This 3-Fund Portfolio Pays $5,000 Every Month
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Thanks to the selloff, it’s possible to buy closed-end funds (CEFs) at such high yields that we can do what seemed unthinkable just a few months ago: build a CEF portfolio that will pay $5,000 a month in dividends on about $540k invested. That’s an 11.1% average yield! This, of course, is because many CEFs have been caught up in the selloff, and yields move inversely to prices. So a fund that may have yielded, say, 7% six months ago (which is about the long-term CEF average) is suddenly yielding a lot more now. In addition, it’s possible to build an income stream this big with just three CEFs. The three funds we’ll examine below also come together to form a well-diversified portfolio, with stocks and bonds from hundreds of companies. The beauty of CEFs is that you can buy them through any brokerage account, just like stocks, during normal market hours. Their dividends will then reliably drop into your … [Read more...] about This 3-Fund Portfolio Pays $5,000 Every Month
Denver’s InnovAge was struggling long before Medicare stopped paying
A company tasked with caring for some of Colorado’s sickest people failed to consistently provide basic services like insulin injections for more than a year before state and federal authorities intervened, as its profit-driven leaders recruited more clients than they could handle, former employees allege. The Denver Post spoke to seven former employees and board members of InnovAge, a Denver-based elder care provider, and reviewed hundreds of pages of lawsuits, federal inspection reports and whistleblower complaints. All painted a picture of an organization so focused on growth that it continued signing up new people — including some homeless Denver residents who didn’t qualify — while struggling to serve clients it already had. The Colorado Department of Health Care Policy and Financing announced in December that it would no longer pay for InnovAge to care for new clients covered by Medicaid in the Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly, or PACE, which offers services … [Read more...] about Denver’s InnovAge was struggling long before Medicare stopped paying
Shares Of Russia’s Largest Public Company Gazprom Tank 30%
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline Shares of majority state-owned Russian oil and gas giant Gazprom, which is the country’s largest public company, tanked in trading on Thursday after the company declined to pay out dividends for the first time since 1998 in a sign of the widening impact of sanctions on the Russian economy. Key Facts Gazprom shareholders voted not to pay dividends because under the “current situation it is not advisable to pay dividends based on the 2021 results," the company’s deputy chief executive Famil Sadygov said, according to Reuters, in a nod to worsening economic conditions in Russia as it is cut off from much of the global economy in response to its invasion of Ukraine. That decision is a reversal of the board’s recommendation last month to issue a dividend of 52.53 rubles (96 cents) per share. Shares of Gazprom fell 29.8% to 208.9 rubles ($3.82) on Thursday, and the Moscow stock exchange briefly … [Read more...] about Shares Of Russia’s Largest Public Company Gazprom Tank 30%
Investing in Wine With the NBA’s Elite Players
It's reality check time and we are opening the holiday-shortened trading week in a bear market in the S&P 500 after U.S. stocks had their worst week last week since March of 2020. The Federal Reserve hiked the federal funds rate by three quarters of a percent last week as it tries to cool inflation. I know, I said that would be "out of character" and "off script" on last week's podcast . So, you know the situation is pretty serious, and the Federal Reserve does not have inflation under control. No central bank does, for that matter. It's going to take aggressive interest rate hikes to get to what the Fed calls a normal rate environment (3.4%), which means we may very well see another 75 basis point hike at the Fed's next meeting in July. While that 3.4% may be normal, if you look at the last 50 years, it is not normal when you look at the past decade, which has been characterized by accommodative monetary policy via low interest rates and low inflation well under 2%. This is new … [Read more...] about Investing in Wine With the NBA’s Elite Players
Private Equity Bonanza Moves ‘Down Market’ Amid Bear Market Jitters
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin As sinking stocks and recession fears spur interest in alternatives, fund managers and retail marketplaces are chomping at the bit for ‘mass affluent’ investors. After years of private equity firms aggressively marketing themselves to high-net-worth investors and their financial advisors, the message seems to be breaking through. Facing a bear market and bleak economic outlook, marked by inflation, supply chain imbalances and a hawkish Federal Reserve, more RIAs and high-net-worth investors are warming up to alternative investment funds – such as private equity, hedge funds, venture capital and private debt strategies – in their search for yield, according to advisors and investment managers who spoke with Forbes . “I think [retail] appetite is increasing,” says Donald Calcagni, Chief Investment Officer at Mercer Advisors, which oversees roughly $42 billion of client assets. “There is a sense among investors, … [Read more...] about Private Equity Bonanza Moves ‘Down Market’ Amid Bear Market Jitters

What the Business Cycle is Telling us About a Recession
If you're looking for capitulation in 2022, it's in the bond market. And that tells you that investors' confidence in the global economy is very low. Inside the stock market, it's all about defense. Defensive stocks, which include big healthcare companies and dividend-paying value stocks, have been driving the gains. An index of global defensive stocks put together by Goldman Sachs, which is heavy in healthcare giants, has climbed to more than an 18-month high relative to the MSCI AC World Index. Inside the U.S., the defensive ETF ticker DEF has been outperforming the Spider ETF SPY all last week and all year. For market watchers, this feels a whole lot like a recession trade. While investors in the capital markets are battening the hatches for a recession, money in the private markets is also drying up. The value of venture capital deals in the U.S. dropped more than 25% in the second quarter to just $1 trillion, according to Dealogic . M&A activity in the United States … [Read more...] about What the Business Cycle is Telling us About a Recession
