Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin While summer travel is in full swing, getting to your destination is proving to be a more complicated affair. The airline industry has been saddled with a host of issues, from delays to cancellations, while trying to meet the sharp boom in demand. So while you might crave an escape to a far-flung destination, why not wait until things have settled and consider a place more convenient (meaning: plenty of direct flights from major cities) but no less captivating? This is when Madrid enters the picture. Spain, too, recently lifted its negative Covid testing requirements for those traveling from a foreign country on June 12, and the capital city feels as inviting as ever with something for everyone from hungry epicureans to museum buffs. But though the culturally-rich metropolis has never been short on appeal, the luxury hotel scene surprisingly has aired on the lacklaster side. So when Four Seasons Hotel Madrid was … [Read more...] about Worth The Wait: What Makes Four Seasons Hotel Madrid A Smart Destination For Summer Travel

Crude oil sell-off a bit overdone as prices could be ticking back up soon, says Vandana Hari of Vanda Insights
Brent crude futures slipped 3 cents to $113.09 a barrel by 0515 GMT, after rising as much as 1 percent earlier. Front-month prices tumbled 7.3 percent last week, their first weekly fall in five (Representative image) After shooting to near $123 per barrel last week amid various global factors, crude oil prices slid by as much as 6 percent or $11 to $112 per barrel on June 17. This was a sudden reversal from the steep climb in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, global travel opening up, and services reviving. Speaking to CNBC-TV18 on June 20, Vandana Hari, founder and CEO of Vanda Insights, said the correction was mainly due to two factors — Libya’s oil production being confirmed at 700,000 barrels per day (bpd) instead of the earlier expected 100,000 bpd; and tumble in United States markets due to sell-off in broader risk assets. “What happened on Friday (June 17) was quite late in the US session and quite a surprise,” Hari said. Why a bumper cherry crop in Kashmir is bringing cheer to apple orchard owners
According to an official in J&K's horticulture department, cherries are being cultivated on around 2,800 hectares in the region, which yields an annual turnover of Rs 130-150 crore. (Photo by Irfan Amin Malik) Apple is considered a cash crop in Kashmir but the bumper cherry harvest this year has caused fruit growers to think beyond apples. Apple growers in Kashmir are ecstatic to see bumper cherry crop in their apple orchards, at a time when apple harvesting is still four months away. Sayar Ahmad, a fruit grower from south Kashmir’s Shopian, said that cherry production this year was 50 times more than previous year. “Apples no doubt fetch us around Rs 10-15 lakh of yearly income but cherry provides mid-year income to the growers,” said 30-year-old Ahmad. In Kashmir, apple growers plant cherry, apricot and plum trees in their orchards to produce multiple fruit varieties. Ahmad added that earlier fruit growers would take cherries home and never thought of exporting the … [Read more...] about Why a bumper cherry crop in Kashmir is bringing cheer to apple orchard owners
This Actress Fulfilled Her Dream To Bring Classical Free Theater To New Yorkers In A Historic Setting
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin “When I dare to be powerful, to use my strength in the service of my vision, then it becomes less and less important whether I am afraid,” wrote Audre Lorde. Actress Billie Andersson had that vision. One night when she was walking near the Brooklyn Bridge along the East River Esplanade down to The Battery she noticed the majestic circular sandstone fort, Castle Clinton in Battery Park. “I had never seen it before,” says Andersson of the open air national monument that was initially created to prevent a British invasion in 1812. “And I immediately thought it would be perfect for performing Shakespeare, like Romeo and Juliet .” That accidental encounter set in motion Andersson’s quest to bring classical theater to the space. “I had to find out who had stewardship of Castle Clinton, which is the National Park Service,” she shares. Because Castle Clinton is a national monument there are many restrictions about … [Read more...] about This Actress Fulfilled Her Dream To Bring Classical Free Theater To New Yorkers In A Historic Setting
Japan braces for power crunch as heat rises with end of rains
Passersby are seen through a heat haze during hot weather at Sugamo district in Tokyo, Japan June 27, 2022. - A + A TOKYO (June 27): Japan scrambled on Monday to avert a looming power crunch as temperatures climbed nationwide, with authorities warning of higher than expected demand after the rainy season ended in the capital, Tokyo, at its earliest since record-keeping began. Less than two weeks ahead of an election for the upper house of parliament, surging electrical prices are making life tougher for Japanese customers, following higher fuel costs brought by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. A power shortage could batter the fortunes of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), already under fire for its handling of higher consumer prices. "Electricity demand has been staying above yesterday's forecast since this morning, amid unseasonably intense heat," an official of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry told a news conference, adding that demand had … [Read more...] about Japan braces for power crunch as heat rises with end of rains
