European CDC Calls Omicron BA.4, BA.5 Covid-19 Variants Of Concern

May 16, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin When something goes from being of interest to being a concern, it’s usually taken a turn for the worse. That would apply to a date, something in your refrigerator, and Covid-19 variants and subvariants. On May 12, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) reclassified the BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron subvariants of the Covid-19 coronavirus as variants of concern (VOC), up from being variants of interest (VOI). This shouldn’t be a cause for panic, as public health authorities will rarely say, “OK, everyone, it’s time to panic. Here’s how you should flap your arms.” However, as the label implies, these new variants should indeed be of concern and a reminder to maintain Covid-19 precautions such as wearing face masks while in indoor public areas. This recent leveling up of BA.4 and BA.5 occurred because these two Omicron sub-lineages seem to be spreading more readily and rapidly than earlier versions of the … [Read more...] about European CDC Calls Omicron BA.4, BA.5 Covid-19 Variants Of Concern

FDA Rejects Bid To Authorize Cheap Antidepressant As Covid Treatment

May 16, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline The Food and Drug Administration on Monday declined to authorize a cheap and widely available antidepressant as a treatment for Covid-19, finding that a study indicating the drug was effective against the disease was severely limited. Key Facts Fluvoxamine maleate —which is used to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder and other conditions—also has anti-inflammatory properties, making it a possible treatment for Covid-19, which apparently inflicts many of its symptoms through inflammation . The request for an FDA emergency use authorization for fluvoxamine was based mainly on a preliminary study published in January by the Lancet , which indicated that the drug reduced chances of hospitalization or six-hour emergency care visits by 32% among patients at heightened risk of severe Covid-19. However, in a rare statement Monday explaining its decision to reject the … [Read more...] about FDA Rejects Bid To Authorize Cheap Antidepressant As Covid Treatment

Kim Jong Un Slams ‘Irresponsible’ Government And Health Officials As North Korea’s Covid Outbreak Surges

May 16, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline North Korean leader Kim Jong Un blamed his own government officials for failing to tackle the country’s surging Covid-19 outbreak and ordered his military to step in as the number of suspected cases surged past 1.2 million in just four days since the outbreak was first reported. Key Facts According to the state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the country reported 392,920 new people with “fever” and eight new deaths linked to Covid-19 on Monday. The state media is only reporting the number of cases with fever—one of many symptoms of Covid—as North Korea is believed to lack adequate supplies to carry out large-scale testing. Since the start of the current outbreak, North Korea has reported 50 deaths linked to the virus. At a Politburo meeting of the ruling party on Sunday, Kim blamed the “irresponsible work attitude” of his government and health officials for the country’s botched … [Read more...] about Kim Jong Un Slams ‘Irresponsible’ Government And Health Officials As North Korea’s Covid Outbreak Surges

WHO Endorses Pfizer’s Antiviral Pill Paxlovid For High-Risk Covid Patients But Says Benefits ‘Trivial’ For Low-Risk Groups

April 21, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline The World Health Organization has recommended Pfizer’s antiviral pill Paxlovid to treat high-risk Covid patients, the agency announced Friday, which it said is safer, easier to administer and better at preventing hospitalizations than other available treatments. Key Facts The WHO’s expert panel endorsed Paxlovid—a combination of nirmatrelvir, which inhibits coronavirus replication, and ritonavir, an HIV inhibitor which also slows the liver’s breakdown of nirmatrelvir—for Covid patients without severe disease who are at high risk of hospitalization. High risk groups include older patients, those with compromised immune systems or chronic illnesses and the unvaccinated, according to the guidelines. The panel cited new data from two clinical trials involving 3,100 patients, which found Paxlovid led to 84 fewer hospital admissions per 1,000 patients treated with little or no risk of severe side effects … [Read more...] about WHO Endorses Pfizer’s Antiviral Pill Paxlovid For High-Risk Covid Patients But Says Benefits ‘Trivial’ For Low-Risk Groups

Zoom Is Crushing Students’ Spirits. It’s Time To Come Back To Class.

May 16, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin When the Covid-19 pandemic first hit, in March of 2020, colleges everywhere (including Johns Hopkins University, where I teach and conduct research) shut down and sent everyone home. Within two weeks, we switched all of our classes to Zoom. It was a remarkable pivot, and necessary at the time. But we’re now more than two years into the pandemic, and many colleges and universities are still holding classes on Zoom, or offering a Zoom option for students who want it. This has become, to put it bluntly, a disaster for students. The Chronicle of Higher Education published a lengthy article in April that surveyed faculty all over the country. It paints a grim picture: students are reporting mental health problems in record numbers, grades are low, and attendance is even lower. Depression is widespread. College life, it seems, is not good. Most universities returned to in-person classes this past fall, and some … [Read more...] about Zoom Is Crushing Students’ Spirits. It’s Time To Come Back To Class.

When Will We Get Serious About Obesity?

May 16, 2022 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The numbers are staggering. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), two out of every five adult Americans are obese. The CDC defines obesity as having a body mass index (BMI) of>30. To put this into perspective, a 5’9” male weighing 203 pounds or a 5’6” woman weighing 186 pounds has a BMI in excess of 30. Forty percent of us exceed this threshold. Unfortunately, this is an under-appreciated health crisis. Obesity drives blood pressure higher and impacts atherosclerosis resulting in heart attacks, strokes and heart failure. Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the U.S. But this is just the tip of the iceberg. Obesity can lead to type 2 diabetes, which itself can cause kidney disease, amputations and blindness. Thanks to obesity, the prevalence of type 2 diabetes in states like West Virginia, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana is now an astounding 15%. If these metabolic effects … [Read more...] about When Will We Get Serious About Obesity?
