What is 1ESG? The starting point of evaluating any investment, whether it is in the early-stage start-up space where I invest, or the hedge-fund space where I used to invest, is the environment in which the company operates, the regulatory regime. If you start with the wrong regulatory regime, none of the other elements, the E (environmental), S (social), and G (governance) are operative. The starting point matters. That’s why I am proposing a 1ESG framework, in which the “1” refers to the overall regime, the host country’s form of government. Companies operating in countries that choose to defy ESG principles by definition lack transparency and accountability. They can’t get past step one. … [Read more...] about ‘ESG’ isn’t just about feel-good investing. It can be a framework for global accountability

H&M is one of fashion’s biggest polluters. Now its foundation is on a $100 million quest to save the planet
In the late ’90s and early 2000s, fast fashion became the industry norm. H&M’s business model was copied by other retailers, from Zara to Walmart to Gap. Selling a large volume of clothes at low prices has proved to be a lucrative business model, but it has had a devastating impact on the planet. With bars closed and people staying home, retail sales of alcohol spiked: Americans were drinking 14% more than in pre-pandemic times, according to a JAMA study. At the same time, there have been increased concerns about whether people are drinking responsibly, given alcohol abuse can be linked to mental health struggles and the incidence of domestic violence—both of which have been exacerbated amid the pandemic. (Many victims of abuse and domestic violence were isolated from their usual support system and particularly vulnerable under lockdown; just weeks into the pandemic, the National Domestic Violence Hotline saw an increase in callers.) … [Read more...] about Alcohol played a ‘difficult role’ in her life.
