Covid-19 cases in Thailand 10 times higher than reported: Top virologist
BANGKOK (The Nation/Asia News Network): The actual number of Covid-19 infections must be 10 times higher than reported by the Public Health Ministry as most patients develop mild symptoms, top virologist Yong Poovorawan (pic) said on Sunday (June 26). Thailand recorded 2,378 Covid-19 cases and 17 deaths on Sunday, according to the ministry. Dr Yong also pointed out that the number of children infected by Covid-19 has surged now that schools have reopened, triggering a spread among families. With children, he said, it was difficult to tell if they have the common flu or Covid-19. "We expect Covid-19 to spread quickly from this month and the number of infections to reach their peak between July and September," he said. He reckoned that Covid-19 infections will start dropping between October and December, before rising again in January, when respiratory diseases usually peak. In Photos: Spacecraft Snaps Jaw-Dropping New Images Of Mercury’s Craters From Only 125 Miles Away
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin A spacecraft has sent back beautiful new close-up images of the planet Mercury from just 125 miles/200 kilometers away. BepiColumbo—a joint mission by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)—flew past the closest planet to the Sun for the second time on June 23, 2022. As it did its three cameras were able to capture black-and-white images showing craters on the planet surface. However, the spacecraft closest approach was over the night-side of Mercury. During its close flyby BepiColumbo flew from the night-side to the day-side of the tiny planet, witnessing a sunrise over the planet’s crater-pocked surface. The timing was crucial for the quality of photography it was able to capture because that division between light and dark—the terminator—threw huge shadows across the dramatic terrain. BepiColumbo will orbit Mercury from late 2025 to help planetary scientists figure … [Read more...] about In Photos: Spacecraft Snaps Jaw-Dropping New Images Of Mercury’s Craters From Only 125 Miles Away

Beijing allows primary and secondary schools to reopen after two months
BEIJING (The Straits Times/Asia News Network): Beijing relaxed a major Covid-19 restriction on Monday (June 27) after two months, even as its party chief vowed to normalise the capital city's pandemic controls and stick to China's zero-Covid policy. Primary and secondary schools started allowing students back, as infections subsided in the capital. They had been attending classes online since May 1, when the city battled its worst outbreak since the early days of the pandemic. There were almost 100 cases daily at that time, as the authorities swiftly locked down communities or sent close contacts to centralised quarantine. Restaurants were also banned from offering dine-in service. By Sunday, Beijing reported just four cases. Parents told The Straits Times that they were relieved to have their children back in school. "I've been quite distracted at work because I take my daughter along to the office, and she constantly needs my attention," said human resource manager Duan … [Read more...] about Beijing allows primary and secondary schools to reopen after two months

Look Out! New Data Shows There Are 10 Times More Asteroids Than We Thought Say Scientists
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin There are ten times more asteroids than astronomers thought according to new data from a space telescope. The findings come from a huge data release earlier this month from the European Space Agency’s Gaia space telescope, which was launched in 2013 and since then has been gradually creating an ever more detailed 3D map of our Milky Way galaxy. The so-called “DR3” dataset includes more than 150,000 objects in the solar system objects, most of them asteroids—though also some moons. “Based on Gaia DR3, Finnish researchers will change the conception of asteroids in our solar system,” said Karri Muinonen, Academy Professor at the University of Helsinki, Finland, which was involved in the new data release. It’s thought that the new data will enormously help astronomers in calculating accurate orbits for asteroids. That’s because Gaia data adds-in the physical properties of asteroids. Rather than just seeing them as a … [Read more...] about Look Out! New Data Shows There Are 10 Times More Asteroids Than We Thought Say Scientists
