Student Loans Romney (R-UT) and four Republican senators introduced the Student Loan Accountability Act, which would: prohibit the Biden administration from enacting wide-scale student loan cancellation to forgive all, or some, student loans for borrowers; and include exemptions for existing targeted federal student loan forgiveness, student loan cancellation or student loan repayment programs such as public service loan forgiveness and teacher loan forgiveness. “It makes no sense for the Biden Administration to cancel nearly $2 trillion in student loan debt,” Romney said. “This decision would not only be unfair to those who already repaid their loans or decided to pursue alternative education paths, but it would be wildly inflationary at … [Read more...] about Mitt Romney Proposes Bill To Stop Biden From Canceling Student Loans

Book Review: Dana Brown’s Entertaining and Insightful Memoir of Vanity Fair, ‘Dilettante.’
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Upon return from a family vacation three summers ago, economist Ike Brannon remarked at a subsequent lunch about an individual at the resort who was almost literally covered in tattoos. This was an expensive resort, and Brannon wondered how he and his family were sharing the same pool. To be clear, Brannon’s wonderment about the inked up vacationer wasn’t of the nose-upturned variety; rather he wanted to know what profession afforded so much individuality and disposable income. It turns out his poolmate was a chef. To younger readers, the mention of chef likely elicits a “so what?” response. For those born in the 1970s or earlier, the response is different. We remember . We remember when chef was a “dead end” job for, yes, people with tattoos. They were referred to as cooks then. It’s a long or short way of saying that the economic thinker in Brannon was celebrating a happy truth about prosperity: it elevates all manner of … [Read more...] about Book Review: Dana Brown’s Entertaining and Insightful Memoir of Vanity Fair, ‘Dilettante.’
Questions on 5G rollout
THE global body representing mobile network operators (MNOs) does not seem convinced that Malaysia’s single wholesale network (SWN) model for 5G would work. This is despite the recent “compromise” reached between the government and the MNOs, which allows MNOs to become shareholders of Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB), the state-owned entity to deploy 5G infrastructure nationwide. Contrary to what the government has promised, GSM Association (GSMA) – representing MNOs’ interests worldwide – argues that SWNs have not delivered “better and cheaper” services in other countries such as in the rollout of 4G. The big question is, if the model did not work for other countries, why is it expected to be successful in Malaysia? What would be Malaysia’s “secret formula” that other countries have overlooked? DNB has repeatedly said that the SWN model removes infrastructure duplication, ensures faster rollout across Malaysia to even less profitable locations and offers cheaper 5G access to … [Read more...] about Questions on 5G rollout
Ensuring the success of 5G
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is in a good position to become an international role model as it commences the nationwide rollout of its fifth generation (5G) network, says a United Nations official. Brett Haan, an adviser on 5G strategy and policy, said the pandemic had accelerated 5G investment growth globally. “Many countries around the world are looking at how to address the digital divide that Covid has so bitterly revealed and how to ensure that 5G can be properly harnessed. “So I see this as an opportunity for Malaysia to be a role model for the rest of the world,” he said yesterday during an online forum by The Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (Ideas) entitled The future of 5G: benefits and challenges in deployment. Ideas chief executive officer Tricia Yeoh said the nationwide 5G rollout will benefit the local telecommunications industry. “The implementation of 5G can augur well for industry growth, which in turn would generate positive economic outcomes for … [Read more...] about Ensuring the success of 5G
Soi Dog Foundation responds to rabies and dog registration stories
PHOTO: Bangkok Thailand Soi Dog Phuket’s Soi Dog Foundation has sent The Thaiger a response to an article published on October 16. The story was sourced from our Bangkok partners ‘The Nation’ and, according to Soi Dog, contains some glaring inaccuracies. You can read the original article HERE . We reprint the response from the Soi Dog Foundation below… “The Department of Livestock Development (DLD) carries out a survey, twice a year, in an attempt to count the number of dogs and cats in the country, both owned and stray. In 2016, it counted 7.3 million dogs and 3 million cats in Thailand, excluding Bangkok. This year the number of dogs was recorded by the DLD as 7,770,969, excluding Bangkok. We at the Soi Dog Foundation carried out a census of free roaming dogs in Greater Bangkok two years ago and came up with a figure of 640,000, so a realistic number for dogs nationwide is somewhere around 8.4 million, not – as your story states – 820,000. Another figure given in … [Read more...] about Soi Dog Foundation responds to rabies and dog registration stories
Why You Should Make Resolutions Even When You Know You’ll Fail
There are two truths to New Year's resolutions : Many people make them, and many people break them. Research suggests that nearly one in four Americans make resolutions, but in general, those resolutions don't stick. Studies show that as the days tick by in January and February, visits to the gym drop and visits to fast-food restaurants rise. January 1 inspires so much attention and encouragement--new year, new you! But before long, the energy we feel around the novelty of a new habit wears off. New year, same you. I've been studying happiness and good habits for years, and in my observation, many people have abandoned their New Year's resolutions by February 28--a day we could call Discouragement Day, though I've seen harsher terms such as Quitter's Day or Fall Off the Wagon Day used to describe the day of stopping. Consider the person who resolved to go for a daily run before breakfast. On January 1, and for a few weeks, this habit seemed new and rewarding. … [Read more...] about Why You Should Make Resolutions Even When You Know You’ll Fail
