CEO Boot Camp Frameworks And Insights
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin This week, PrimeGenesis gathered seven CEOs from its clients for a day to share insights and learning. The CEOs came from pharmaceuticals, forensic engineering, die-cast manufacturing, consumer products, agriculture, retail and sports. This note lays out the frameworks discussed and insights the CEOs shared across strategic, organizational and operating leadership as well as personal influence and impact. Strategic Leadership Strategic leadership is about focus. The fundamental questions are where to play and how to win. How to win choices in turn all flow from the enterprise’s core focus. As Michael Porter taught us, all enterprises design, produce, sell, deliver, and serve in one way or another. The most successful enterprises have a primary focus on either design, production, delivery or service in addition to selling which all must do. U.S. Defense Companies Are World-Class Innovators. Why Doesn’t Washington Know That?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The U.S. Department of Defense is a huge consumer of technology, and as a result America is home to many of the world’s biggest makers of military hardware. If you were to infer from this that Americans have a love affair with defense companies, you’d be wrong. It is a longstanding tradition in the domestic political culture to view military contractors with suspicion. That tradition is not confined to one party. During the 1920s, Republicans led the charge in labeling military suppliers like Dupont as “merchants of death.” Fifty years later, during the Vietnam War, it was Democrats who took the lead in condemning the “military-industrial complex.” The latest wrinkle in this longstanding bipartisan bias is the charge that traditional defense companies are not innovative, and that if the Pentagon wants cutting-edge technology it needs to turn to commercial companies in Austin, Boston and Silicon Valley. Healthy planet needs ‘ocean action’ from Asia
As the Second Global Ocean Conference opens today in Lisbon, governments in Asia and the Pacific must seize the opportunity to enhance cooperation and solidarity to address a host of challenges that endanger what is a lifeline for millions of people in the region. If done right, ocean action will also be climate action but this will require working in concert on a few fronts. First, we must invest in and support science and technology to produce key solutions. Strengthening science-policy interfaces to bridge practitioners and policymakers contributes to a sound understanding of ocean-climate synergies. This in turn enables better policy design. Additionally, policy support tools can help governments identify and prioritise actions through policy, Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) tracking and scenario development. We must also make the invisible visible through ocean data: just three of 10 targets for SDG 14, "Life Below Water", are measurable in Asia and the Pacific. Better … [Read more...] about Healthy planet needs ‘ocean action’ from Asia
Challenging Proximity Bias Could Be Key To Culture And Retention In Post-Pandemic Work
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Job seekers are re-evaluating what they are looking for at work, and one big shift they are adamant about is keeping the flexibility they benefited from during the pandemic. This creates new challenges for many businesses who are still experimenting with a mix of in-person, hybrid, and remote work, and struggling to ensure that their hybrid environments are equitable. At the same time, employees are having difficulty navigating the new dynamics of hybrid workplaces, and “proximity bias” has emerged as a top concern for executives, business leaders and hybrid and remote staff when it comes to post-pandemic work. Why are managers and executives paying more attention to people who are at the office, rather than those who are working from home, and can we reasonably expect them to shed this old habit as more staff demand flexibility in where they work? To get a better sense of how proximity bias is impacting the overall … [Read more...] about Challenging Proximity Bias Could Be Key To Culture And Retention In Post-Pandemic Work
Why Niching Down Is an Entrepreneur’s Best Chance of Standing Out
Entrepreneurs are always trying to stand out , and understandably so -- after all, there is a lot of competition out there. The need to stand out becomes even more vital in light of the recent Covid-19 pandemic. Some 55 percent of small-business owners currently expect it will take at least six months for the economic situation to get back to normal. So what's the best way to stand out, especially if your business operates in a particularly crowded niche? The solution isn't to try to go bigger. Instead, it's the opposite. Identifying with more passionate audiences While it is true that many sub-niches have a smaller potential audience than the broader niche, these smaller segments tend to be more tightly connected. If your product or service is a hit, it is more likely to take off on a community-wide level. This is the case with Winston Chen, who developed a text-to-speech app designed for individuals with visual impairments and learning disabilities. … [Read more...] about Why Niching Down Is an Entrepreneur’s Best Chance of Standing Out
