Operation Quartzrite in Newmarket lead to six arrests Picture: SUFFOLK CONSTABULARYThe multi-agency day of action saw vehicles which were suspected of criminality brought back to a site at The Meadows car park off the A142, where checks were conducted. Police said the aim of the operation was to disrupt and frustrate the activities of criminals, including organised crime groups, who commit offences across county borders on the roads. A total of 83 vehicles were escorted back to the site, with just eight leaving clear of any offences. Six men were arrested and taken to Bury St Edmunds Police Investigation Centre for questioning. Picture: GOOGLE Archant A fire in a block of flats in Newmarket has prompted a massive response from emergency services. The fire started shortly after 3pm in a first storey flat in the St James building in Icewell Hill. There were 10 fire engines in attendance from a range of locations and police closed Exning Road, Rowley Drive and Tannersfield Way. Emergency services were called after smoke was seen coming from a flat by residents and pumps were in attendance from Newmarket, Cambridge, Ely, Soham, Bury St Edmunds and, Mildenhall.Ambulance crews were also in attendance. The fire is now under control and fire fighters are currently checking the flats above and below the fire to make sure they were not damaged by the blaze. Picture: GREATER ANGLIA Archant Greater Anglia has started testing its new Stadler trains for regional trains during the day as well as at night – and the first trips to Suffolk might not be far away. The trains, which are powered by either by electric or diesel power, are currently being running from the Crown Point depot in Norwich to Diss and back or to Great Yarmouth.The pantograph – which picks up electricity from overhead wires – is being tested along with the doors to ensure that the trains are able to stop at the right place when they reach platforms.The first public services using the new trains, which were built in Switzerland, are not expected to run until the late spring or early summer – but by the end of the year they should be a familiar sight on routes across the region.Signs have had to be installed on the … [Read more...] about Watch: First daylight trips for new GA trains – but no passengers until spring
