HO CHI MINH CITY (Vietnam News/Asia News Network): The rapid growth in e-commerce is driving an unprecedented increase in demand for logistics services, including express delivery services, according to industry insiders. In its E-commerce White Book 2021, the Việt Nam E-Commerce and Digital Economy Agency said Vietnam has the highest number of people shopping on e-commerce platforms in the South-East Asia region at some 49.3 million. In the last two years, the country has seen both consumers and firms moving online, it said. Nguyễn Ngọc Dũng, president of the Vietnam E-commerce Association, said there has been a boom in e-commerce since the pandemic began. More than 70 per cent of the population have access to the internet and nearly 50 per cent shop online, he said. The online shopping boom has offered opportunities as well as challenges to the logistics industry, which has to meet the surging demand for order fulfilment and last-mile delivery, he said. Commodity stocks drive FTSE 100 to more than one-week high
- A + A GDANSK/BENGALURU (June 27): UK's FTSE 100 ended at a more than one-week high on Monday, as an easing of Covid restrictions in China and the prospect of global infrastructure funding brought relief to commodity prices, lifting shares of major oil and mining companies. The commodity-heavy FTSE 100 rose 0.7% and hit its highest closing level since June 16, while the domestically focused mid-cap FTSE 250 index advanced 1.0%. Risk sentiment improved as easing Covid curbs in Shanghai and relaxed testing mandates in several Chinese cities supported base metal prices. "The burst of global enthusiasm for equities has put a spring in the step of the FTSE 100 at the start of the week," Hargreaves Lansdown analyst Susannah Streeter said. Oil majors Shell and BP both rose over 1.5%, leading gains on the index. Meanwhile, mining stocks Anglo American, Rio Tinto and Glencore gained between 1.7% and 3% after Group of Seven leaders pledged to raise US$600 … [Read more...] about Commodity stocks drive FTSE 100 to more than one-week high
Fisheries drive growth in cold storage capacity
(The Jakarta Post) PREMIUM Jakarta ● Tue, June 28 2022 The number of cold storage installations for the fishery sector is set to rise rapidly this year on increasing online orders for cool delivery and improving seafood production, but industry players need to anticipate rising installation costs. Cold Storage Association (ARPI) chairman Hasanuddin Yasni expects 32,000 tons of cold storage to be installed this year, up 50 percent from last year’s capacity increase, as the industry expands to accommodate growing production in the marine products and fishery sector. “New players that provide mini-middle cold storage have begun to emerge. This group is expected to provide 200 tons to 600 tons of cold storage,” Hasanuddin told The Jakarta Post on Thursday, adding that 60 percent of cold storage used in the fishery sector was for export purposes while the remaining 40 percent was used as a storage system to supply the domestic seafood processing industry. to Read … [Read more...] about Fisheries drive growth in cold storage capacity
South-East Asia’s food production costs could go up by 80% in sustainability drive, says Study
SINGAPORE, June 26 (The Straits Times/ANN): While reducing carbon emissions will help manage the extreme weather conditions that have led to food price spikes in South-East Asia, this transition to a lower carbon future could come with its own costs, one think-tank said. Global forecasting firm Oxford Economics estimated that the costs of producing food could go up by as much as 80 per cent in countries such as Indonesia by 2050, as governments implement measures aimed at achieving net zero. This is if regional authorities do not also introduce initiatives to mitigate the impact to the food supply chain, said Oxford Economics Asian macro consulting head Tom Rogers, during a webinar on Thursday (June 23). The webinar, hosted by Oxford Economics, discussed findings from a study into the impact of climate change on food prices. The study, commissioned by industry body Food Industry Asia and conducted by Oxford Economics, found that heatwaves in Thailand in December 2014 and in … [Read more...] about South-East Asia’s food production costs could go up by 80% in sustainability drive, says Study
LongTail Rally 2.0: More Cars, More Adventures, More Chills And Thrills
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Just over 13 months after the inaugural LongTail Rally of 2021, rally organizers kicked off the second LongTail Rally amidst the stunning skyline of San Francisco. Gathering at the Fairmont Hotel on Mason Street for the opening dinner, and culminating at the Hyatt Regency, Gainey Ranch in Scottsdale, Arizona one week later, this year’s rally involved more participants, covered more miles and included even more adventures. Rally organizers Michael Knapp and Julie Milne didn’t need to up their game after the celebrated reaction to the first LongTail Rally, but they kicked things up a notch nonetheless. Where last year’s rally included a trip to BMW’s driving school in Thermal, California, and a visit to Speed Vegas outside Sin City, this year’s drive crossed far more state lines and included off-road safaris, high-altitude tests of man and machine, plus a massive 110-degree pool party and a marriage proposal. Day 1: … [Read more...] about LongTail Rally 2.0: More Cars, More Adventures, More Chills And Thrills
