In an increasingly warming world, we can’t rely on trees as a climate change cure-all
When people talk about ways to slow climate change, they often mention trees , and for good reason. Forests take up a large amount of the planet-warming carbon dioxide that people put into the atmosphere when they burn fossil fuels. But will trees keep up that pace as global temperatures rise? With companies increasingly investing in forests as offsets , saying it cancels out their continuing greenhouse gas emissions, that’s a multibillion-dollar question. advertisement advertisement The results of two studies published in the journals Science and Ecology Letters on May 12, 2022— one focused on growth , the other on death —raise new questions about how much the world can rely on forests to store increasing amounts of carbon in a warming future. Ecologist William Anderegg , who was involved in both studies, explains why. What does the new research tell us about trees and their ability to store carbon? Earth Stands ‘50:50’ Chance Of Passing 1.5 Degrees Warming Within 5 Years
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Global average temperatures now have a roughly fifty-fifty chance of temporarily rising above 1.5 degrees Celsius beyond pre-industrial levels within five years, according to a new report from the World Meteorological Organization. The 1.5 degree figure represents an important threshold, as it is nominally the preferred warming limit set by the 2015 Paris Agreement—a limit that nations hope will be sufficient to avoid the worst impacts of climate change. According to the Global Annual to Decadal Climate Update released by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the period 2017-2021 saw only a 10% chance of 1.5 degrees being exceeded. But for 2022, that likelihood now stands at 48%. “This study shows—with a high level of scientific skill—that we are getting measurably closer to temporarily reaching the lower target of the Paris Agreement on Climate Change,” said Petteri Taalas, WMO Secretary-General. “Our … [Read more...] about Earth Stands ‘50:50’ Chance Of Passing 1.5 Degrees Warming Within 5 Years
Shareholder capitalism to stakeholder capitalism: Are Indian family firms prepared?
The governance scores of family firms in the ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) rating, as per Reuters and Sustainalytics data, were found to be lower than those of other firms. (Photo by Akil Mazumder/Pexels) SOUGATA RAY, NUPUR PAVAN BANG & NAVNEET BHATNAGAR The debate whether companies should be governed with the sole objective of maximising shareholder value (shareholder capitalism as reflected in the shareholder primacy model advocated by Prof. Milton Friedman) or balancing the interests of multiple stakeholders (stakeholder capitalism as reflected in stakeholder primacy model advocated by Prof. R. Edward Freeman), including shareholders, has been raging for several decades. Climate disasters, rapidly rising inequalities and COVID-19 have perhaps put to rest the shareholder vs. stakeholder primacy debate and tilted the balance firmly in favour of the latter. Modern corporations, irrespective of ownership, have an obligation to act in the interests of … [Read more...] about Shareholder capitalism to stakeholder capitalism: Are Indian family firms prepared?

Direk John ‘Sweet’ Lapus says goodbye to being a gay comedian
John Lapus My star as a gay comedian has already faded,” declared actor John “Sweet” Lapus, who added that he has learned to embrace being a film and TV director the moment he made this realization about his showbiz career. “I’ve learned to accept it.
