What to Do With All That Inventory You Can’t Sell
Last week, I wrote about how to avoid ending up with inventory you cannot sell . But let's say that's exactly what you have: A garage stacked with boxes of product you thought consumers needed, but have had trouble getting off your hands. In my experience, this is not uncommon. For more than 15 years now, I've been hearing a version of the story below. You have this great idea for a new product you believe everyone wants. So you file a patent application, which, after it issues and all is said and done, ends up costing you about $15,000. You work with a manufacturer overseas to produce the minimum amount required for an order, which runs you between $20,000 and $50,000. You pay a professional to help you set up your website and begin selling on Amazon, which you perceive to be a low-cost course of action. All in all, by the time you're in business, you've made a major financial investment. But without the marketing to back it up, the reality is, finding your … [Read more...] about What to Do With All That Inventory You Can’t Sell

How to Get a Higher Royalty Rate For Your Invention
Have an idea for a new product? Early on, spend some time determining what your strategy for bringing it to market will be. Is venturing required, or can you license it instead Personally, after venturing uniquely shaped guitar picks geared towards fans and licensing many of my ideas , I'd choose the latter every time. That's because running a small business, even an ultimately successful one, stressed me out. Who wants to worry about cash flow? I much preferred the freedom to keep creating that licensing affords. Primarily because you can get to market faster, licensing to a large company is also one of the best ways of protecting yourself. These are among the many benefits of licensing . If this is the route you choose, it's understandable, then, that you might be asking yourself how to get the highest royalty rate possible. Royalty rates differ across industries. Knowing what's typical can be extremely helpful when negotiating, so get familiar with the … [Read more...] about How to Get a Higher Royalty Rate For Your Invention
How to Do ‘Pull-Through’ Marketing Like a Pro
Bringing a product to market demands inventiveness. That seems obvious enough, right? Not just the conception of a new idea, though -- the entire process. Because whether you choose to try to license your idea or venture it on your own, you'll have to keep thinking creatively to make it happen. You'll need to strategize . That's just the nature of entrepreneurship. Inventors underestimate this. They want to focus on the fun part. They look for magic bullets where there are none. It doesn't have to be that way! Yes, there's a lot to learn, that's for sure. But if you commit to being open-minded, to relentlessness, to asking questions, well... I can almost guarantee you'll be surprised how far you get. I've brought most of my ideas to market by licensing them, which is both speedier and far less risky than venturing. The step inventors struggle with the most when it comes to licensing their ideas is getting in touch with the right person at the right company at the right time . … [Read more...] about How to Do ‘Pull-Through’ Marketing Like a Pro
18 Reasons You Should Consider Licensing Your Product Ideas
When I took an art class on a lark in college, I discovered how much I loved being creative. Bringing my ideas to life didn't feel like work -- far from it. The experience was downright magical. If I could do this for a living, I'd never work a day in my life, I realized. After I left, began selling my own product designs, and spent several highly informative years at the red-hot toy startup Worlds of Wonder , I developed a simple process to help me achieve my goal. I would supply companies with new product ideas. In exchange, they would do all of the heavy lifting of getting them on the shelf and pay me royalties based on units sold. I'm talking, of course, about licensing . You can think of licensing like renting. The companies I would approach already brought products to market. I had the creative ideas they needed. For me, it was the perfect partnership. After I left WOW and did some freelancing work, I began licensing my ideas and didn't stop for decades. How could … [Read more...] about 18 Reasons You Should Consider Licensing Your Product Ideas
