Starry, a Boston technology company, launched a 5G broadband service in Denver late last month, one it promises will bring, for the dollar spent, much faster and more reliable broadband services to thousands of people living in apartments and condos. “There is so little choice of internet-only service out there,” said Alex Moulle-Berteaux, the company’s chief operating officer. “Many of our subscribers are cord cutters.” Starry is targeting those frustrated with the slower and sometimes spotty DSL service from CenturyLink and the faster, but more expensive and entangled packages from Xfinity. It is bringing a third option to the table, 5G wireless . For those in reach of the signal, the network provides a minimum speed of 200 Megabits per second (Mbps), up and down, for a flat $50 a month, without caps on data usage, no equipment charges and no long-term contracts. Moulle-Berteaux said the company has speeds that are five times as fast. Starry represents a “fixed” use … [Read more...] about 5G is coming to Denver, and it’s not just for smartphones: It could mean super-fast internet at home, too

Electricity tariff surcharge status quo a negative surprise for TNB
- A + A KUALA LUMPUR (June 26): While the public welcomed the government's decision not to raise electricity tariff surcharge in the coming six months, the move is a negative surprise for Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB), which already saw cash flow squeeze, rising debt levels and record-high receivables in the first quarter as a result of rising fuel costs. TNB, which procures coal and natural gas for Peninsular Malaysia's power generation, may need to borrow more to fund the procurement if it cannot quickly recover the earlier spending on fuel costs, analysts said. Last Friday (June 24), Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the government had maintained the 1H22 (first half of 2022) electricity tariff surcharge of 3.7 sen/kwh for non-domestic users, and a rebate of two sen/kwh for domestic users for the July-December 2022 period. In a nutshell, TNB pays upfront for fuel costs before they are compensated six months down the road through a higher tariff … [Read more...] about Electricity tariff surcharge status quo a negative surprise for TNB
Henrik Stiesdal helped create wind power as we know it. Will he usher in its next chapter?
Henrik Stiesdal was technically on holiday when the bright-yellow floating steel platform he designed set off on its maiden voyage across the North Sea in late July 2021 with a single wind turbine mounted on top. advertisement advertisement The contraption—a hulking 740 feet tall and weighing several thousand tons—represented the culmination of five years of work for Stiesdal and his small team, who had endlessly tested and tinkered with the design so that the turbine and its platform would withstand the harsh conditions at sea. The wider energy industry was watching the launch, too. While other companies had set up similar projects, none had the cachet of Stiesdal’s. A legendary figure in the renewables industry, the 65-year-old Dane was one of a few pioneers who championed the three-bladed turbine in the late 1970s, paving the way for wind power’s expansion as one of the world’s dominant sources of renewable energy. advertisement … [Read more...] about Henrik Stiesdal helped create wind power as we know it. Opposition parties unite to pick Yashwant Sinha as presidential nominee
File image of former Union minister Yashwant Sinha Seventeen major Opposition parties on June 21 reached a consensus on pitching former Union minister Yashwant Sinha as their joint candidate for the presidential polls. "We have unanimously decided that Yashwant Sinha will be the common candidate of the Opposition for the presidential elections," Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, who attended the meeting of Opposition parties in New Delhi, told the media. "We are going to file the nomination for the presidential elections on 27th June at 11.30 am," added Sharad Pawar, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief, who also attended the meet. In a joint statement, the Opposition bloc also appealed to the Centre-ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies to extend support to Sinha, in order to get him elected unopposed. "Ideally, a consensus candidate of the government and the Opposition should be elected for the highest office of the Republic. However, the initiative … [Read more...] about Opposition parties unite to pick Yashwant Sinha as presidential nominee
‘Stranger Things’ Dethroned In Netflix’s Top 10 List By A New Show
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin This post was republished on 6/25. Well, it finally happened, and it took another juggernaut to knock Stranger Things season 4 off the #1 spot on Netflix’s top 10 list after nearly a month planted there. That would be season 3 of The Umbrella Academy, Netflix’s hyper-successful non-Marvel or DC superhero series about an odd band of brothers and sister dealing with time travel paradoxes upon their return. Stranger Things season 4 almost lasted in the #1 spot until July 1, which is when part 2 of the season airs with the final two episodes, which will no doubt propel it to #1 yet again for a period of time. Right now, the show is slowly inching toward Squid Game’s viewership record, but it will need those final two episodes to perform even better than the previous seven if it hopes to catch it. Regardless, Stranger Things season 4 has set all manner of English-language records for the service, and even if … [Read more...] about ‘Stranger Things’ Dethroned In Netflix’s Top 10 List By A New Show
Behind The Scenes: OKC Thunder Rookie Jalen Williams’ Ascension Into Draft Lottery
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin “We draft people first and players second,” said Thunder GM Sam Presti last summer. When Santa Clara guard Jalen Williams was taken No. 12 overall in Thursday night’s draft, it was surprising to some. However, when you dig deeper into his game and personal story it makes complete sense. A late bloomer, Williams wasn’t on many NBA teams’ radars as a top pick until after his final college season. At the Thunder’s rookie introductory press conference on Saturday, Presti even admitted that the team didn’t truly consider Williams in the lottery until later in the draft process. “The truth on Jalen is our eyes really opened later to him in this process,” Presti said. “I wish I could tell you that last year at Santa Clara I could say we knew this guy was a lottery pick. That wasn’t the case.” It took a spectacular pre-draft process on and off the court to spark what ended up being a perfect scenario for both parties. … [Read more...] about Behind The Scenes: OKC Thunder Rookie Jalen Williams’ Ascension Into Draft Lottery
If Everton Can’t Hold On To Richarlison, How Will They Replace Him?
