Wall St rises as growth stocks gain after two days of selloff
- A + A NEW YORK/BENGALURU (May 20): US stock indexes rose on Friday led by megacap growth and healthcare shares at the end of a volatile week, roiled by concerns over the impact of rising inflation on earnings and the fallout of rate hikes on economic growth. Nine of the 11 major S&P sectors advanced in morning trade. Energy was the top performer, up 2.2%, followed by healthcare and technology sectors. Microsoft Corp, Amazon.com and Apple Inc rose between 1.5% and 1.8%, providing the biggest boost to the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq. The real question is whether this will last by the end of the day," Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at CFRA Research, said. "It is definitely going to be a traders' battle today. The market is trying to orchestrate at least a near-term relief rally, which is normal within bear market trends." Mondelez International to keep Cadbury chocs and biscuits affordable
- A + A KUALA LUMPUR (May 20): Mondelēz International, manufacturer of Cadbury Dairy Milk chocolate and OREO biscuits, has taken various measures to mitigate the effects of global cost-push inflation to ensure that its products remain affordable and of the same high quality, said managing director for Malaysia and Singapore Narmeen Khan. This is particularly with respect to transportation, packaging, edible oils, and dairy, as well as supply-chain bottlenecks, she told Bernama . Songwriter Yumi Lacsamana returns to her first love with ‘Pundi’
Yumi Lacsamana As a professional songwriter, falling into the occasional creative slump is almost an inevitability, Yumi Lacsamana said. But while there are days when inspiration is seemingly depleted, she knows that, somehow, it will always come back sooner or later. “You’ll really come to a point where you feel like you’re running out of ideas, and end up thinking, ‘Is there something I can write that hasn’t been done yet?’” she said in a video conference for her latest single, the pensive piano ballad “Pundi” (Viva Records). But sometimes, all it takes is a random stimulus to get the gears turning. The idea for Sarah Geronimo’s smash hit “Kilometro,” for instance, popped up while she was having coffee with her songwriting partner, Thyro Alfaro. “You can find inspiration anywhere … like, when you’re having coffee when a car comes roaring past. You never know when inspiration will strike, so you don’t really run out of it,” she said. Personal challenges Yumi, who won the … [Read more...] about Songwriter Yumi Lacsamana returns to her first love with ‘Pundi’
US university charges on with ‘power suit’ as a new battery for electric cars, spacecraft
ORLANDO, Florida: University of Central Florida scientists are charging on with an experimental battery capable of reinventing how automobiles and spacecraft are made. By reworking the idea of energy sources, a UCF research group is creating a lightweight battery that would double as the outer shell of a vehicle in what the group is calling its “power suit” project. Led by UCF College of Engineering Professor Jayan Thomas, the group plans to accomplish this with nanotechnology – supercapacitor composite material involving graphene arranged over carbon fiber in a fan-like structure, Thomas said. “The advantage is its lightweight, and can increase the mileage because you’re reducing the weight of the car and in addition to that, you can store energy like your battery in the same composites,” said Thomas, who conducts his research at UCF’s NanoScience Technology Center. While reducing weight, the suit is thought to increase an electric car’s range by 25% to 30%; equating to about … [Read more...] about US university charges on with ‘power suit’ as a new battery for electric cars, spacecraft
