Hardwired from within If you had any expectations concerning what the inside of Vice’s head office looks like, the reality probably wouldn’t confound them. Young, stylish media worker bees moving amid communal desks and modern glassed-in meeting rooms, surrounded by post-industrial brick, wood and steel beams. Oh, and there’s that room with the stuffed bear. The company first moved into a section of this converted foundry in 2003 and has since taken over 35,000 square feet, some parts so recently that Japanese tourists still show up looking for vintage clothes at Beacon’s Closet. That space is now full of more desks housing editors, production staff, advertising sales, you name it. Near one of the kitchens there’s a leather couched communal space next to a hundred-year-old (fully stocked) bar the company brought up from Philly. … [Read more...] about Take A Look Inside The Headquarters Of Vice

Unforeseen boredom is what led Piecework Puzzles cofounder Rachel Hochhauser to dive headfirst into the world of jigsaw, when she found herself with a closet full of old puzzles and without reception while on a trip to Yosemite a few years ago. A few months later, when she and cofounder Jena Wolfe left on a getaway, Wolfe says she was surprised when Hochhauser whipped out a puzzle for fun. “We just started talking about how there were no puzzles that spoke to our aesthetic,” said Hochhauser. “No puzzles we’d want to gift to someone or show up for a weekend with or put on our coffee table for display because it takes weeks to finish.” … [Read more...] about Designer puzzles became a surprise hit during the pandemic. A randomized controlled trial of the new program, called the New Leaf Project, found this to be the case. The 50 people in the study who were given cash—$7,500 in Canadian dollars, or roughly $5,800 U.S.—got into stable housing faster than the control group. Their food security increased immediately. And at the end of one year, they still had savings left. The program cost less per person, the study found, than the government would have spent caring for the people, while helping participants get farther ahead. … [Read more...] about Giving people money turns out to be an incredibly effective tool in ending homelessness
