‘There’s nothing left’: Mississippi tornado kills 25
By EMILY WAGSTER PETTUS, MICHAEL GOLDBERG and ROGELIO SOLIS ROLLING FORK, Miss. (AP) — A powerful tornado cut a devastating path through Mississippi Friday night, killing more than two dozen people and obliterating dozens of buildings, as it stayed on the ground for more than an hour. The tornado flattened entire blocks of the small Mississippi Delta town of Rolling Fork, reducing homes to piles of rubble, flipping cars on their sides and toppling the water tower. Residents hunkered down in bath tubs and broke into a John Deere store that they converted into a triage center for the wounded. The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency announced late Saturday afternoon in a tweet that the death toll had risen to 25 from 23. Four who were missing have been found but dozens also were injured. Meanwhile other parts of the Deep South were digging out from damage caused by other suspected twisters. Amazon, Other Retailers Revisit Free Shipping Amid Rising Costs
(CTN News) – Amazon and other online retailers are scrambling to make free shipping work. In addition to charging for faster service, they’re raising minimum purchase requirements and shifting more costs to consumers who are struggling. Free delivery is going away, says Ken Morris, managing partner at Cambridge Retail Advisors. According to Morris, many retailers are starting to charge for better seating, luggage transportation, and frequent flyer points. Free shipping raises retailer prices. Despite this, product inflation and soaring shipping costs make the service unsustainable. The company underwrote its package delivery costs with pricey prime subscriptions and fat profits from other businesses. Amazon made other retailers follow, even though they didn’t have Amazon’s advantages. Retail margins are shrinking and shipping rates are skyrocketing for United Parcel Service, FedEx, and the US Postal Service, so e-commerce companies that offer free shipping are … [Read more...] about Amazon, Other Retailers Revisit Free Shipping Amid Rising Costs

Loom is No. 45 on Fast Company’s list of the World’s 50 Most Innovative Companies of 2023 . Explore the full list of companies that are reshaping industries and culture. Video communication has become de rigueur since the pandemic, but rather than just moving a meeting from a conference room to a screen, Loom does something different. Think of it like TikTok for enterprises. By allowing customers to create short videos (up to five minutes long) that can be watched anytime and shared as needed, the eight-year-old company helps its 18 million users across 350,000 businesses eschew time-sucking scheduled video meetings, both internally and externally. Those clients—which include Netflix, HubSpot, and P&G’s Tide brand—have been using it a lot. As of December, more than 215 million “looms” had been … [Read more...] about How Loom became TikTok for enterprises
This handbag is made from an electrical cord. And yes, you can plug it in
Is there anything uglier than an electrical cord? The long, thick plastic wires create clutter everywhere. Artist and designer Nikolas Bentel wanted to explore whether something as mundane as an electrical cord could be transformed into something beautiful. And he may have achieved his goal by creating a handbag out of a 25-foot-long bright orange electrical cord. It drops today on his website for $59. He’s glued and molded the cord into the shape of a small basket—all while keeping the wiring intact, so it can still be plugged in and used. Bentel, 28, is fascinated with helping people to reimagine everyday objects. At his studio, in Locust Valley, New York, he’s created a wacky range of products, including tables made of scraps from a paper mill and a pipe made from a pizza box . In his art, he frequently deploys the skills he acquired from his joint degree in industrial design from the Rhode Island School of Design and modern culture and media from Brown. He’s … [Read more...] about This handbag is made from an electrical cord. And yes, you can plug it in
US to Take Years to Refill Its Strategic Petroleum Reserve
Refilling the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve may take years, U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said this week, reversing plans the Biden administration announced late last year to repurchase at lower prices oil it sold from the reserve in 2022. However, the relatively limited size of the planned repurchases in proportion to global oil demand makes assessing the impact on U.S. crude oil markets somewhat difficult—especially amid current global economic trends and geopolitical challenges. KEY TAKEAWAYS U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said this week it may take years for the government to replenish its Strategic Petroleum Reserve. Current global economic concerns and geopolitical conditions, however, present challenges in assessing the market impact of the decision. Granholm told a House panel Thursday that the U.S. likely would not … [Read more...] about US to Take Years to Refill Its Strategic Petroleum Reserve
