For now, because Car-to-X technology isn’t widespread, it doesn’t make sense to roll out the new robots just yet. But they represent one potential solution for the major transition needed in infrastructure as electric cars become more affordable than gas cars, and eventually more common. (Volkswagen itself plans to go all-electric by 2026.) The robotic system is less expensive than installing traditional charging stations. In California alone, where the state plans to ban new gas and diesel-powered car sales in 2035, at least 1 million new charging points will be needed by the end of this decade. … [Read more...] about This helpful little Volkswagen robot will roll up and charge your electric car

Biden plans to fight climate change in a way no U.S. president has before
A new comprehensive climate bill The best way to tackle these sectors would be a comprehensive climate bill that uses some mechanism, such as a clean energy standard, that sets a cap, or limit, on emissions and tightens it over time. Here, the problem lies more in the politics of the moment than anything else. Biden and his team will have to convince lawmakers from fossil fuel-producing states to work on these efforts. … [Read more...] about Biden plans to fight climate change in a way no U.S. president has before
Paris is turning its iconic street into pedestrian gardens
pushes for other forms of transportation—and realized that it would be possible to cut the number of car lanes in half without making the road more congested. On one end of the avenue, where there are little-used gardens now, cars could be removed completely. New bike lanes can be added, along with permeable surfaces and rain gardens that absorb stormwater. New trees would add shade for pedestrians and help clean the air. (The city also plans to ban non-electric vehicles by 2030, so the cars that are left won’t be polluting.) The Place de la Concorde, a huge public square, can be pedestrianized before the 2024 Olympics; the rest of the redesign will happen by the end of the decade. … [Read more...] about Paris is turning its iconic street into pedestrian gardens
This nonprofit is turning empty schoolyards into vibrant public parks
A program of the parks-focused Trust for Public Land, 10 Minute Walk provides grants and assistance to cities to expand their park offerings. The organization’s goal is to help cities put parks and open space within a 10-minute walk of 100% of their residents by 2050. With its own maps identifying park space and demographic breakdowns for more than 14,000 cities in the U.S., 10 Minute Walk is working to show cities just how badly—and where—they need more parks. Schoolyards are low-hanging fruit, and Hussain says car-free street projects and pop-up bike lanes created during the pandemic have shown that cities are able to act quickly when they want to. … [Read more...] about This nonprofit is turning empty schoolyards into vibrant public parks
An artificial intelligence scholar urges technologists to embrace humility
HAI’s reach as an institution is helping to cross new divides as well, beyond those that separate academic worlds. Partnerships with corporations, governments, and NGOs, for instance, will be essential in building a larger community around these values. Already, for example, they’ve helped us organize cross-disciplinary workshops that bring ethical, philosophical, and legal expertise to bear on contentious technologies like facial recognition, with audiences of executives and legislators at both the state and federal level. And our relationships with tech leaders like Google and Amazon allow us to offer powerful cloud computing access—a foundational but often cost-prohibitive resource for modern AI research—to young, innovative thinkers in the form of grants. … [Read more...] about An artificial intelligence scholar urges technologists to embrace humility
