Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Ukrainian army brigades have begun shooting their new American howitzers at Russian invaders. And not just any brigades. Ukrainian commanders and their American allies have taken pains to get the 155-millimeter M777 howitzers into the hands of the units that need the guns the most: the ones blunting the Russian offensive west of Izium, in eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region, as well as the ones maneuvering into a position to cut across the Russian advance. An operation that could prove decisive. The United States has donated to Ukraine 90 of the M777 howitzers plus 180,000 shells. Canada and Australia also have given Ukraine additional handfuls of the big guns plus ammo. American and allied advisors have spent the last few weeks training hundreds of Ukrainian gunners to use their new howitzers. The first photos and videos of Ukraine’s M777s in combat began circulating this weekend. An eight-person M777 crew … [Read more...] about Which Ukrainian Troops Are Getting American Howitzers? New York (CNN Business) The stock market selloff has left the Dow Jones Industrial Average on track for its longest weekly losing streak in nearly a century. After opening the day higher, the Dow ( INDU ) turned negative and was down about 270 points, or 0.9%, in recent trading. The Dow is off by nearly 4% so far this week. If the Dow finishes down for the week, which it is solidly on pace to do, it would be its eighth-straight weekly loss. That would be the longest weekly losing streak since 1923, according to FactSet data reviewed by LPL Financial. The long stretch of losses underscores the negative mood on Wall Street as investors grow nervous about high inflation -- and what the Federal Reserve will have to do to get prices under control. The broader S&P 500 is on pace for a seventh-straight weekly loss, which would be its longest such slump since March 2001, according to Bespoke Investment Group. The S&P 500 entered … [Read more...] about Dow is on pace for longest weekly losing streak since 1923
You probably already know that in terms of available venture capital , one city leads all the rest, and it's not even close. San Francisco , predictably, has the largest VC ecosystem of any metropolitan area in America, according to a report released this week from VC funding data firm Pitchbook. What perhaps is surprising, given the progress and growth of other startup ecosystems, is the size of the gap: San Francisco startups have raised $117.6 billion since 2006--around three times as much as those in New York ($43.6 billion) and Silicon Valley's own San Jose ($35.5 billion). That's not to say things are trending in the right direction for the city. San Francisco was home to an increasing number of VC deals each year from 2010 to 2014. That number dropped from around 1,900 deals in 2014 to 1,700 last year--and only 656 in the first six months of 2016. Also noteworthy is the trend in San Francisco's notoriously high rent rates. From July 2015 through July of … [Read more...] about San Francisco Secures More VC Funding Than Any Other U.S. City, and It Isn’t Even Close