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin If the transfer rumours are to be believed, Everton could lose one of their best players this summer. Brazilian forward Richarlison has been one of the club’s key players since arriving from Watford in 2018, but his talent and rise within the game suggest he should be playing at a higher level for a team in one of UEFA’s continental club competitions. Numerous clubs participating in those competitions have shown interest in the 25-year-old, including Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain, and Real Madrid. The former Fluminense man is popular with Everton fans, who have become attached to him over the last few seasons, but even they probably wouldn’t begrudge him a move. Their worry would revolve around a lack of confidence in Everton suitably replacing such a player given the club’s haphazard operation in the transfer market in recent years. Replacing Richarlison could be the first big test of a … [Read more...] about If Everton Can’t Hold On To Richarlison, How Will They Replace Him?
From satellite television to a new 5G cellular network: DISH engineers a massive transformation
DISH lit up a new 5G cellular network in more than 120 cities on June 14, including Grand Junction and Pueblo, meeting an early target federal regulators had set for the construction of the nation’s fourth wireless network. Whether Project Genesis, as the network is called, succeeds or fails will determine the fate of one of Colorado’s largest public companies, and could weigh heavily on Denver’s future as a center of telecommunications innovation, a legacy that goes back decades to the early days of cable television. “Through DISH’s efforts, Denver is becoming a wireless hub,” said John Swieringa, president and chief operating officer of DISH Wireless. “Our partners are coming here, too, and investing in people and resources in this market. We expect Denver to become a leader in 5G.” DISH Wireless has hired more than 1,600 workers in the past 18 months and is looking to add 500 more, Swieringa said. DISH, the parent company, already employs 6,000 people along the Front Range. A … [Read more...] about From satellite television to a new 5G cellular network: DISH engineers a massive transformation
Dish wireless — a result of T-Mobile, Sprint merger — could give metro Denver a second shot at telecom glory
Dish Network’s agreement to build a new national wireless network has the potential to bring thousands of jobs to metro Denver and restore the region’s faded status as a telecommunications hub. As a condition of approving T-Mobile’s $26.5 billion acquisition of Sprint , the Nos. 3 and 4 wireless carriers in the United States, the Department of Justice demanded a new national wireless carrier be formed to address anti-trust concerns and preserve competition. Dish Network, which was sitting on $21 billion worth of wireless spectrum, was in a rare position to take on the challenge. Dish, based in Douglas County, will pay $1.4 billion to acquire Sprint’s three prepaid brands and their 9.3 million customers. Sprint is providing necessary wireless spectrum for another $3.6 billion. T-Mobile will allow Dish to use its wireless network for seven years as Dish builds out a 5G network from scratch, something the company estimates will cost around $10 billion. “Imagine if somebody … [Read more...] about Dish wireless — a result of T-Mobile, Sprint merger — could give metro Denver a second shot at telecom glory
Sales of TV antennas on the rise, here’s how to buy one
About 10 times a month, Anthony Leyba climbs up on top of a stranger’s roof or attic to install a TV antenna. That’s about twice as often as he did three years ago, when business picked up again after the U.S. transitioned to digital TV in 2009. Back then, customers bought antennas just to keep getting local TV channels for free. These days, customers call him because they’re cutting cable or satellite TV in favor of internet video, like Netflix or Sling TV. “That’s one of the reasons why I started my company,” said Leyba, owner of Digital Concepts in Denver. “I saw it coming. I was formerly installing cable for Comcast and was seeing a lot of people ordering internet only.” While the newer video services are cheaper, most don’t offer all of the local channels, which are still free if you have a decent TV antenna. And that’s why TV antenna sales and installation is growing years after people ditched cathode-ray-tube TVs. Deciding to add an antenna is the easy part. Picking the … [Read more...] about Sales of TV antennas on the rise, here’s how to buy one
