In 2012, I founded Hipower, a nonprofit community network for female executives. Each Hipower member spends 12 months in a series of workshops with coaches, brand experts, organizational development consultants, and storytellers to answer the question “What do you want to be known for?” advertisement advertisement In that first year, we selected 10 women. The program was intense, and we got to know each other acutely over the year. We started as a group of strangers and ended with such a strong feeling of trust, togetherness, and commitment that has lasted through the seven years since. As the program became more popular, we increased the size of our cohort to 15 and then 18 participants. The year we hit 18, we crossed some line that changed the group dynamic in ways I hadn’t expected. Personal attention suffered. Camaraderie wasn’t as intense. Members seemed more hesitant to push themselves and think big. Hipower programs are now capped at a maximum … [Read more...] about This is the precise number of people to put on a team to maximize productivity

Radhika NallayamWells Fargo, the world’s fourth largest bank, embarked on a massive data transformation journey last year. The goal was to drive efficiency in business processes, improve customer experience and meet the changing regulatory requirements. When Starbucks starts serving cold drinks with a sippy-cup-like lid instead of plastic straws–a lid that it currently only uses with its “Nitro” cold brew drinks–it may be even less likely that the lids can be recycled than it is today. advertisement advertisement For Starbucks, the change came in response to growing pressure to ditch plastic straws, which can end up as waste in the ocean and eventually turn into microplastic in the food chain. Lightweight straws can’t make it through recycling equipment. But the new lids, which the company plans to phase in by 2020, may not be much of an improvement. “We can’t solve the plastic pollution crisis by substituting one kind of unnecessary single-use plastic with another,” says John Hocevar, the ocean campaigns director for Greenpeace. First, there’s the problem that few lids may make it into recycling bins, since someone drinking iced tea or coffee on the street may only have … [Read more...] about Why Starbucks’s plastic straw ban might not help the environment
It’s a fascinating time to be a car designer. With the impending rise of self-driving vehicles, new technology for better visibility on the road, and more, there’s never been a better time to rethink the experience of driving. In advance of the New York International Auto Show this weekend, Co.Design caught up with Gerry McGovern, the design director and chief creative officer for Jaguar Land Rover. At a Manhattan showroom, he was debuting the 2016 Range Rover SV Autobiography, the company’s latest limited-edition luxury vehicle. Here’s what he had to say about tomorrow’s car design, including how Land Rover approaches technological innovation (cautiously), why the company isn’t worried about autonomous cars, and why backseats are about to get a lot cooler. advertisement advertisement The Backseat Will Get More Love The home office of the future may be the backseat of a self-driving car. But even before cars can drive themselves while you … [Read more...] about Jaguar Land Rover’s Design Chief On The Future Of Cars
A man walks into a pizza shop with an assault rifle, fires it, and points it at an employee. This isn’t the start of a joke. It’s what happened in Washington, D.C., in early December. A scruffy young conspiracy theorist had come to Comet Ping Pong Pizza brandishing and firing a gun in search of a purported child sex trafficking ring tied to prominent liberal politicians supposedly run out of one of its backrooms. advertisement advertisement It’s not clear who gave birth to “pizzagate,” which cropped up shortly after WikiLeaks released John Podesta’s hacked emails. But much of the theory’s fleshing out happened on the social news aggregation site Reddit through a group of pseudonymous Donald Trump supporters on one of the many subreddits where conspiracy theories and far worse things sometimes flourish. When CEO Steve Huffman eventually banned r/pizzagate from the site in an effort to prevent online … [Read more...] about Will Reddit Ever Grow Up?