LongTail Rally: 30 Supercars, 2,000 Miles, 8 Days Of Thrill, Infinite Chill
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Spending 8 days and 2,000 miles driving non-stop is either your worst nightmare or your personal state of nirvana (we’re talking “release of the soul from karmic bondage” nirvana here). Achieving that state of mind on the open highway may be putting a bit too much pressure on the road trip concept, but that didn’t stop the LongTail Rally organizers from trying. With a route that started in Laguna Beach, ended in Las Vegas, and visited Palm Springs, Beverly Hills, Santa Barbara, Monterey, Yosemite and Death Valley in between, I feared a triathlon-like experience after glancing at the LongTail Rally itinerary. But rally organizer Mike Knapp quickly allayed those fears. “We rarely hit the road before 11 am, and we’re always at our next night’s accommodations by 5 pm.” If you’re a car rally noob (like me), you may not know this, but most exotic car rallies are not run this way. Instead of reveling in engaging roads … [Read more...] about LongTail Rally: 30 Supercars, 2,000 Miles, 8 Days Of Thrill, Infinite Chill
Bruised bitcoin due relief after crypto wipeout, charts show
- A + A (June 27): The wipeout in Bitcoin may have run its course, a range of technical indicators suggest. Momentum measures and insights from options bets signal ebbing selling pressure and a possible trading range of US$20,000 to US$25,000 — though the usual caveats apply about the mercurial nature of cryptocurrencies. The largest digital token has slumped about 70% from a November record and was little changed at US$21,343 as of 8:38 a.m. Monday in London. It slid below US$18,000 earlier this month, before retaking the closely watched US$20,000 level. Tightening monetary policy, withering speculative ardor and collapsing digital-asset projects have spurred a broad crypto rout in 2022. But the mood in global markets is turning less dour on tentative hopes that the price pressures driving interest-rate hikes may be cresting. The lessons of Bitcoin’s past swoons suggest it’s in the vicinity of its bear-market low, according to Glassnode. This “bear market is now … [Read more...] about Bruised bitcoin due relief after crypto wipeout, charts show
Roe v. Wade Is No More. What Businesses Need to Know About Covering Abortions
The United States Supreme Court on Friday eliminated the constitutional right to obtain an abortion , casting aside nearly 50 years of precedent that began with the Roe v. Wade case. The highly-charged case, decided by the court's conservative majority, is sure to spill over into the workplace. Business owners who don't already know where they stand on the issue, are likely going to have to figure one out, especially if they want to help employees with covering the costs of getting legal abortions. The 6-3 decision , which has been anticipated since a draft opinion leaked in May, will lead to near total bans on the procedure in about half of the states across the country. Twenty-two states already impose strict restrictions while 18 states are expected to ban abortion outright, or only allow it in limited circumstances. Thirteen states, including Texas, Mississippi, and Oklahoma, already have trigger laws in place that took effect automatically, while others are written to … [Read more...] about Roe v. What CPAs Should Think About During This Crypto Winter
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin As cryptoassets enter a new crypto winter, the temptation is to relegate cryptoassets (and blockchain) to the backburner, and that would be a disservice to the accounting profession as well as the investors seeking to allocate capital to this fast growing asset class. While cryptoassets have moved far beyond simply discussing bitcoin price volatility, Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) would be forgiven for remaining focused on the implications of said volatility. Given the dramatic drawdowns in prices across the crypto sector, the implosion of several prominent crypto banking protocols and increasingly negative sentiment, allocating even more time to crypto might seem like an odd choice. That said, even during the current crypto winter, the pace and prevalence of crypto adoption continues to accelerate almost unimpeded. With the number of individuals using cryptoassets numbering in the hundreds of millions, with a billion … [Read more...] about What CPAs Should Think About During This Crypto Winter
