted in reduced downtime and did not even require replacing the existing hardware component of the system. Another example of … [Read more...] about Eli Lilly And Parexel Talk About The ROI Of Practical AI

[+] Combined Cycle Journal For electricity, the lifeblood of our modern world , efficiency has been installed as the 1st choice to reduce energy usage and related GHG emissions. Although renewables are ranked 2nd in this critical "loading order," 3rd ranked natural gas often gets deployed 1st because of greater availability and reliability. This demonstrates why since California first installed its Renewable Portfolio Standard in 2003, natural gas' share in the power generation mix has actually risen from 47% then to 61% today. Thanks to its clean burning, predictable, and flexible nature, natural gas has become an increasingly attractive fuel, boosted by a production boom and lower prices. Evolving technologies will continue to allow gas to play an expanding role in the clean generation of electricity. … [Read more...] about U.S. Natural Gas Electricity Efficiency is Always Improving

Sunday’s Super Bowl was the most watched television event in American history, tuned into by nearly half of all households and at peak time, more than 117,000,000 viewers. Ad rates were $3.5 million per 30 second spot, and while viewers debated who was better, an overweight Volkswagen obsessed dog or Clint Eastwood, the real beneficiary of all that airtime and all those viewers was the city of Indianapolis. “Ten years from now, I think we will look back on this one single day as the tipping point in tourism and perception for the city,” said Chris Gahl, Vice President of Marketing for the Indianapolis Convention and Visitors Association. Several years ago when the city decided to go for the 2011 Game (it ended up with 2012), the bid process required $25 million in non-taxpayer funds, and several … [Read more...] about Super Bowl XLVI’s Real Winner? Paolo Gumabao “I appreciate him so much for accepting me—a child who isn’t his—and for treating me like his own,” said actor Paolo Gumabao as a way to pay tribute to the man who raised him. Even though Paolo’s biological father is ’80s actor Dennis Roldan, Paolo grew up in the care of his mom Sheryl Sorreta and stepfather Pao Chen. “I love and respect my stepfather so much because of all the things he did for me. This was why I was able to completely relate to the story of Jason,” he told reporters during a recent virtual media gathering to promote the Aug. 20 episode of the drama anthology “Maalaala Mo Kaya” (MMK). Paolo and Nonie Buencamino play son and father, respectively, in a story about how they accepted each other’s sexuality and profession. “Jason is gay so he looked up to his mother more, and he was never really close to his father while growing up. Jason also does not appreciate what his dad does for a living… as a garbage collector,” Paolo explained. “It is a story … [Read more...] about Why ‘story of acceptance’in MMK felt very personalto Paolo Gumabao
Cherie Gil There was a point in Cherie Gil’s illustrious career when she questioned herself if there was anything else she could leave behind in the industry aside from her “famous line” about second-rate, trying-hard copycats. But as heartfelt tributes for the beloved actress poured in on social media—shortly after news broke that she died from cancer last Aug. 5—it became unquestionably clear that Cherie’s legacy goes beyond the iconic “contravida” roles she played, or any other performances she gave on television, film and stage. For her family, loved ones and the people fortunate enough to have worked with her on- and offscreen, Cherie was more than a versatile talent: She was also a friend, a sister, a mentor, a second mother. For her niece Max Eigenmann, Cherie was the one person she turned to when she was feeling down. “She always knew what to do to make me feel better,” she said, reminiscing about the intimate conversations they had during their yoga sessions or as … [Read more...] about Leaving a lasting legacy: Cherie Gil more than just an iconic ‘contravida’
Question : How can I focus on investing when I am busy with my 8 am to 5 pm job? I have a co-worker who manages the funds of our other co-workers on the side. But he is always being caught by his boss doing things other than his job. Answer: Mark my words, investing in registered financial securities is not just some hobby that you can perform in your spare time. That is why billion-dollar industries have sprouted to facilitate such investing. You need to be all S.E.T. to invest directly in registered financial securities all by yourself. “S” stands for sizable funds. Sure, you can buy financial securities with a small amount of money. But like in many things, it is so easy to buy. What is more challenging is making money. And to make money on financial securities, you will need to have access to in-depth information. You will also need to have “E,” which stands for both expertise and experience. You may be given investing information by your broker. But if you are not the … [Read more...] about On your mark, get S.E.T., go!
