Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline Former President Donald Trump asked a state court Monday to throw out all evidence from a grand jury investigation in Georgia over the 2020 election and block investigators from continuing their probe, a last-minute effort to thwart the investigation into whether Trump illegally tried to overturn the election as the ex-president faces potentially imminent criminal charges. Key Facts The court filing asks the Georgia state court to block prosecutors from using “any evidence or testimony” from the grand jury investigation, as well as throw out the grand jury’s final report. It also asks the court to block the Fulton County district attorney’s office, which has been investigating the post-election period and could bring charges, from having “any further involvement in this matter.” Trump claimed the grand jury’s work should be thrown out because the statutes that govern special grand juries in … [Read more...] about Trump Tries To Block Georgia Election Investigation As Criminal Charges Loom

House GOP Demands Manhattan DA Testify Over Trump Criminal Probe: ‘Unprecedented Abuse Of Prosecutorial Authority’
Share to Twitter Share to Linkedin Topline Top House Republicans sent a letter to Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg on Monday demanding he testify about his investigation into former President Donald Trump’s role in an apparent hush money payment made to a porn star in the final days of the 2016 campaign, which the GOP paints as a politically motivated probe relying on an untested legal theory ahead of his potential indictment. Key Facts The letter called the investigation an “unprecedented abuse of prosecutorial authority,” claiming the DA’s office has spent years looking for an excuse to charge Trump and has now settled on a “novel legal theory untested anywhere in the country.” Trump predicted over the weekend he will be indicted Tuesday for allegedly orchestrating a $130,000 payment to porn star Stormy Daniels to keep her from publicly disclosing an alleged affair between the two—Bragg could claim the payment was an illegal political … [Read more...] about House GOP Demands Manhattan DA Testify Over Trump Criminal Probe: ‘Unprecedented Abuse Of Prosecutorial Authority’

MSNBC Guest Says Trump Should Not Be Arrested, Raises Question Of Fairness
Former U.S. attorney Chuck Rosenberg said Monday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” that former President Donald Trump should not be arrested and warned that, if he were, the fairness of the legal system could come into question. Trump announced Saturday he expects to be arrested by the Manhattan District Attorney’s office on Tuesday. The potential indictment relates to a years-long investigation into whether Trump paid hush money to former porn actress Stormy Daniels. In Oct. 2016, Trump’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen , sent $130,000 to Daniels so that she would not disclose her alleged affair with Trump, according to reporting from The Wall Street Journal . Cohen claims that the then-candidate reimbursed him for the payments, and authorities are still investigating whether Trump forged business records to hide the alleged payout. Trump indictment would be unprecedented moment in U.S. history
The decision whether to indict former President Donald Trump over hush-money payments made on his behalf during his 2016 presidential campaign lies in the hands of a Manhattan grand jury that has been hearing evidence in secret for weeks. An indictment of Trump, who is seeking the White House again in 2024, would be an unprecedented moment in American history, the first criminal case against a former U.S. president. Law enforcement officials are bracing for protests and the possibility of violence after Trump called on his supporters to protest ahead of a possible indictment. An indictment could also test a Republican Party already divided over whether to support Trump next year, in part due to his efforts to undermine his 2020 election loss. Trump denies any wrongdoing and has slammed the Manhattan district attorney’s office probe as politically motivated. Here’s a look at the hush-money probe, grand jury process and possible ramifications for his presidential campaign: … [Read more...] about Trump indictment would be unprecedented moment in U.S. history
After Collecting Millions From Wall Street, Janet Yellen Now Helps Decide Which Banks Get Bailouts
After raking in over $7 million in speaking fees from financial institutions in the two years before being confirmed, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen now plays a major role in determining which banks are systemically important, according to her testimony at a Senate Finance Committee hearing Thursday. Yellen had received more than $7 million in speaking fees from dozens of companies including Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Citi, Credit Suisse, UBS, Charles Schwab and many more, according to Yellen’s public financial disclosure report. Though the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation insures deposits up to $250,000, Yellen told the senators the government may insure additional deposits, as it did at the recently failed Silicon Valley Bank (SVB) and Signature Bank, if that bank’s failure would present a “systemic risk” to the economy. Biden issues first veto, taking on new Republican House
By ZEKE MILLER and SEUNG MIN KIM (Associated Press) WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden issued the first veto of his presidency Monday in an early sign of shifting White House relations with the new Congress since Republicans took control of the House in January — a move that serves as a prelude to bigger battles with GOP lawmakers on government spending and the nation’s debt limit. Biden sought to kill a Republican-authored measure that would ban the government from considering environmental impacts or potential lawsuits when making investment decisions for people’s retirement plans. In a video released by the White House, Biden said he vetoed the measure because it “put at risk the retirement savings of individuals across the country.” His first veto represents a more confrontational approach at the midway of Biden’s term in office, as he faces a GOP-controlled House that is eager to undo parts of his policy legacy and investigate his administration and his family. … [Read more...] about Biden issues first veto, taking on new Republican House
Faithless Electors In Texas Vote For Ron Paul, John Kasich
Two faithless electors in Texas cast votes Monday for former Texas Rep. Ron Paul and Ohio Gov. John Kasich instead of Donald Trump, but didn’t do enough to keep Trump from becoming president-elect of the United States. The two dissenting votes, the only faithless electors against Trump in the whole country, were announced just before 5:30 pm Eastern time by Candace Noble, the chairwoman of Texas’s Electoral College assembly. Noble announced that of Texas’s 38 electoral votes, 36 had gone to Trump while one each had gone to Paul and Kasich. She then announced that Texas’s votes had made Trump the president-elect, setting off cheers in the Texas state capitol building. The two faithless electors mean that Trump finished with a total of 304 electoral votes, instead of his election night tally of 306. Trump lost fewer voters than his opponent former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who lost four electoral votes due to faithless electors in Washington. For the vice presidential … [Read more...] about Faithless Electors In Texas Vote For Ron Paul, John Kasich
