More jobs needed for pandemic-hit youth, says WB
MANILA – The Philippine government urgently needs to adopt “more targeted” policies that would address employment struggles among youth, who bore the brunt of the shock that the pandemic inflicted on the domestic job market, according to the World Bank (WB). In a report launched on March 22, the multilateral lender said the employment situation in the country is recovering but still far from the vibrancy seen before the pandemic, with “elementary,” low-paying occupations replacing high-productivity jobs that were lost during the past three years of disruption. WB senior economist Yoonyoung Cho, who presented highlights of the report, said that as of the second quarter of 2022, jobs have returned, but some of the prepandemic progress was reversed. Cho said there has been a decrease in salaried jobs and an increase in unpaid work, elementary occupations and poverty. She said recovery has been uneven, such that this was robust in sectors like information and communication … [Read more...] about More jobs needed for pandemic-hit youth, says WB
Leadership with Fr. Ben
Good leadership is essential in business, in families, in society. Today, when leadership has become increasingly toxic on various fronts, we need to examine the formation of leaders who prioritize the most vulnerable and who also mobilize others to support their efforts. “If Ateneo’s significant others are fellow Filipinos, then caring for the great majority poor is central to mission,” says Fr. Bienvenido Nebres, former president of Ateneo de Manila University. Citing Nobel economist Amartya Sen’s definition of poverty as lack of capability, he guides young Ateneo graduates who are at the forefront of empowering the poor. In 2012, they started a support group dubbed #LeadershipWithFrBen. Edna “Bo peep” Franco, chair of Ateneo’s PhD in Leadership Studies, and I worked on a book that chronicles their journeys. It was launched last March 15, on Fr. Ben’s 83rd birthday. Several doctoral students talked to and wrote about these young leaders, whose stories are humbling and uplifting. … [Read more...] about Leadership with Fr. Ben

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin O n Wednesday , startup Relativity Space successfully launched its Terran 1 rocket from its launch complex at Cape Canaveral, Florida, after two previous attempts had been scrubbed. However, the rocket failed to reach orbit due to a failure with the upper stage engine after a successful stage separation. The rocket, which was almost entirely 3D-printed, is an industry first. Despite the failure, the event will give the company valuable data as it moves into future test launches. The company manufacture its rockets with its Stargate printers, which can help build a rocket from raw materials to flight readiness in about 60 days. “Not only did we develop a new rocket, but we also developed a brand new manufacturing platform that we've used to produce a majority of that rocket” says Relativity’s SVP of revenue operations Josh Brost. The company was founded in 2015 by Tim Ellis and Jordan Noone, both of whom had been … [Read more...] about Relativity Space Launches Its First 3D-Printed Rocket, But Fails To Reach Orbit
The Importance Of Benchmarking
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin bench·mark: to evaluate or check by comparison with a standard. /ˈben(t)SHmärk/ verb — gerund or present participle: benchmarking example: “we are benchmarking our performance against external criteria” The entrepreneurial community sometimes views the corporate fascination with benchmarking as a symptom of large company conservatism: when you don’t know what to do, check to see what your peers are doing instead of trying something new. Benchmarking is often dismissed as “paralysis by analysis” hated by fast-moving startup CEOs and institutional VCs. But benchmarking against best practices occurs for good reason. Over time, best practices emerge based on the experience of what actions led to successful outcomes. This is especially important in a field where there is little to no formal education, no certifications, and relatively distant regulatory agencies. In real estate, law, or … [Read more...] about The Importance Of Benchmarking
