Students Left $3.6 Billion In Pell Grants Unclaimed Last Year

February 5, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Graduating high school students left almost $3.6 billion in Pell Grant funds unclaimed last year because they did not complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). That is the finding of a new report from the National College Attainment Network (NCAN) out this week. The FAFSA is the federal form you must complete to be considered for any financial aid from the federal government, your state, or one of the colleges you hope to attend. FAFSA completion rates are used as an indicator of whether students intend to enroll in college and often provide an early indication of what proportion of recent high school graduates plan on heading to college. FAFSA completion is also strongly associated with college enrollment, so increasing the number of students who complete their aid application may increase the number of students entering higher education. NCAN calculated that 44 percent of the class of 2022 did not … [Read more...] about Students Left $3.6 Billion In Pell Grants Unclaimed Last Year

These Inclusive Lingerie Brands Are Putting a Spotlight on Breast Cancer

February 3, 2023 by www.inc.com

The lingerie industry is no stranger to mission-driven brands. Over the past few years, at least a dozen U.S.-based intimates brands, including Savage x Fenty and Aerie , have gained popularity thanks to their dedication to body positivity. Now, a different type of mission is taking hold of the industry: breast cancer awareness. Dana Donofree was one of the first to embrace this mission. She was diagnosed with breast cancer a day before her 28th birthday, and not long after, she learned that she needed a bilateral mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. Breast cancer is more than the pink ribbon and smiling women in breast cancer awareness ads, she thought. In addition to intense emotional distress , she also had to cope with painful and permanent changes to her body. Donofree, now 40, eventually learned to love her new body. But after her surgeries, she started searching for new bras, and was consistently disappointed. The only mastectomy bras available were … [Read more...] about These Inclusive Lingerie Brands Are Putting a Spotlight on Breast Cancer

These 3 Social-Commerce Strategies Are Ramping Up Sales

January 23, 2023 by www.inc.com

If you've got something to sell, it's time to get social. Social commerce -- using social media to directly sell products or services on-platform -- is far from a new phenomenon. But it is a fast-growing market: In 2023, social-commerce sales in the U.S. are expected to hit $56.2 billion, making up about 4.7 percent of overall e-commerce sales, according to an October 2022 report by McKinsey . Even if that percentage seems unremarkable, there's still good reason to invest in this growing e-commerce channel. Approximately 70 percent of all online purchases are influenced by social media, explains Jay Myers, co-founder of the Winnipeg, Manitoba-headquartered B2B e-commerce business Bold Commerce . "There's huge promise, huge potential," he says -- if businesses can figure out how they can use social media to convert on-platform sales: "The reason why a lot of brands are not seeing success is because they just see [social commerce] as a shiny new tool. They think, … [Read more...] about These 3 Social-Commerce Strategies Are Ramping Up Sales

Behind The Curtain At The London Science Museum IMAX

December 28, 2020 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Recently, I was invited to the reopening of the IMAX theatre in the Science Museum in London , newly dubbed The Ronson Theatre. This location is now special as it’s one of only a few IMAX cinemas in the world to be able to show both IMAX Laser Digital projections – in full height 1.43 aspect ratio, while also having the option to show IMAX 70mm film prints , making it, in a technical sense at least, one of the best cinemas in the world for picture quality. Sadly, with all the restrictions this great feature has been curtailed by the increase in restrictions due to you know what, focusing the cinemas to shut its door again. Let’s hope that once the vaccine is more widely deployed, cinemas around the world will have a chance to reopen and the industry to recover. For all its technical wizardry, as its part of the Science Museum its primary remit it to show science-based and educational films so it was fitting that for … [Read more...] about Behind The Curtain At The London Science Museum IMAX

How Hard Should We Push Generative AI ChatGPT Into Spewing Hate Speech, Asks AI Ethics And AI Law

February 5, 2023 by www.forbes.com

Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Everyone has their breaking point. I suppose you could also say that everything has its breaking point. We know that humans for example can sometimes snap and utter remarks that they don’t necessarily mean to say. Likewise, you can at times get a device or machine to essentially snap, such as pushing your car too hard and it starts to falter or fly apart. Thus, the notion is that people or “everyone” likely has a breaking point, and similarly we can assert that objects and things, in general, also tend to have a breaking point. There could be quite sensible and vital reasons to ascertain where the breaking point exists. For example, you’ve undoubtedly seen those videos showcasing a car being put through its paces to identify what breaking points it has. Scientists and testers will ram a car into a brick wall to see how well the bumper and the structure of the vehicle can withstand the adverse action. Other tests … [Read more...] about How Hard Should We Push Generative AI ChatGPT Into Spewing Hate Speech, Asks AI Ethics And AI Law
