Maya Sree operating a drone Maya Sree, who goes by only one name, left her hometown in 2018, when she decided to live her life as a transwoman. Her parents did not accept her the way she was, or the jobs that she had taken up earlier to support herself. “But when my parents came to know that I was working for Dhaksha in Anna University campus, I received a call from my family, and they spoke to me, and told me that they were very proud of me. Personally, it’s not just a job for me but a new life,” Maya Sree, a Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA)-certified drone pilot of the Chennai-based Dhaksha Unmanned Systems (DUMS) told Moneycontrol. Parliamentary panel terms drone ‘misuse’ a significant threat, asks MHA to create anti-drone tech
Representative image. While claiming that “drone technology poses a significant threat to governments…”, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs urged the Ministry of Home Affairs to create a pool of anti-drone technology and let all States and Union Territories access it. The committee also sought and received information from several States, including West Bengal and Punjab, regarding the steps taken to deal with drone attacks. These recommendations and inquiries are part of the committee's 237th report on Police — Training, Modernisation and Reforms, released in February 2022. They come at a time when the Indian government has been trying to give the sector a boost through its Drone Rules – 2021, and the more recent PLI Scheme for Drones . Hotline mailbag: The impact of SB-1401, the NIL donor hierarchy, Schulz’s future, Edwards’ fate, Kelly’s recruiting and more
The Hotline mailbag is published each Friday. Send questions to [email protected] or hit me on Twitter: @WilnerHotline. Due to volume — and in some cases, the need for research — not all questions will be answered the week of submission. Thanks for your understanding. Some questions have been edited for clarity and brevity. If California Senate Bill 1401 is passed into law, what will be the impact on Pac-12 schools? Will it impact all Power Five schools? — @TerryTerry79 Impossible to know, but we can take our best guess … If forced by law to pay athletes for services rendered , Stanford, Cal and possibly UCLA will give serious thought to removing themselves from the major college football scene. Influential voices on each campus are already opposed to the current state of play — or should we say, pay-for-play. Diverting revenue to football and basketball, and away from the Olympic sports, would prompt an existential crisis on each campus … and … [Read more...] about Hotline mailbag: The impact of SB-1401, the NIL donor hierarchy, Schulz’s future, Edwards’ fate, Kelly’s recruiting and more

OpenSea is on a new quest to ban copymints, armed with AI, Twitter threads, and Discord chats
When a $70 million NFT sold at Christie’s last spring—a time before Bored Apes, Cool Cats, and Lazy Lions roamed the earth—some scoffed at the fortune spent on computer pixels that could be copy-pasted to your screen for free. But the lot wasn’t just a jpeg, it was the jpeg—and the money went to claim the original work, or the one we would call “authentic.” Take away that distinction, and yes, the file is worthless. advertisement advertisement It’s a high-stakes game that’s rife with fraud, abuse, and theft, and not even the biggest players are immune. But OpenSea, the planet’s largest NFT marketplace, might have a few tricks up its sleeve. This morning, it’s rolling out two products to safeguard the authenticity of collections on its platform. The first streamlines the verification of creator accounts, and the second banishes copymints, or spoofs of existing NFTs, using image recognition. Verified badges are among OpenSea’s so-called … [Read more...] about OpenSea is on a new quest to ban copymints, armed with AI, Twitter threads, and Discord chats

I don’t know anything about Scott Morrison , but anyone who gives it their all on the field is an okay guy in my book. You think he should have taken it easy just because they were little kids? That’s a terrible mindset. That’s how you raise a generation of snowflakes. Survey: America’s Uninsured Rate Is Down To 10% – And Falling
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin New data has raised a tantalizing possibility: That for the first time, America's uninsured rate will fall below 10%. (If it hasn't already; the most recently reported data was collected three months ago.) The findings come from the Urban Institute's Health Reform Monitoring Survey , a quarterly survey of non-elderly Americans. And as of March 2015, the Urban Institute's survey found that 10.0% of nonelderly adults were uninsured, down from 17.8% in September 2013, before the Affordable Care Act's insurance exchanges first launched. No major survey has ever found that the uninsured rate in America has hit single digits. However, the uninsured rate is already down to 7.5% in states that have expanded Medicaid under Obamacare, Urban researchers concluded. Of course, Urban's data is just one snapshot of the uninsured in America. Different surveys use different questions and methodologies. Some are thought … [Read more...] about Survey: America’s Uninsured Rate Is Down To 10% – And Falling

A lone bear, black magic and a $235 billion stock market crash
What does it take to trigger a crash in the stock market? A once-in-a-century pandemic? The biggest war in Europe in 70 years? The US Federal Reserve instantaneously cutting off the supply of the opium of record liquidity and low interest rates? Multi-year high inflation? How about black magic? The Oxford Dictionary defines black magic as a type of magic that is believed to use the power of the devil in order to do evil. In a world where boring financial data, profit and loss statements, and complex macroeconomic events sway the everyday movement of stock prices and stock indices, one Rajkot-based stockbroker claimed last week that he spent more than Rs 8 crore to engineer a multi-day crash in the stock market with the help of esoteric black magic. Close “We are responsible to a great extent for today’s fall and the fall of the past few days in the market. You won’t believe it, but we have spent over Rs 8.5 crore today in kala jadu (black magic) to create … [Read more...] about A lone bear, black magic and a $235 billion stock market crash
Ukraine village flooded intentionally to prevent Russian attack
A water pump station is seen at a flooded area after Ukrainian military forces opened a dam to flood an residencial area in order to stop advance of Russian forces. The intentional flooding of a small village north of Kyiv that created a quagmire and submerged cellars and fields, but prevented a Russian attack on the capital, was worth all the sacrifice, residents said. Ukrainian forces opened a dam early in the war in Demydiv, causing the Irpin River to flood the village and thousands of acres around. The move has since been credited with stopping Russian soldiers and tanks from breaking through Ukraine's lines. "Of course, it was good," said a man who lives in the village, but would not reveal his name. "What would have happened if they (Russian forces) …. were able to cross the little river and then went onto Kyiv?" More than a third of some fields have been flooded, said another man, who also did not reveal his name. Close Some two months later, people … [Read more...] about Ukraine village flooded intentionally to prevent Russian attack
