NEW YORK — In the middle of West 69th Street between Central Park West and Columbus Avenue, behind some scaffolding and a green wooden wall, stand a few precarious inches of facade. It is a Potemkin-like sop to local landmark laws, all that remains of two brownstones from an earlier Gilded Age that were leveled unceremoniously last summer. A few years from now, this remnant will be grafted onto a mansion that may well cost $100 million by the time it’s finally finished. But for now, all they’re doing is digging. Every morning at 8 o’clock sharp, the jackhammering begins. All day long, the drilling and banging and beeping go on. Only on weekends and the holidays of the politically potent — Christmas and Rosh Hashana, for example, but not Martin Luther King Jr. Day — does it cease. It was supposed to end last December, then in February, then this month. Now, they say, it could last all summer. Earth 100 million years from now
If humans cause the sixth mass extinction on Earth–something that may already be underway–how long will it take life on the planet to recover? CO2 stays in the atmosphere for thousands of years, but a new study suggests that it will take much, much longer than that for biodiversity to recover. “We think that we’re approaching a mass extinction driven by us from habitat loss and from a multitude of factors, including climate change,” says Andrew Fraass, a paleobiologist from the University of Bristol and one of the authors of a study published in Nature Ecology and Evolution. “This work, and the work it’s based on, basically suggests that it’s going to take on the scale of millions of years for the biosphere to recover.” The researchers studied the fossil record after the last mass extinction, when an asteroid crashed into the Yucatan Peninsula, causing a tsunami, spewing vaporized debris into the atmosphere, heating up the … [Read more...] about After humans trigger mass extinction on Earth, it may take 10 million years for life to recover
Dave Mosher, provided by Published 3:13 pm CST, Monday, February 11, 2019 Elon Musk/SpaceX via Twitter SpaceX is designing a new rocket ship, called Starship, to send about 100 people to Mars at a time. Elon Musk, the rocket company's founder, said on Twitter that Starship could be 10 times cheaper than the least-expensive rocket today. Musk added he is "confident" Starship may be cheap enough for most people to "sell their home on Earth & move to Mars if they want." Elon Musk is trying to make it a no-brainer for you to move to Mars. Musk, the founder of SpaceX, shared his thinking on cost-effective space travel on Twitter over the weekend. "I’m confident moving to Mars ... will one day cost less than $500k & maybe even below $100k," Musk tweeted on Sunday, "low enough that most people in advanced economies could sell their home on Earth & move to Mars if they want." He added that if anyone decides they don't like Mars (there are plenty of reasons … [Read more...] about Elon Musk says he is ‘confident’ people could afford to ‘sell their home on Earth’ and move to Mars on a SpaceX rocket
ALLAHABAD, India - The largest religious gathering anywhere on earth gets under way Tuesday, with tens of millions of Hindu pilgrims congregating in India to bathe in sacred rivers for the Kumbh Mela. Organizers are expecting the enormous spiritual festival in Allahabad to attract more than 100 million devotees over the next 48 days, with seas of pilgrims camped by the riverside. The ancient city in northern Uttar Pradesh state rises alongside the banks of the Ganges, Yamuna and mythical Saraswati rivers. The confluence of the three -- known as Sangam -- is considered especially holy and Hindus believe bathing there during the Kumbh helps cleanse sins and brings salvation. "This pilgrimage gives me peace of mind and an opportunity to reflect on my life," said Sangeeta Gangotri, a pilgrim who traveled 650 kilometers (403 miles) from Nagpur in western Maharashtra state to Allahabad. The riverbank has transformed into a riot of noise and color. Naked, dread-locked holy men … [Read more...] about Millions in India gather for world’s largest religious event
