Former Trump Organization chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg - A + A NEW YORK (Aug 18): A long-time senior executive at former US president Donald Trump's family business pleaded guilty on Thursday to conspiring with the company in a 15-year tax fraud. Allen Weisselberg, the former chief financial officer at the Trump Organization, entered his plea in a New York state court in Manhattan before Justice Juan Merchan. Weisselberg, 75, may be required to testify against the Trump Organization, which is also a defendant, at a criminal trial scheduled for October. He is not expected to cooperate with Manhattan prosecutors in their larger probe into Trump himself, a person familiar with the matter said. Trump has not been charged or accused of wrongdoing. Despite Weisselberg's refusal to cooperate, his plea will likely strengthen prosecutors' case against Trump's company, which has pleaded not guilty. It Could’ve Been Me: Sympathy For Trump University Students
Thank goodness he never attended Trump University, but my dad did once drag me to a “timeshare” pitch. The mailer we received promised, “No strings attached.” We had won some sort of prize. Just sit through their spiel, we were told, and walk away with either a car or a boat. Upon leaving, we were handed an inflatable boat in a cardboard box. In fairness, I got a lot more than a boat; I got a lesson in gullibility. And it’s a lesson that has served me well. I don’t buy anything unsolicited. I’ve never once sent money to a Nigerian Prince who e-mailed me. Even with family, I trust but verify; if my mom tells me she loves me, I still check it out. Dad also sold Amway. Actually, though, I’m not sure he ever actually sold any Amway. Now, as far as I know, they’re a reputable company. I don’t think we ever actually lost any money. Let’s just say we never ran out of Glister toothpaste . Speaking of which, the man who recruited dad into the business used to always say, “I grew up … [Read more...] about It Could’ve Been Me: Sympathy For Trump University Students
How a Disney Map Helped My Company Survive the Death of the Direct-to-Consumer Model
Every week, the same headline repeats: DTC upstart heads to retail. You can now find Magic Spoon at Target, Glossier at Sephora, and Away at Amazon, and the list goes on. This month, Yumi, the company I co-founded, also threw our proverbial hat into the brick-and-mortar ring, with a full nationwide launch at Target and nearly 2,000 stores. So, yes, the "era of DTC" as we know it is dead . But I would argue that the DTC era was an important pit stop to the inevitable omnichannel future. In the initial version of our company pitch deck, we created a future road map inspired by Walt Disney's famous Synergy Map in 1957, when he envisioned Disney's 60-year road map in a napkin sketch. He doesn't explicitly name Disney+, its big gambit in connected TV, or the purchase of Pixar, but all the breadcrumbs are there for the sprawling online and offline empire we know today. Our Disney map slide showed Yumi's later-stage selling channels would include real-life festivals for … [Read more...] about How a Disney Map Helped My Company Survive the Death of the Direct-to-Consumer Model

Going Back to School with Stock Market Fundamentals
Make that four weeks in a row of gains for the U.S. stock market, as the rally has become undeniable. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq both climbed more than 3% last week, with the the Dow up 2.9%. The S&P 500 has now climbed 15% from its lows in mid-June, while the Nasdaq has clawed back 20% since then. That could technically be described as a new bull market for the index. A 20% retracement from a recent low fits the bill—or the bull—but there are a lot of opinions about that. But we can't deny the strength of the rally, especially when we dig into the charts. The average stock in the Nasdaq Composite index is up 34% from its lows. Remember, just a few months ago, we were talking about the average Nasdaq stock being down 50% from its highs. The pendulum has swung back in a big way. Across the market, the breadth thrust has been pretty impressive. And no, that's not a swimming stroke. The breath trust indicator is a technical indicator used to ascertain market momentum … [Read more...] about Going Back to School with Stock Market Fundamentals

What to Expect for the Markets in February
The January effect was in full effect for the first month of 2019. After a punishing December, stocks rebounded in the first few weeks of January as signs of progress in the U.S.-China trade war appeared, the Federal Reserve adopted a more dovish tone on interest rates, and earnings season revealed that some companies and sectors have more-positive outlooks than expected. It was a month to remember: The S&P 500, up 7.8%, had its best January performance since 1987, and its biggest monthly gain since October 2015. The DJIA rose 7.17% in January, its largest one-month rise since 2015 and biggest January gain in 30 years. Crude oil prices had their best month on record, surging more than 19% after three straight months of losses. Output cuts and the chaos in Venezuela, had a lot to do with that performance. The U.S. added 304,000 jobs in January, blowing out expectations despite the shutdown. While stocks have rebounded, notably for U.S. companies and indexes, risks … [Read more...] about What to Expect for the Markets in February

A study published this week in the data science journal Patterns suggests some digital health companies may be funneling sensitive patient data to Facebook to help target advertisements. Forbes senior writer Alexandra Levine reports that while the scale of the study was small – it tracked the online activity of 10 participants active in online cancer communities – it points to bigger issues around data-sharing trends in digital health and who is ultimately responsible for patient privacy, with three of the five companies analyzed going against their own privacy policies by sharing this information. Andrea Downing, cofounder of the Light Collective, a research group focused on online privacy issues that conducted the study, said this data gathering and algorithms for advertising are “one of the biggest threats to … [Read more...] about InnovationRx: Facebook Ads And Patient Data; Plus, Covid And Neurological Damage
