Representative image. Jet Airways is in the process of finalising a new deal for its fleet and is expected to sign the deal in the next couple of weeks, multiple sources aware of the matter told Moneycontrol . “The timeline for delivery of planes is being finalised as the airline is very keen to start increasing its operations once it takes flight. Once the timelines are finalised, the deal will be signed and announced,” a senior company official said. He added that at the moment Jet Airways has not made a final decision on the type of aircraft it wants to procure and the contract is mostly going to depend on the manufacturer’s ability to deliver planes in a timely manner. “Jet Airways wants to start taking delivery of new planes by the end of 2023 or even before that and will look to take delivery of around 20 planes every year for the next four years,” an industry insider aware of the discussions said. On June 27, Bloomberg reported that the once-defunct Indian … [Read more...] about Jet Airways likely to sign deal for new planes in next couple of weeks: Sources

Aerospace & Defense Companies View Their Business Through Ukraine-Colored Lenses
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin A report released Tuesday by Deloitte confirms that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is causing additional stress on an already weakened global aerospace supply chain, limiting the industry’s ability to meet demand. It has likewise forced western aerospace and defense firms to ask hard questions about the suppliers they rely on and the places they source materials and components from. Supply chain disruption, critical minerals sourcing and resilience have been topics of discussion among A&D companies for years, observes John Coykendall, Deloitte’s U.S. and global aerospace & defense leader. But the invasion, the report he co-authored concludes, has exposed an industry that may be too dependent on particular countries or regions. “You see it more broadly than just aerospace and defense,” Coykendall says. “Looking at the energy markets, countries realize they may be dependent on sources that aren’t as reliable as … [Read more...] about Aerospace & Defense Companies View Their Business Through Ukraine-Colored Lenses

Airbus close to winning $5.5 billion order from Jet Airways
Airbus SE has emerged as the front-runner to win an order for as many as 50 aircraft worth up to $5.5 billion from Jet Airways India Ltd., people familiar with the matter said, solidifying the European planemaker’s hold in the world’s fastest-growing aviation market. The talks are for A320neo jets and A220 planes, the people said, asking not to be identified because the deliberations are private. Boeing Co. and Embraer SA are also in discussions and no final decision has been taken, the people said. Although at sticker prices any transaction would be north of $5 billion, discounts are common in such large purchases. While delivery slots are scarce, airlines can lease jets from lessors who buy in bulk. Representatives for Boeing and Airbus didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment. The potential order comes as Jet Airways, once India’s top private airline, is preparing to return to the skies. Korean T-50 Jets Could Enhance Iraq’s Air Campaign Against ISIS
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin One of Iraq's two-dozen South Korean-built T-50IQ Golden Eagle trainer/light combat aircraft took off for the first time on June 22 . Pressing these jets into service and eventually combat could significantly enhance Baghdad's ongoing air campaign against Islamic State (ISIS) militants that still threaten the country's security. Iraq signed a contract for these jets back in December 2013 and began taking delivery of them in 2017. However, they were never used, reportedly because of a funding problem. That could soon change. Iraqi Air Force (IQAF) Block 52 F-16 Vipers carry out the majority of airstrikes against ISIS targets in rural parts of the country's north and west. They are partially augmented by the country's modest fleet of 12 second-hand Czech L-159s (consisting of 10 single-seat L-159As and two two-seater L-159Bs) light combat aircraft and a dozen Russian-built Su-25 Frogfoot attack planes. … [Read more...] about Korean T-50 Jets Could Enhance Iraq’s Air Campaign Against ISIS

‘Lunch-flation’ bites for office workers
SEOUL: Office worker Park Mi-won has never bought her lunch from a convenience store, until her favourite lunch buffet recently raised prices by more than 10% to 9,000 won (US$7 or RM30.77) as South Korean inflation soars to a 14-year high. “After the price rise, I went to convenience stores instead, where I thought the prices were reasonable while food also tasted good,” the 62-year-old said. “So now I go there two to three times a week.” Global food prices surged 23% last month from a year before, according to an agricultural arm of the United Nations. The war in Ukraine has impacted supplies of grains from there and Russia, and caused energy and fertiliser prices to soar. Offering cheap instant noodles, sandwiches and gimbap (rice rolls) for under US$5 (RM21,98), convenience stores are gaining in popularity as salaried workers like Park seek ways to cut costs. South Korean convenience shop chain GS25 posted more than 30% increases in sales of instant meals in January to May … [Read more...] about ‘Lunch-flation’ bites for office workers
Cayetano urges House to pass 10K Ayuda Bill
MANILA, Philippines — Taguig-Pateros Rep. Alan Peter Cayetano on Wednesday urged the House of Representatives to convene into a Committee of the Whole or initiate a special session to discuss the 10K Ayuda Bill that aims to provide financial assistance for Filipino families amid the COVID-19 pandemic. House Bill No. 8597 seeks to provide each Filipino family with a one-time P10,000 assistance or P1,500 per family member, whichever is higher, which they can use for their daily needs or to start their own businesses as they await the full roll-out of COVID-19 vaccines. A press statement from the former Speaker read that the bill, which he and his allies filed on February 1, “has not been discussed up to now” and “has been languishing at the Committee on Social Services headed by Quezon City 5th District Rep. Alfred Vargas.” “Sana makiramdam ang Congress and we convert into a Committee on the Whole or in any way that we can, kung kailangang humingi ng special session, para ipasa … [Read more...] about Cayetano urges House to pass 10K Ayuda Bill
Controversial law passed
The country’s parliament has passed legislation to create three new provinces in its underdeveloped region of Papua, a move critics fear could undermine the standing of the area’s indigenous population and threaten special autonomy powers. The South-East Asian nation’s easternmost region, currently split between Papua and West Papua, will now be divided into five provinces, with the addition of South Papua, Central Papua and Highland Papua. The government says the decision will help spur development, improve public service delivery and create more opportunities for Papuans to become civil servants in the resource-rich area that remains one of the country’s poorest regions. Tito Karnavian, Indonesia’s Home Affairs Minister, said after the vote yesterday that the primary goal of the legislation was “to accelerate development in Papua to increase the welfare of the people in Papua, especially indigenous Papuans”. But the plan has sparked protests in Papua, which has been seen a … [Read more...] about Controversial law passed