Amid startup layoffs, larger job market remains buoyant across sectors
The larger job market in India remains buoyant across sectors – even amid layoffs by a clutch of startups in recent months – and employees will generally continue to call the shots through FY23. “We see FY23 to remain an employees’ market with some amount of adjustments. Employees still have the bargaining power, opportunities and enjoy the benefit of demand,” said RP Yadav, chairman of Genius Consultants, a staffing and human resource company. While information technology and IT-enabled services will continue recruiting, e-commerce, logistics and export-oriented sectors including textiles and leather goods are doing well in terms of hiring. The consumer goods sector will increasingly do well, as will the retail and hospitality segment, according to staffing firms, HR experts and talent managers. The near-normal level of economic activity in retail and hospitality is indicative of a revival in these sectors after a prolonged phase of weakness due to the pandemic and offers a … [Read more...] about Amid startup layoffs, larger job market remains buoyant across sectors
Kenanga Research expects CPO prices to stay firm in 2022 and 2023
- A + A KUALA LUMPUR (June 24): Kenanga Research expects crude palm oil (CPO) prices to stay firm, averaging at RM4,500 per tonne in 2022 and RM4,000 per tonne in 2023. In a note on Friday (June 24), the research house said the outlook is mainly based on supply needs, resilient demand for the golden commodity and supportive biofuel demand. “Current global edible oil tightness began when production dipped and failed to meet demand in 2020. Inventory slipped and continued doing so in 2021. “If the pending second-half season goes well, 2022's inventory should edge up year-on-year but unlikely to exceed 2019 levels,” it said. It also said that a favourable 2023 scenario is possible given that prices are still good but helpful weather is also needed, and Malaysia’s labour shortage does not curtail palm oil output substantially. Meanwhile, the research house said that demand for CPO continues to be resilient, underpinned by rising populations and affluence where … [Read more...] about Kenanga Research expects CPO prices to stay firm in 2022 and 2023

New Home Sales Unexpectedly Rise But Housing Market Still ‘Cratering’—Here’s When Experts Predict Prices Will Fall
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline New home sales unexpectedly broke a four-month streak of losses and climbed more than economists projected in May, according to data released Friday, but experts note the reprieve may not last long, citing rising mortgage interest rates that are likely to continue curbing demand—likely pulling down record prices as soon as the end of this year. Key Facts About 696,000 new single-family houses were sold last month on a seasonally adjusted annual basis, climbing 10.7% above the April rate of 629,000 (which was revised up from 591,000) and far surpassing average analyst projections of 587,000, the Census Department reported on Friday. “Don’t be deceived,” Pantheon Macro chief economist Ian Shepherdson said in emailed comments after the report, saying the bounce doesn’t change market outlook given an “astonishing collapse ” in mortgage applications this year as rapidly climbing mortgage rates—now at the … [Read more...] about New Home Sales Unexpectedly Rise But Housing Market Still ‘Cratering’—Here’s When Experts Predict Prices Will Fall
Why Biden’s Federal Gas Tax Holiday Would Be Bad For America
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Is too much inflation crushing your summer vacation plans? President Joe Biden has a holiday for you — at the gas pump. Biden is set to request from Congress a three-month, emergency relaxation of the federal tax on gasoline. By removing that tax of 18.4 cents per gallon, and right before the July 4th peak of driving season, Biden hopes to be credited for saving you three or four bucks every time you fill up. It’s not a huge savings. The federal gas tax hasn’t changed since 1993 and is not indexed for inflation. Still, according to the Congressional Budget Office, it brings in $45 billion a year, which covers nearly all the $47 billion last year in federal highway spending. As Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm said on CNN, “Part of the challenge with the gas tax, of course, is that it funds the roads.” Ultimately, Congress will have to find another pocket to dig in to replace the $10 billion or so in highway funding. The … [Read more...] about Why Biden’s Federal Gas Tax Holiday Would Be Bad For America
