Twitter plan to fight midterm misinformation falls short, voting rights experts say
Representative image. Twitter Inc on Thursday set out a plan to combat the spread of election misinformation that revives previous strategies, but civil and voting rights experts said it would fall short of what is needed to prepare for the upcoming U.S. midterm elections. The social media company said it will apply its civic integrity policy, introduced in 2018, to the Nov. 8 midterms, when numerous U.S. Senate and House of Representatives seats will be up for election. The policy relies on labeling or removing posts with misleading content, focused on messages intended to stop voting or claims intended to undermine public confidence in an election. In a statement, Twitter said it has taken numerous steps in recent months to "elevate reliable resources" about primaries and voting processes. Applying a label to a tweet also means the content is not recommended or distributed to more users. The San Francisco-based company is currently in a legal battle with billionaire Elon … [Read more...] about Twitter plan to fight midterm misinformation falls short, voting rights experts say
US House gives Biden a win with massive bill on climate change, drug prices
- A + A WASHINGTON (Aug 13): The Democratic-led US House of Representatives approved a US$430 billion bill on Friday (Aug 12) that is seen as the biggest climate package in US history, delivering a major legislative victory for President Joe Biden ahead of the Nov 8 midterm elections. The legislation to fight climate change and lower prescription drug prices aims to cut domestic greenhouse gas emissions. It will also allow Medicare to negotiate lower drug prices for the elderly and ensure that corporations and the wealthy pay the taxes they owe. Democrats say it will help combat inflation by reducing the federal deficit. The House voted 220-207 along party lines to pass the measure titled the "Inflation Reduction Act" and send it on to Biden to sign into law. The Senate approved the legislation on Sunday after a marathon, 27-hour session. Biden said he would sign the bill in the week ahead, then the White House would hold a celebration on Sept 6 in honour of what … [Read more...] about US House gives Biden a win with massive bill on climate change, drug prices

The Biggest Lesson From James Webb That No One Is Talking About
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin For those of us who waited with bated breath to see the first images from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), the wait was well worth it. In profoundly beautiful color and detail, these first images of the world’s largest and most powerful space telescope are only the first glimpses at what lies ahead in the coming years. To literally watch the other side of the universe as it was forming over 13 billion years ago is a mind bender. Given the uncanny symmetry that seems to organize all of what we are observing, we can reasonably assume our own solar system formed in the same way. In a sense, we now have photographic proof – a selfie of sorts - to go along with the immortal words “…without form, and void.” (Genesis 1:2) Of course, the fiscal hawks are already screaming about the cost – $10B. That is a lot, but not when considering how much we will advance human civilization with new understandings of the universe. For less … [Read more...] about The Biggest Lesson From James Webb That No One Is Talking About
Jamie Foxx rises again as dad, the vampire hunter, in Netflix’s dreary ‘Day Shift’
(CNN) "Day Shift" is about vampires, but it's one of those Frankenstein-like movies stitched together from used parts, with Jamie Foxx as a family man version of Marvel's Blade , mashed up with horror and buddy comedy. It's the kind of star-driven vehicle that yields obvious benefits to Netflix even if, qualitatively speaking, it doesn't deserve to see the light of day. Indeed, Foxx is clearly a favorite of the Netflix algorithm and likes cashing its checks, having starred in the movie "Project Power" and sitcom "Dad Stop Embarrassing Me!" in the last two years, the latter inspired and produced by his daughter, Corinne Foxx. Parenthood is again at the heart of the plot, such as it is, in "Day Shift," which could just as easily be titled "Dad: Vampire Slayer." Foxx plays Bud Jablonski, a bounty hunter (he masquerades as a pool cleaner) struggling to make ends meet financially, suddenly given a major motivation to earn cash: His ex (Meagan Good) is planning to move away from … [Read more...] about Jamie Foxx rises again as dad, the vampire hunter, in Netflix’s dreary ‘Day Shift’

The Pandemic Inspired People To Seek Jobs And Careers That Offer A Better Work And Life Balance
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The never-ending pandemic has made people reconsider their work lives. Over the last year and a half, almost everyone I’ve spoken with, both personally and professionally, have told me that they’ve been reevaluating their jobs and careers. They question if they can stay in the same type of role for the next five, 10 or 20 years. There is an overwhelming yearning to try something new. I’ve noticed a trend of people seeking out roles that offer a deeper meaning and serve a larger purpose. Some dream about it, while others have started making plans. This entails reinventing themselves, starting all over again or pivoting to other professions. My unscientific anecdotal experiences are backed up by a recent FlexJobs survey of more than 4,600 workers . The survey asked the participants about their careers and what they want from a job. The results showed that nearly 70% of the respondents “would consider changing careers.” … [Read more...] about The Pandemic Inspired People To Seek Jobs And Careers That Offer A Better Work And Life Balance
An Easy Explanation Of What Happens When The Federal Reserve Bank Raises Interest Rates
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin The job market and the economy will be in bad shape for a while. With all the chatter about inflation and a recession, it's hard to understand what is happening. Let’s break it down. A combination of pent-up demand from the pandemic, supply chain disruptions , trillions of dollars flooded into the market from the Federal Reserve Bank, and massive fiscal stimulus packages from both the Trump and Biden administrations helped stoke inflation . Runaway inflation is ruinous to a country. The costs spiral out of control. The poor are disproportionately impacted, as they generally don't have emergency funds or the ability to earn more than the rising inflation rate to keep their heads above water. To decrease the adverse impact of inflation, Jerome Powell, the head of the Federal Reserve Bank, announced that he would raise interest rates to battle inflation and cool down the economy. If you have been looking to … [Read more...] about An Easy Explanation Of What Happens When The Federal Reserve Bank Raises Interest Rates
‘Arcade Paradise’ Review: An Essential Ode To Classic Coin-Ops
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin On the face of it, Arcade Paradise seems to promise too much: an indie management sim boasting a story-driven and evolving environment, 35 pseudo-original games, and a price tag of just $25. Surely some mistake? After 25 hours of playtime–and despite only clearing the main “campaign”, without really digging deep into its plethora of challenges and unlockables– Arcade Paradise is an absolute gem of a game. Despite its slack handful of bugs, glitches, gripes, and box-ticking exercises, Nosebleed Interactive’s spiritual successor to debut Vostok Inc might be the best value for money you’ll get from a game in 2022. At its heart, Arcade Paradise is a profit simulator in a similar vein to House Flipper : an adventure that is, for the most part, as banal as it is exciting. You assume the role of Ashley, tasked with making a laundrette profitable. It happens to have a trio of old arcade machines in a glorified closet. … [Read more...] about ‘Arcade Paradise’ Review: An Essential Ode To Classic Coin-Ops
